  1. some are worth it and some are not great. As with any bike you got to look at the condition of the parts as to not incur any further cost right after buying it. try not to buy too old as older parts can be hard to source if you need it and newer bikes generally have newer tech. But i would buy used and maybe spend a bit more bucks after buying it to service and make sure everything is good. Hard to give advise on such a general question. Tell us where you are from, your size and weight and general stuff like that. then we can maybe suggest some bikes in your area or close to you to go check out. good luck.
  2. cheapest is getting the semi smart trainer and a cheap wheel with either a trainer tyre or a slick. I would recommend putting a 29er wheel on with a roadbike training tyre as they seem to be cheaper than the mountain bike kind and they work well. This should fit in any frame even if you have an old 26er mtb.
  3. Forgot to mention 1 other shop you can visit or shop online with great service and product value Rapide
  4. Having built a bike from scratch and needing every part on it in the last 2 months, I have the following experience with the online shops and walk in shops: No1 online shop is always Bikehub classifieds. However this provided all the highs and all the lows one can possibly imagine including a scammer or 2 which thankfully the admins sent me warning about and I cut the cord. 2. EvoBikes - no hassle and quick delivery. Prices was OK to good/competitive. 3. CWC - no hassle and quick delivery. Had great discounts on some items I needed. 4. CycleLab - walk in service was great and even source an out of stock item from another branch - pricing was really good on some items (Vittoria tyres and look pedals) but some prices made me leave certain items (saddles are very pricey). Store was Boksburg. 5. Trail Tech Cycles - no hassle and delivery was quick - Prices was good but after the order was placed I never got any feedback or update on shipping until it got to my door. otherwise the online shop is lacking some items and I found it tricky to fill my basket with items I needed to qualify for free shipping. I am yet to try Summit Bikes and some others as I still have a shopping list... the following shops need to check their service levels as I tried purchasing items from them and either got no reply or late replies more than a week later simply stating no stock. Hotspot Cycles Bikemob Bike Addict not sure I would try buying there again.
  5. Seems poor Louis is getting drafted to all the teams needing him for his points not results - not sure they are really interested in developing his ability as he hasn't shown much in years...
  6. Louis Louis Louis... I feel for the guy - he is still struggeling with form/confidence or matching the other riders. Yes we do expect him to rub elbows with the best at the front but right now I don't know if he will be drafted to do some super domestic or just regular team work...
  7. Are you buying wheels or hubs also? Depending what wheel you have (if you just want to convert a current set) you may or may not even get the freehub you want or need. 1. Make sure which freehub is available to your wheels (skip if you are buying whichever hubs or wheels) 2. decide on your brand of preference. 3. ride it. generally shimano is cheaper than SRAM in the same tier/level. That is not entirely true. I would not use a sram shifter with a shimano rear derailleur or the other way around - the indexing may be completely different - so I would confirm this first. same goes for cassette and chain combos. It would be bad advise to mix and match if you don't absolutely have to and could be a costly trial and error session with less than ideal shifting performance etc. If you are buying everything new then just get all the same.
  8. Will they compete and compete for GC on any GT this year???
  9. He is in desperate need of better looking sunnies
  10. they have even grown names - given by my wife... Roadbike - "The b!tc#" - no matter how much money and time you spend she is never happy and laughs at your "try hard" effort Old mtb - "the Nymphomaniac" - same story but she at least seem to enjoy every moment with uncontrollable desire for more - never satisfied fully. New mtb is the same but just costs more...
  11. just now I get visitors...
  12. I would cry a lot... then cry some more - nothing replaces a custom built where every part was selected. I cannot begin to fathom what I would buy... I replaced my mountain bike recently and I still wish I had my old bike where everything was just dialled to your style, liking, comfort. same goes for my road bike
  13. My boy is 2 1/2 plus some now and loves the balance bike when he wants to race daddy around the garden and otherwise still loves his plastic scooter. The scooter has taught him handling skills i didn't even need to like lifting the front wheel at drop offs (kerbs and single steps) also doing donuts and wheelies and sliding the back around corners etc etc - they are great and have their place - I got the balance bike just before he turned 2 and only from about 2 and 3or4 months did he start trying it. Don't rush them too much as it hurts their confidence more doing that than letting them evolve on their own (nothing wrong with giving them the tools though) but I agree with the no training wheels thing. they grow so fast that in a month or 2 she may just be size to start on it. Maybe also put it away for a bit - out of sight out of mind and let her enjoy the plastic scooter.
