  1. this is the second stolen bike listed on fb marketplace for sale in mozambique in the last few weeks
  2. different story if it is something you play with yes. But I see the same with reloading rifle ammo. there is a massive push to get everyone reloading, chasing the lands, looking for nodes etc etc etc. You see posts like you won't have accuracy with factory ammo, you need to reload. Meanwhile people have been, and will continue putting meat in the freezer on factory ammo with ease. I ran out of time to load ammo a few wees ago for first hunt of the season so I bought factory ammo and spent a few days on the range with it and then had a very successful hunt. I would far prefer spending time on the range with factory ammo than losing range time trying to sort out reloads in a rush. This weekend I went and loaded up 100rounds to get me through the season and probably next year but I did that to save money and because I enjoy experimenting and tinkering. Same as hot wax- Left right and center you see posts saying use hot wax/dipping chains, its better, normal lube is obsolete and useless and then you see guys dropping money on pots, spending hours and stuff for essentially a tiny gain. They would be better off spending the time/money on an indoor trainer where returns are bigger. Clean your chain, lube regularly and you get 95% there with ease and convenience. If you want to tinker go for it.
  3. honestly we over think this stuff way too much... Current drive train, my chain is in spec at just over 4000km. The first 2000km were a bikepacking race where it got dragged through countless rivers every day, rained on, snowed on, frozen. All I did was wipe it with a rag and add more smoove lube when needed. Chains(good ones) have come a long way and so has lube.
  4. please mount an XL 32" bike on a car rack and see how far out it sticks both ends
  5. honestly I was always skeptical but ya that lot sent me into super distrust central... First time I didn't take a car to my mechanic before buying it, it had a clean report. Anyway a week later gearbox went and they paid over 100k to redo the gearbox and other issues on that car. 70k km later the gearbox threw the same error. I turned car off, turned it on again, error was not there, drove it straight back to where it came and sold it to them. I do feel bad but someone else bought that car with a new clean report and I know that gearbox was again a ticking time bomb.

  7. my 2c (and we know opinions are like rectums. we all have one, you may not want to hear mine) We each have a risk tolerance. If it were a dealer or broker you will have more trust but likely pay more. You also have more recourse to call out a company than an individual. If it is a 2k Giant Liv on FB marketplace listed by a random as an unwanted prize, probably a lot less trust and nearly 0 recourse. But end of the day the decision is up to you based on your historical experience and risk aversion. Bikehub has done a lot to try drop the risk with bikehub pay. It is there in the details: https://help.bikehub.co.za/en/articles/4611636-how-does-bike-hub-pay-protect-me-as-a-buyer If bike arrives with a hole in the frame when listed as 'barely used' send it back with bikehub pay. Reason: Item not received as described. If you are ordering without seeing it, not using bikehub pay and blindly trusting anyone then maybe time to reconsider a few things. The other thing to consider is an actual accident with 0 Malice. That hole is behind a chain ring, seller might be trading bikes left right and center and not had time to inspect every element and have missed a key issue. It happens we are humans.
  8. Question is do you trust anyone selling something second hand? If you do the joke is one you... Question, check, research and inspect.
  9. wahoo kickr and core's tend to hold their value pretty well. You can always buy and know you will probably not take a huge hit selling it again in a few months. My 2c
  10. I would use current setup till it is worn out. It is perfectly functional. Then when it needs to be replaced look at either a wide range 11 speed cassette like an 11-50 or 12 speed upgrade with a 10-50 cassette. A wide range 11 speed cassette will give you 90% of the 12 speed performance but a fraction of the cost. Remember to go to a 10-50 you need a different freehub body, derailleur etc. But with Shimano odds are you can get an 11-50 to work on same freehub and derailleur. My old mtb I went to 1x11 and managed to get an 11-50 to work easily. The sunrace cassettes are well priced so it was a natural upgrade to the bike. Financially it did not make sense to go upgrade a 12 speed setup. That bike runs on the trainer and being good old shimano I just run an 11 speed road cassette on the xt derailleur and it is 100%. My new bike is 1x12 with a 10-52, when buying new it was financially more feasible. Performance gains in how wide the gear ratio is not as big as expected. What I will say is that if you do go with a new derailleur, get an electric one so you can track shifting. Because you are a parent and can't expect a youngster to figure out gear ratios so an electric shifter gives you information to guide them. Below is a graph of time spent in each gear on normal gravel loop I ride before work. I can see that I am using only the top end gears so I need to go up a chainring size on front chain ring for my normal training riding Below is a well balanced setup where the front chain ring was the perfect size and you can see gear usage is balanced And then below is where I should have put a smaller front chain ring on because I spent too much time in Granny gear(34km 2500m climb.) The point is you can find the correct front chain rings for leg strength and terrain.
  11. is it just me that actually wants to vomit when I hear the term influencer? Like really just f right off. Why are we not listening to professionals and experts in the industry. But rather we listen to people who have the ability to use their persona to sell stuff left right and center. Making them stupid amounts of money for being good at nothing other than being a social butterfly and professional bull sh tt r ok it is friday, I need to bounce and go enjoy riding my bike.
  12. great if you have a toy garage, crap if you have a get **** done garage/work shop/ shed

