  1. At some stage that bearing siezed and then it wore out where the bearing seats. In machinery you would just weld and line bore that hole to size again. I wonder if there is a similar technique with carbon fiber resin
  2. I also live rurally, nearest tar is a good few km away. I borrowed my godfathers gravel bike in Dec for a test ride in our area. I did a big dirt road loop that I always do on the mtb and I was sold. This year I am focusing on running, but at the end of the year I will definitely be investing in a gravel bike.
  3. Glad to hear you are running pain free again and still in it. That is all that matters... I have hit a major stumbling block my side, what was a fifty shades of blue pinky toe the week before my qualifier, is now 3 weeks later fifty shades of blue and yellow foot still 3 weeks later. I have pretty much stopped running the last 2 weeks, will see how it feels moving forward, Comrades might just be a suffer fest this year.
  4. I know of 2 or 3 who were early on the Gravel wave, but the newer gravel bikes offer more clearance so you can go wider on the tires and they have changed just so they can go with wider tires for more rugged roads/conditions.
  5. No I do see huge value in 3d printing and certain things made from 3d printers. But there is a time and a place for a 3d printed plastic part, and then there is a place to take out a welder and grinder and do it with steel/aluminum. One of my favorite gadgets is a little 3d printed dust catcher for when you drill holes in walls, I have 3 different sized ones and they are perfect for it. I have also printed a few cones to turn 40 litre buckets into fly traps on the farm. But when you have 10kg of bike(and many thousand rands) mounted with plastic and you have an accident, it won't be fun having that bike come join you in the front seat because the mount is made of plastic. That is more the concern I had with the above.
  6. How do you know someone has done ironman, epic, sani2sea, went to a midlands boarding school, lives in the cape or does crossfit? They will tell you sometime in the first 5 mins of conversation...
  7. it won't end up looking like this... Also I am more of a fan of this look:
  8. All this makes me think is that more people need to learn how to weld. Take 4 offcuts of 5mm flat bar cut with a grinder, weld them together and drill the appropriate holes and you have a similar mount for next to nothing cost wise...
  9. I had similar thoughts and beliefs but Stans Crests are only rated to 2,5 bar for a 2,5 tyre, 2,6 bar for a 2,2 tyre. 10% error in the gauge will leave you with ears ringing for days, sealant up your nose and in your eyes, 1 blown out rim bent spokes and a hell of a mess to clean up. The only fun part was realising all the petrol attendants had hit the deck with the explosion.
  10. I used to do the same until I blew the tyre off the rim in the back of the car at a petrol station because the gauge was wrong. There is a clean BMW out there with a new owner who will no doubt keep finding random bits of dried sealant all over the car... Bottom line don't trust a petrol station pump. DO this test, Drive petrol station to petrol station checking your car tyre pressures. You will honestly lose your trust totally, now I have a good quality gauge at home and a compressor. A good compressor is a must in any real garage. Then you can do your cars, blow the bike out to dry it, air dust things,
  11. there are multiple threads on this if you have a search. Bottom line is as follows. You can get no name rigid forks easily enough. If you want to go to a gravel handlebar then you need different shifter/brake levers/derailleur and that is where your major costs come in. A lot cut their straight bars down narrower, put some gravel tyres on and adjust the gear ratios and ride like that.
  12. Ya, all good, got a qualifier in the bag on Sunday. Not 100% happy so might have a snipe at BNAC or wally Hayward in the next few weeks. Tonsilitis and a badly sprained toe the week before my qualifier were not ideal, but ran again this morning and felt tired but good, body handled the marathon ok considering it all. The next 8 weeks are a big mileage block, going to be interesting to see how it goes... How did the marathon go? Start batch?
  13. the air you breath, the water you drink, the food you eat, it all has stuff that was bad for you in some way. There are bigger things to worry about IMO. If you have time to worry about water bottles you live a very charmed life
  14. Never mind the fact that 100 milers, expeditions and other endurance shenanigans are not healthy for your body either. (this is hearsay though, I don't quite believe it) adds flavour.... Although I must admit as a new dad, the baby bottle sterilizer is great on soft flasks and water bottles.
  15. What I found with better nutrition on the bike/run is that your recovery is so much better after the ride and run. Which means you can hit it harder every day, day after day. Working on nutrition is as vital as fitness. You will see the body will respond to training better and better as time goes by with good nutrition. Enjoy the experience and I am glad it is starting to help. One thing to maybe look at as well is pre ride nutrition. MY dietician gave me 2 scenarios, short travel to race or long travel to race. For each there is timing and instruction on what/when to eat/drink pre race/long ride. Makes a huge difference as well.
  16. if you know where to look, there is a spectacular one out on the trails
  17. A fool and his money are easily parted....
  18. Please think through these "less lethals" a bit. If you are going to carry something, don't end up being the guy with a knife at the gun fight... Pepper spray takes a little time to kick in so you better be ready to survive until the perp is hindered enough to not be a threat. Pepperball gun- if they are armed they can simply state they thought you had a real gun and then they were acting in self defense. Knife- You better really know what you are doing. Gun- you better really know what you are doing as well, but at least you can build space and really end the situation. In my opinion carry nothing and live to fight insurance the next day, or go all in with a lot of training and a gun and be ready for a spicy ride.
  19. My mrs happens to work finance in the loyalty area at a large bank(not STD Bank). uCounts however is actually bang for buck as a client the best rewards scheme out there according to her. Vitality is an individual calculation for the savings. I just left the mrs bank to move to discovery bank, between Nike performance gear, flights and rewards we are square for the year so any further benefits makes it worth while for me. But each person needs to calculate their own crossover point... Years ago through the mrs I realised you get a better return when taking rewards and cashing the money into savings/investing it as opposed to spending in loyalty stores for certain programs. Anyway 5 years later without doing anything extra other than cashing rewards into an investment I am sitting with 30k in an investment that is earning over 9% interest and cost me absolutely 0. Yes i haven't gotten the small meaningless rewards along the way, but one of these days I will cash it for an international race as a treat.
  20. 8 years without dstv and I can honestly say i will not go back ever. You are paying to use probably 10 of the 200 channels and you are still stuck watching adverts. No thank you.
  21. and so the taper from hell started last week. So far in this 1 week taper I have got tonsilitis( now on antibiotics) and this morning after my run I think I may have broken a pinky toe on the corner of the shower. Sundays marathon is going to be a hoot
  22. if you selling the bike soon then some expanding spray foam does the job as well apparently
  23. if you put a ratchet strap around the circumference of the tyre it limits the tyre expansion a lot and then from there the tyre inflates sideways first pushing the beads outwards. This often helps get tricky tyres to seat. There are youtube videos how.
  24. might be worth adding in a session or 2. Coach has me on at least 2 sessions a week of fartleg, intervals or a sustained tempo effort, the rest is pretty much recovering between those and longer runs really.
