  4. expos are the worst thing you can do before a race in my opinion. All they do is put unnecessary steps on the legs, build up nerves you didn't need which adds stress and keeps you up at night. On top of that there is always someone selling you something which usually ends up becoming the biggest sin of trying something new on race day.
  5. honestly, the biggest thing is experience... Do lots of racing, it gets easier. You also learn you can still smash it on 2 hours of sleep with a hangover, but you send it a lot easier on 8 hours with perfect sleep and breakfast routine. You also then learn what works for you personally. You want to be hydrated, but you don't want to drink too much and have to wake to pee 3 times on race night. For me the key things are getting good food in early and then top up at start line. A lot also depends on the lead up to the race. Being relaxed at work so you have time to obsess and stress for a race is not helpful. But working late nights the whole race week and just throwing it together on the day also isn't ideal. But a balance of being busy enough that you are not over thinking but not too busy you are tired is ideal Find a better way to sleep rather than a sleeping aid. You will wake up groggy. We had a sleep consultant for our child when she was 6 months old(Best money a parent can spend). But if you apply some of those techniques it really makes a big difference. Main technique being a routine before bed, eventually that routine is like a light switch, boom you are down. Also helps if your natural life patterns align with race day. I wake at 3:45 most mornings and am passed out by 8pm most nights, means an early start for a race is just par for the course. White noise machine is also a good sneak trick if it is a noisy environment. Always give good time between dinner and bed as well.

My 2c as someone who has logged literally thousands of hours indoors. 3rd Option - if you have a gym membership find a virgin active that has a technogym ride- you can use those with zwift. 0 Investment and ok training. Run zwift on the phone. Give you a good intro or temp solution to test. Personally I would love to upgrade to a smart standalone bike like a Wahoo Shift or a zwift bike. Mainly due to drivetrain maintenance. and adjustability in position. 1 size fits all. But it is a want, not a need at all. Next best is a wheel off smart trainer with a dedicated trainer bike and set up. If you have to set up the trainer every time, you will train less. Wheel on trainers are loud and also just a pain. Wheel off is worth it in my personal opinion. For the dedicated trainer bike, cheapest heaviest drivetrain you can find on whatever frame you can get hold of. I have a mtb with a electrical connecter locking out the fork, no brakes, gravel front chainring, road 11 speed cassette, XT cranks and deraillure. Costs me R1200 a year for new drivetrain and logs 1000's of km a year between the mrs and I. Find a platform you like, I like zwift or rouvy. there are others as well. Structured training is the best use for indoor training. Get return on your time and enjoy your outdoor rides when you can because you are stronger. You need a device to run the program as well. Phone, tablet or laptop. I like an extra screen or tv for entertainment. But the big ones- dedicated space and setup and a good smart trainer. I started with a used kickr in 2017. It is still going strong
  9. I have nothing against their entry process, each year if you are in the lottery and unsuccessful you get more tickets the following year if you enter the lottery. "Each runner who enters the lottery and fails to gain entry into the Run (and otherwise doesn’t gain an entry via other means such as an aid station, sponsor, raffle, or Golden Ticket spot) will have additional tickets in the hat when entering their next lottery, regardless of whether it is the next year or a future year, thus improving the probability of being selected. Every lottery applicant will receive 2^(n-1) tickets in the hat for each failure to gain entry where n is the number of years applied. As an example: If a runner applies and fails to gain entry two times, they will have four tickets in the hat when entered in the lottery the third year (2^2), eight in fourth year (2^3), 16 in fifth (2^4), 32 in sixth (2^5), etc." You can also get entry from running an aid station this year which is a great initiative, put in effort and you can race, earn you spot. I also applaud them for not tearing the ring with entry fee. $475 is not bad for a dollar based entry fee, especially in terms of the prestige of the event. UTCT and UCT are about R6200, and western states around R8800, so it is expensive but not over the top. They had over 9500 people in the lottery this year, they could seriously hike the prices and still sell out, but they have not done that.