Race around Rwanda is also aimed at international riders and not at local riders. Local riders do get a cheap entry for development reasons but there are other hints at international field target Euro based entry fee The headline sponsor is PEdALED which while it originates in Japan, it is made in Italy and very much a European brand Then if you look at things included which are specifically targeted to international riders: Luggage storage during the race Discounts at partnering hotels in Kigali Race goodies (incl. T-shirt, race cap, Rwandan gifts) Local SIM card

I think that is 2 parts to why it was not bigger 1: first year event, I know events like gravel burn did well, but they threw bucket loads of cash at marketing and getting big names there. But people are often nervous of the first edition. I would have been there if I did not have a 3 week old baby. But I have the green light for next year already... 2: I think the internationals are a bit nervous of our crime rates for these types of events being out alone in isolated areas all times of the night. Granted when you get rural enough in South Africa I certainly believe it is far safer than in urban and peri urban areas. But, having farm murders all over the news doesn't help events where you are essentially cycling through farm land areas most of the time. But that is a different argument. I hope this event builds a good following, the media on the ground has been good. Hopefully next year will be a big field with some international names.

looks like a lekker event, I have considerable fomo I must say
  16. you will see, a lot of the major brands use Pertex Fabric think the shield 20k/20k, it has 2 stats, a hydrostatic head for waterproof and then also a volume of breathability to get out water vapor
  17. match the jacket to the expectations and then decide on what hydrostatic head will work best for you. If you are expecting big weather then it is worth investing in something good. From my experience in bikepacking circles Albion Zoa, Arc'Teryx are fairly popular. The albion is designed for the hood to go over or under a helmet which is something I did not know I wanted in my life until I was caught in a snow storm at 3400m above sea level. I have been doing AR with a Helly Hansen jacket and it got me through Silk Road last year and then for lighter trail runs and stuff the Salomon Bonati is also a great jacket. Both will do fine for basic bikepacking.
  18. "Square interface" Aka a "tow hitch receiver", right terminology might get you a better answer when searching of phoning around
  19. no stress, I just remembered it because I think I read a gear article every 2 days on that site last year...

  21. A bill drill from concealment is around 2,5-3,5 seconds for most. Even in a seated position I have seen sub 3 second bill drills. This guy gives a full 5 second opportunity while he clears and loads his weapon. This is one of those situations where the perp was very lucky there was no one aware of their surroundings and competently carrying...
  22. mother of gun safety laws cringing in all directions. Everyone in that room(including the gunman) is lucky to not have been shot accidently by that idiot.
  23. looking at the profile the seller looks like he just unloads potentially stolen goods all day every day
  24. I am at 100% worst case scenario being on the ultra distance athlete segment/plan. My weekly goal is 1200 points, which for me that is 4 runs or 6 easy 1 hour bike rides. I managed a 24 week streak of that last year. Use it don't use it. My 4 year old Fenix 6x has 4x the battery life and a bunch of other features and in 2022 cost me less than what the polar costs now. Food for thought. This^ I set up not more than one or 2 data fields per screen view and then just pan between them based on what I am up to. I also really like the alerts, 30min alerts on the bike to keep up with fuel strategy or auto 1km laps when running to control pace on runs where I am not following a dedicated workout. Another thing to think about with a smart watch. Yes they are expensive, but how much time do you use it. Hundreds of hours tracking training per year, plus normal day to day watch use and for me the health tracking is getting really good. I can spot when my resting heartrate has spiked for the night and then I know i need to take it easy. It also tells me when I am over reaching which is more than I care to admit. I was sick recently and it even gave me heartrate warnings. So there is a lot that is does and when you work out the spend vs usage it is not actually that bad. Same as a mattress, spend 20k on a mattress that you spend 7 hours a night on it and people feel bad spending so much. But people buy a 30k bike to ride 7 hours a week without blinking.
  25. their flight discount is more of a joke... I wanted to use it to book my trip last year. Best price was 18k via turkey with emirates and the vitality discount. Went to emirates website directly and all of a sudden there is a flight via Dubai for 16k.
