  1. I think this has been covered before but 2,5mm difference is really nothing, like: | | I doubt you will notice any difference, especially if you compensated for the 2,5mm on your seat hight. I would think that a bike fit would be hard pressed to recommend 172,5mm above 175mm cranks. There are so many variables in measuring body angles, etc. that such a small difference will not make any diffenece. But that's just my 2,5c worth
  2. Well done Louis! And what a great ambassador for South Africa.
  3. Did with my daughter on a loaned old Tandem (was it a Zini?) when she was in matric. It was exam time & fortunately all went well as SHMBO would have been quite pizzed if it interrupted the exam. Was best road ride/race ever. Subsequent one I did was quite boring, so maybe next year try getting a spannetjie together to ride for the Freedom Challenge Scholarship Fund or something like that. Put a HRM on her just so I could check up & to make sure that she wasn't just ringing the bell & enjoying herself too much This year a mate of mine did it on the same tandem with his son. Tandems rock
  4. From today's race report http://glennharrisonsa.blogspot.com/2013/06/daily-report-28-june.html "After all the drama yesterday, today was a relatively uneventful day in the Gamkaskloof. All of the fifteen riders who slept there last night got up The Ladder without incident and went on to Rouxpos." Thank you Ketoorskop for stating your side here - hope we meet on the trail one day?
  5. I think the concept is good. I may be wrong but it appears to not mount directly onto the towbar ball but into the square tube. Many modern cars (with goose-neck towbars) don't have this arrangement anymore. Also there appears to be no number plate & stop light mounting?
  6. This is an urban legend that won't be killed off... There is no proof that using CO2 affect the sealant.
  7. During the month of January I will use my bike light during every ride I do when on a public road. 1) As a sign of repect and rememberance of Burry 2) To be more visible on the road. Care to join me? Ben de Lange
  8. What a loss: to his wife, family & to cycling in SA. RIP Burry
  9. Mine was also 38/24 (10 speed). Now 38/22 (9 speed) and it works so can't see why 38/26 won't work.
  10. Great event. Great track. Friendly people. The best. Good value for money, so no gripes from about lack of prize money as I normally contribute heavily towards those And the prize giving was nice and quick so 100%. So much more fun doing it in a team, my daughter was the best team mate ever! A completely different event compared to doing it solo. (Respect to those slogging it out on their own!) Great route, great venue. Thanks to all.
  11. Nice post... There is no free lunch in the world of insurance. (or anywhere!) You just spread the risk over time. But YOU still pay, plus some.

    Welcome to the Hub DG
  13. What is that part that is poked? If it is in the hub then there is bound to be another Shimano hub that will use the same part (maybe M756?). If you need a cone or freewheel you could try Linden Cycles, they carry quite a lot of old stock. Good luck & let us know.
  14. The Giant is a great bike. Aluminium 14kg. Great commuter and uses standard 3-piece modern cranks. The Schwinn Corvette is Steel at 17kg and uses old fashioned one-piece crank which takes old fashioned 1/2" pedals so your modern SPDs pedals won't fit onto the crank.
  15. [Johan has a comment about form rather than function? What is the world coming to?] These saddles are great. (I have two) And when you sit on them nobody sees them (who cares?) They are Freedom Challenge favourites. Covered with softish leather which needs some care (Dubbin). Johan is correct, there are other commercial saddles that will also work well. These just work very well... And despite the bulky look (they come with a custom saddle bag that works well) they are not heavy.
  16. Stunning story! Thanks. The way rear epic memories are made. In 2005 I bought "Moutain Biking Trails in SA" by Jacques Marais (great photographer nowadays) and Susan Mills - wonder if it is the same book you are referring to? Anysberg Nature Reserve is now on the Freedom Challenge route. Some hate the area. I think it is stunning. (Makadas Adventures also went through there.) Tell us more such stories...
  17. Because they are using dollar in Zim
  18. You are so right! Both of them great rides! Enjoy.
  19. What lube do you use on the stanchions?
  20. These comparisons so bore me... What are we trying to proove? "The one I did was harder than the one you did?" Who cares? (maybe your mother) I think your last race is always the hardest one. (Because your brain still remembers the pain) They all good events. Just ride the bike. (and I have done both)
  21. Great initiative - well done. How do we get stuff to you?
  22. Be careful of the cheap Clark's pads - the backing plates rust, bad idea. The Clark's Gold look better quality. I have used Shimano metal which lasted very long (more than 2300km)(FC)
  23. Gavin, organizers have done away with the old system & it now first come first served...
  24. True... massively expensive! (But still better value than that other one, methinks!) Opening bid for hubbers & your family: http://www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/retief-rasa-2011
  25. Good luck with your ride! Re: "considerably more expensive than Epic btw" Epic = 9 days FC =< 26 days No comparison?!
