  1. Easy ride to Wilderness and back this morning (Couldn't see much on the phone screen, but the photo came out ok)
  2. But the kit, tyres and tubes isn't really just for the one event, right? Unless you slash both tyres and tubes and, as a result crash and destroy your new kit. In which case, do NOT play the lottery! Next year's event should actually be cheaper for us, since we'll travel less than half the distance. (Now watch "Murphey" kick me in the ....)

Lonely Mountains Downhill game is on special on Steam this week, for those that might be interrested: https://store.steampowered.com/app/711540/Lonely_Mountains_Downhill/
  4. I see Saris has also released a new model: Saris Announces New Upgraded H4 Smart Trainer Pretty unexciting update, unless you have a 12-speed groupset on your roadbike. Our H3 and H2 are still working great, don't see a need to upgrade any time soon.
  5. There is a Chinese brand, RideNow, that is cheaper. But of course then there is shipping, taxes etc.
  6. Unless the wheels have interchangeable end caps, I don't think it will work
  7. Via the "Phone Number" or the "Message Seller" button in the separate add, probably: https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/bike-services-and-repairs/575455/plus-spray-werks-launches-its-services?referrer=homepage One day, far in the future, my Scott Foil will no longer be lime green 😁
  8. He actually posted a small update to that review, in the summary section: [Review Update: Nov 2021 – Just a very quick note that some 18 months or so later, where I stand with the TICKR & TICKR-X. In general, it works as I saw during my multi-month review period. However, as time has gone on, I’ve seen more quirks and dropouts, even with brand new straps. This has been mirrored not just by comments in the review section, but also other friends that have picked up the TICKR & TICKR X. So while it floats around the DCR Cave for usage, at the moment it’s kinda become a last resort sensor, since I just can’t trust it’ll work every time. And since I need this type of data for testing to work every single time, it’s in the penalty box.] I have the previous gen Tickr Run, and I also get the same flatlining now and again. I'm trying a new strap now (Forza Premium), will see how that goes. You can also try resetting it: https://support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000359464-I-m-Having-Trouble-with-My-TICKR-What-Can-I-Do- Although considering you get the same on two different brand straps, I don't know what the issue could be.
  9. Agreed - at the speed most cars travel, knowing that they are there is far more useful than "ah, there is a car 56m behind me"
  10. Well, something I definitely like for example, is if I want to turn across the road. Of course, I turn my head to check, as normal. But, if I can see there are four dots coming on my Garmin, I know I have to wait and don't have to look - that reduces the possibility of drifting into the lane while looking behind me, or hitting a %^!@$ cateye and falling in front of the car(s). Edit 1: Also, I think the very bright light flashes when it detects something, which in theory should at least catch their attention? I've had a driver tell me in broad daylight that they like how visible it is. Edit 2: Also in theory, the crazy beeping coming from my head unit could help others in the group know there is a vehicle coming, and ride more predictably?

Digger, on our old XT. I can still remember the tune...
  12. My new steed. Not really N+1, as my Axis FS is going to my brother. Most components (frame, fork, wheels with tyres, crankset, shifter, derailleur, and brakes) were bought on Bikehub. About 11.5kg as is. I will probably replace the cheap handlebar and seat post with carbon ones later.
  13. The Cycleworx group rides to Wilderness via the N2 quite regularly. I haven't found the traffic too bad, although a few weeks ago during the school holidays it was a bit busy. I only moved here about a month ago, so can't help much with your questions. But based on the description by pedal menace, Strava claims the route to Outeniqua pass is 100% tar
  14. A Look at MyWhoosh Indoor Cycling App: A First Ride Explainer
  15. Sheesh, stunning! Honestly can't decide which of the above examples I like most... I'm pretty sure I can't afford even being in the same room as one
  16. I'm not sure Eskom understands (or cares) why so many people are moving to large grid-tie systems... With loadshedding only getting worse, avoiding it is about convenience. If Eskom was dependable, different story
  17. In our case, the gas stove was already installed when we bought the house. And the bottle is outside, so hopefully safe. I think the oven is a normal electric one. And the gas braai is actually my dad's, but he doesn't currently have space for it, so score!
  18. As an interim solution, I went with a trolley style setup. Two 100ah AGM batteries in the case, and a solar-capable inverter. Will consider the panels in a month or three. And lithium batteries once these are kaput. Early days, but so far no issues running our router, work laptops and multiple screens when the power is off. Or the TV, for the all-important TdF of course. And 99.9% less beeping of the multiple normal UPSs. With this and the gas stove, gas braai or the weber, and load shedding suddenly is much less annoying... Solar geyser next on the (long) list for our new house
  19. HRM is probably all you need, cadence is a bonus if you like having it. Speed should be good enough from the GPS. There are probably other brands as well, but the Marvel ones available on CWC is pretty cheap, and are dual BT/ANT+ so should work with phone and dedicated GPS. https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/marvel-heart-rate-monitor-strap https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/marvel-speed-cadence-sensor
  20. Sheesh if only we had a bigger yard... Plus the recent move has our three (much smaller, but also spoiled rotten) unsettled as is; adding pack members now would be unfair.
  21. For those that know far more than I do about inverters and solar panels, if the inverter/solar charger unit (it is similar to those Ellies trolley types that come with two 100ah batteries) has the following specs: - Power: 2500W - Voltage: 24VDC - Charging Current: 30A - PV Input Voltage Range: 30V-44V - Max PV Input Voltage (At the lowest temperature): 50V - PV Array Maximum Power: 840W How many solar panels do not blow things up? For example, a 370w panel might have the following: - Voltage at Pmax (vmp) (V) 36 - Current at Pmax (imp) (A) 10.28 Then two in parallel would not exceed the max watts, be within the voltage range, and below (too low?) the charging current?
  22. My first ride in Sedgefield, we rode to Buffels Bay this morning
  23. Not at all. I completely agree that ideally the clubs should offer some kind of value. If, per the bolded above, the clubs "jumped on the bandwagon" to get some extra money without justifying it through adding value, shame on them, and it should be taken up through the correct channels. Again this could just be a local thing, and I don't know if it is still the case as this was a few years ago, but my understanding is that at the time the local cycling shops were forced to have a club. So it might not always be a case of "the big bad clubs just want our money", is all I'm saying. What I found odd was the "principle" on the one hand, and being a rebel on the other hand. Then again, our club's fees are < R100 irc, so easy for me to speak.
  24. A principled anarchist? If you disagree with the rule, don't do the events that are simply following the rules that have been set for them by CSA? Not sure if it is still the case, but at some point part of the club fees in the Free State went to the regional body - if it were not for them there would have been 0 road events in Bloem the last two years.