  14. Re measured my new 2.35 Barzo and Mezcal they now measure 62.5mm on the 29mm ID rims @ 1.55bar front and 1.7bar rear. I did the 3.5bar over night and put the wheels in the lovely sunshine all day yesterday as to get max casing volume. Since I have swopped to a more XC type downcountry bike I wanted max cush from the rubber.
  15. Seriously just replace the cable and housing. Cleaning it is is not going to work very well for very long and then the spay oil stuff like WD40 (although a great product) is going to attract dirt and dust and crap that's going to gum up the cable and make it worse. And probably by this time your inner looks a foxterrier has had a knaw at it so that also would need changed again. ALWAYS change cable inners and outer same time. Its so cheap and is the best thing to keep everything operating awesome.
  16. First mistake - you could have a pinch or funny kink or something in the housing. Replace it. You should have done this as step 1 or 2 when you have issues with any shifting on any brand. replacing just an inner is probably pretty pointless if not done with the outer if you are having shifting issues - crap gets down into the outer and could cause mayor havoc.
  17. The 2.35 Barzo and Mezcal measure 62.5mm on my 29mm ID rims. The volume make sense on lower pressure and then the grip is excellent. Confidence inspiring tyres and good fast rolling - agree the weight is negligible due to the performance and you can just send it.
  18. It is when you go to the 2.35 tyres when things get really interesting and Maxxis are not that much lighter and the I find the grip and puncture protection superior with Vittoria Barzo/Mezcal almost making it the logical choice. (still up to personal preferance) Below are actual scale weights: Maxxis Ikon 29x2.35 - 748g Forecaster 29x2.35 - 734g Ardent 29.2.40 - 774g Vittoria Barzo - 29x2.35 (graphene 2.0) - 740g Mezcal 29x2.35 (Cape Cobra) - 760g I personally like Scwhalbe tyres more but have not fully found the characteristics and weights in their range as the Barzo/Mezcal combo - Also the casing volume on their 2.25 Racing Ralph and Rocket Ron or Racing Ray to be low. Nobby Nic has better casing volume in the same sizing.
  19. But not nonsense as you stated. Actual fact and he fitted the battery himself a few times also. As he had a few he would swop between as he had some spare for backup. I am not arguing that your battery has fallen off or is about to but only reporting the actual events and reports. I personally have ridden every version of XT and Xtr INCL Di2 since 9speed without ever having any mechanicals WHATSOEVER. So from that I can say that I have not had any wear issues or other that others have reported. It does not however invalidate their experiences or reports. And let me tell you having to get the particular buddy to the end of a 80km stage with 28km to go I personally IMO would not buy AXS if I had the money... and to replace batteries endlessly as that is my experiences. You have your opinion I have mine.
  20. Not nonsense but fact - I cannot comment how or who fitted the batteries previously. I just state the fact that I have one friend that just stripped off his AXS in Feb and refitted XX1 mechanical because of losing the battery on the RD and then the service crew I knew that had to go do emergency stock runs go get multiple guys new RD batteries at a stage race so guys could continue riding the next day. You state your facts and I state mine. we call it getting as much information out there so someone else can go make their own decision on what to spend their money on.
  21. Everyone is saying AXS but how many run it on a MTB and truly can give advise on it? XX1 and X01 is good also but I would stay away from axs IMO - I would rather be smiling than the bike shop making a killing selling batteries.
  22. Fluuuusssssh - Ineos going down the Toilet with has beens and boy wonders that clearly are nothing on their own if not pulled to the finish by the best and most intelligent riders. I think ineos will evaporate like their petrol fumes sponsor or spectacularly explode and grenade like the grenadiers they are calling themselves
  23. XTR 12 - 4 years late but sooooo good. I would rather finish a ride than be looking for batteries on the trail that has unclipped and fallen off. And thats from a friend that was doing mechanic at some of the stage races in the last year who left in emergency and drove all night to be back in the morning handing out batteries and burning a few credit cards.
  24. So Tommy D clearly does not have the winning form - so his form in TDF could also not have been that great - thus making his comments about the performance of others maybe a bit unfounded just saying...
  25. keep going back to squirt... but I clean my bikes frequently and relube. every month or so I remove all the gunk and soak chains in benzine - once all is super clean I re- squirt. rinse - cycle - repeat.... nothing feels as smooth other than race day custom chain wax with ptfe or speedwax... but watch for wear with speedwax... thats if you can find it in the first place watch this:
