  4. Barloworld to ride the Tour de France - Wynand de Villiers Source: http://www.cyclingnews.co.za/Pages/Default.asp?More=Barloworld%20to%20ride%20the%20Tour%20de%20France&FeatureID=2415&SectionID=2 Hot on the heels of Robert Hunter?s stunning overall win in the Tour de Picardie stage race in France at the weekend, Barloworld received even better news that they have been included in the Tour de France line-up for this year. It?s great news not just for Hunter and his team, but also for South African cycling with a South African sponsored team for the first time taking part in cycling?s showcase. The final wild card slots will likely be announced today, but the Barloworld squad received the heads up at the weekend that they can start preparing for the Tour. Hunter won the first stage of the four-stage Tour de Picardie and successfully defended the yellow jersey throughout the tour. On the fourth and last 91.5km stage of the three-day tour, which took place on Sunday, the Barloworld pro had his hands full controlling Jartazi cyclist Janek Tombak from Estonia. Tombak won the stage, but fell 3 seconds short of Hunter. Italian Alessandro Proni finished third. Proni attacked Hunter, together with Tombak, on the final hill with 3km to go. It was a valiant effort to gain time through a gap and finishing bonuses, but Tombak just couldn?t get enough bonus seconds back. Barloworld were there in numbers to support Hunter on the final hill and he went on to his sixth win of the season and his second overall in a stage race. epoh2007-05-21 15:01:06

Ons het verkeer om oor te worry hulle het suicide fietsryers om oor te worry Source: http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/05/12/turkey.izmir.ap/index.html ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- A homemade bomb left on a bicycle exploded at a market in the Aegean port city of Izmir on Saturday, injuring 15 people, the governor said. The blast occurred one day before hundreds of thousands of secular Turks were expected to march in the city against the Islamic-rooted government's attempts to raise the profile of Islam in the country. Governor Cahit Kirac appealed for calm. Izmir's mayor, Aziz Kocaoglu, said he did not think there was any connection between the attack and the planned demonstration. The blast occurred at a market in the Bornova district of Izmir in the morning as vendors were setting up their stalls. One of the injured had a serious wound in the ankle, authorities said. The blast shattered the windows of several houses and car windshields. Police were searching for a suspect who allegedly left the bicycle at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing a blue nylon bag on the bicycle, the state-run Anatolia news agency said. There was no indication of who might be behind the attack. Kurdish, leftist and radical Islamic groups have carried out bombings in Turkey in the past. Political tensions are high in the country after secular lawmakers blocked the election of a president from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Islamic-rooted party, out of fear the nation's secularism would be undermined. Erdogan's government declared early general elections in July. Parliament on Thursday amended the constitution to allow the Turkish people -- rather than legislators -- to elect the president. However, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer could veto the measure or call for a referendum on it. Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, whose bid for the presidency was blocked in the standoff over religion in politics, hinted Friday that he might revive his candidacy in any direct election by voters. Doing so would likely trigger further tensions over the presidency. The powerful military, which has ousted four governments since 1960, has strongly warned the government against radical Islamic activities in the country and said it remains the "absolute defender" of the secular system. 9. Running for the Cyclist By: Michele Ferrari Published: 31 Dec 2004 Is running recommended for cyclists as alternative activity? Dr Ferrari says... Bad weather and cold temperatures in wintertime often make it very hard to go out on the bike and perform the daily training. Specific gym sessions or indoor training on stationary bikes therefore have to be part of the usual winter program; some athletes prefer doing some MBK, cross-country ski or swimming as complementary activities. Many cyclists are hesitant and suspicious when it comes to running, commonly deemed responsible for sore legs, joints and tendons problems and said to utilize muscles not relevant to the cycling gesture. Indeed running implies both concentric muscle contractions (fibers working to shorten) in the pushing phase and eccentric muscle contractions (fibers working to stretch) in the landing phase, from the impact with the ground until the beginning of the pushing phase. The eccentric component increases when running downhill, whereas it reduces when running uphill. Cycling instead involves almost exclusively concentric muscular work, with a modest eccentric component when pedaling out of the saddle, especially in sprints and accelerations. Human movement (with the exception of swimming, requiring only concentric contractions) and generally any muscular activity imply both concentric and eccentric work, alternating in the cyclic nature of gesture. The eccentric component is mainly the one that induces the most significant increases in muscle strength: repeating exercises such as leg press or squats are most effective in the ?return phase? of the movement. A cyclist who exclusively relies on pedaling tends to lose strength. I believe running can be useful to cyclists during wintertime, either to maintain a good cardio-respiratory efficiency, or to improve the strength, or to remedy muscular unbalances caused by cycling practice. Obviously one has to start with moderation (15-20 minutes, 3 times a week), preferring soft grounds (e.g. grass) and flat or slightly uphill courses. One could then gradually increase up to 40-60 minutes, 3-4 times per week. Heavier athletes will have to carefully choose the proper courses and be wary of the progression of distances.
  10. I would like to see a bit more on the Valverde camp. They have been very silent since a bit of news broke on cyclingnews.com about his alleged blood containing EPO. epoh2007-05-09 02:17:23