  11. Ya it is more a luck/perseverance thing with a lottery. You can also win golden tickets by winning other major ultras.
  12. Literally been on this mission for a few days now. TIC covers sports, but if you go over 3500m above sea level it does not cover the sport. If you are from the UK, the race organiser(Silk Road MTB) recomended yellow jacket. Otherwise you are probably best off with SafetyWing but it is fairly expensive I have Discovery and have topped up with TIC and hoping for the best between the 2...
  13. I absolutely hate chugging. No you are not doing this for charity. You are doing it because you want to do it. If there was no such thing as charity you would still be doing it. So just own it and do it and pay your own way. If you wanted to support the charity you would run the campaign and not do the event. Your entry fee, travel, accommodation etc would also go to the charity. rant over... Negotiate with the Mrs, budget hard and go do what you want to do with your money. You will enjoy the event more and the only pressure is your own. This is a personal journey you are undertaking to challenge yourself and learn more about yourself. You don't need to involve random people to add pressure to it.
  14. before you get ripped a new one by a cycle brand. Just buy a cheap set of aero bars of takealot for the indoor trainer. Under R400 you can get a full set up, more than adequate for an indoor trainer.

  18. nothing... Don't spend more money, rather spend the time on the bike and it will tell you what needs upgrading. But for up to 20km non technical rides those bikes are perfect.
  19. That is what makes diets such a great business plan. 90% of people who are needing to lose weight will go through the following phases: Need to lose weight, search the latest fad diet... Buy a book, buy different food(usually costly), juicers/blenders, cooking equipment, shakers, seminars, audiobooks etc etc etc. $$$$$ Off they go and for a few weeks they have big success, life is good, focus, dedication. A few months down the way they realise it is not sustainable. Because the method of dieting is cutting the input, drastically creating a ridiculous caloric deficit. Then the person fails and gives up. A few months later there is an incident that makes the person think that they need to lose weight again. Wash rinse and repeat. How many people have been to an actual dietician before spending money on a fad diet from a usually unqualified source?
  20. would not recommend a gravel bike there... Plenty of free gravel grinding that is relatively safe out Pretoria east side. For a 25 km you could park at Hazeldean Shopping Center, ride down past curro, through cowhouse and out to Rosemary hill and back. That will give you 23ish km, you can go further past rosemary on that road if you want a few more km. You can also go back past cowhouse up to boschkop and back via the dirt path next to lynnwood/graham road back to hazeldean. If you look at the strava heatmaps for Pretoria east from cowhouse or from hedianga area you will find plenty of fantastic gravel options...

  22. Depends what suits you. I have never had issues with the extreme lights. 2 hours is not a lot of runtime and they simple and very robust. You can get replacement batteries if you need as well. Really just a good option, if not as refined as some of the international products. My other bike light I have been running the last few months is a K-light Ultra racer powered by a son 28 hub. It is hands down one of the best lights for riding. At slow speed you get a nice wide light that does not shine too far ahead. As you pick up speed the beam stretches forward and gets brighter. At 20kmh it is as good as a car light. When you stop it stays on with a dull 'stand light' for about 4 minutes. But it involves wiring, a new front hub and some resistance when riding. It also powers a red flashing rear light and can charge a phone or gps. But it is overkill for the riding you describe
  23. I am not racing Silk Road Mountain race on borrowed wheels, just not worth the risk of failure. Nick the wheel builder built me a new wheel with a son dyno hub for the front for the trip, that one I am not even mildly concerned about. I would have sent the rear down to him to get new spokes this week, but I have multiple 100 mile races in the next 2 weeks so I need the wheel fixed quickly unfortunately. My LBS is solid as well, they are rebuilding the wheel as well. I am in limbo in terms of getting a new wheel built anyway so I have matching rims and then maybe a hope hub rear. But I have time to think about that.

    don't plan your water carry based on average conditions. Plan it for worst case scenario and/or if sh...t hits the fan.
  25. They snapped at the nipple side, so not chain issues. Sounds like I will be rebuilding the wheel fully then. Thanks for the input.