  12. http://www.cyclelab.com/default.asp?id=186309&des=article But alas, due to sanctions and South Africa's policy of Apartheid, it wasn't to be. Ertjies, along with Robbie McIntosh and Alan van Heerden, were left to their own devices in Europe, racing under alias names for fear of being thrown out of Europe. When they did race under their own names, they couldn't afford to get results, because of fear of their identity becoming public. That's the main reason why Van Heerden, who won a stage in the Giro d'Italia, never lined up for Peugeot in the Tour de France.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said Petrus Motloung, 46, died while being transported to Dihlabeng Hospital in Bethlehem from the Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Hospital in Qwaqwa on Wednesday. Motloung was riding his bicycle along the main road in Bohlokong when he bumped into the pedestrian. "Apparently he fell off his bicycle, bumped his head against the ground and became unconscious." An ambulance was summoned and Motloung was rushed to Dihlabeng Hospital. "However he was transferred to the hospital in Qwaqwa for a scan to his head and was on his way back to the Dihlabeng Hospital when he died." Mophiring said it was later found Motloung sustained a skull fracture as a result of the accident.epoh2007-05-04 02:50:25

    Go Ivan!

I hope all goes well for him, I know he is not guilty. He is pure talent and they are scared of him. Source: http://sport.guardian.co.uk/cycling/story/0,,2066190,00.html Basso, 29, was one of more than 50 riders implicated in the doping probe centring on doctor Eufemiano Fuentes. He has protested his innocence and a case against him by the Italian cycling federation last year was shelved. He faces a two-year ban if found guilty. "I'll be there on May 2 to understand what new things I'm facing," added Basso. "My DNA? I've already given my permission to everybody, my team and even to the anti-doping investigators." epoh2007-04-26 15:38:26

  20. Seedings are based on the following criteria : Panorama Tour 2006 Final RankMotivations submittedOther sources and known ability Seedings are provisional and only for Stage 1 Requests for changes to seedings must be made in writing with a motivation to the So what group is the strongest group ? I see there are mixed couples in the A group. If that is the strongest group, what a joke!
  21. I personally don't think Basso is guilty. The evidence they have against him are pretty lame at this point. I also did not think Ullrich was guilty and some people would argue he is still not guilty cuz they only found blood so what ? But Ullrich denied he even knew Fuentes and now they found a positive DNA match from Fuentes's labs...enough for me to loose all the respect I ever had for him and dont want to know anything further about him anymore. In Basso's case I would like to see him give his DNA and them match it with the blood bags. If there is a positive match I will feel the same about Basso as I feel about Ullrich now. The fact that they are pulling out people that are potentially involved in the Puerto scandal is a good thing. I like the no tolerance attitude, it sends out a strong message. But at the end of the day the riders who are implicated but are not guilty suffers the most.
