  1. Here I was thinking this thread was going to be where teams are drawing the line in ethics of the sport. Sticky bottles, blocking riders, support vehicles towing riders back to the bunch, helping supply drugs, tampering with samples etc....
  2. No worries, never fun when DB updates/maintenance throw spanners in the works.
  3. I got an EX10 server error this morning, but that corrected itself as well.
  4. I honestly don't know how much corrosion will happen in 3 days. I would give it all a spray with Castrol DWF each day(except brake rotors and pads) on top of regular maintenance. After the race ASAP strip everything, clean and regrease.
  5. But would you toe the line of mac mac 200miler with them? I may be wrong here. But when last was comrades, London ,Boston, Berlin or any major marathon won in sandals? Even on the trail scene, utmb, Western states, hardrock, spine race. When last did sandals win there? I also think great in summer, but when skyrun decides it is going to do skyrun things and you end up running in 0deg Temps. You gonna have gloves on your hands and sacrifice a toe or 2? Not saying you can't run fast in them. I was sub 18min 5km barefoot back in high school. But you will be faster in carbon plate doping shoes.
  6. There are a few scientific studies around carbon plated shoes. Long gone are the days where records and wins will happen in non carbon plated shoes. Just running in any old shoe is perfectly fine for the average Joe just looking not to get injured running a little bit each week. Those sandals will get you injured or set you back.
  7. people also bought power balance bracelets, almond milk and other such things, so I dunno why you are surprised they are pressing vinyl still...
  8. Good quality shoes that are from a reputable brand from a year or 2 ago is no issue in my opinion. They will keep you running comfy and help with injuries. If you are chasing pb's /wins then you cannot deny the shoe doping that will have you running in carbon plated shoes, there is no way around that. Running in MrP/Pep/no name shoes is dangerous in my opinion, as dangerous as thinking you can run in shoes till the sole is worn through... As for sponsored athletes and equipment, do not believe a single part of it. Just because it is a branded bottle, doesn't mean that brand is actually in the bottle. Also what works for a pro will potentially not work for you. Carbon soles for a 2:30 marathoner great, but for a 90kg 5 hour marathoner they do nothing.
  9. If it is titanium and bikes you like then you need to look at the matching motorbike(seeing as you mentioned a husky) Have a youtube troll at W Robert Ransom, he is building a really cool full titanium motorbike, frame to fairings all custom titanium.
  10. I was not keen on the idea, but my new bike came with AXS. I can tell you now I will never buy another cable shifting bike ever. When the Mrs bike next needs to be serviced it is also getting the AXS upgrade. It just works, shifts are exact. You don't faff as much with shifts and setting up cable tension etc. The AXS also has the overload clutch which allows the derailleur to move out the way, so there is no longer the need to carry a spare drop out/hanger. My next dream(and potential ultra tinker project) power meter + AXS + Cadence Meter + gps input + AI algorithm = Auto shifting bicycle Also would love to see more like Dangerholm's internal handlebar shifter.
  11. 1: those volcan frames were very very beautiful. I had a friend get sponsored one when he was living with us. I helped him build the bike back in the day and had serious bike envy. But his old man actually scrapped the frame a few years ago because of the same issue(and they could get a frame from his new sponsor for a good deal) 2: Send it for carbon repairs and save a good frame
  12. you figure out a map fairly easily, just make sure you always know exactly where you are(also helps to have an hons degree in geographical information). Sadly it is also a massive confidence thing, for the not so natural navigators you can take a person out the race with a few small comments and the one or 2 mistakes everyone will make. It also helps riding within your means. 1 thing following a map when you are on the limit, another when you just cruising along. I think as well, having the maps before hand to prepare and having the notes, you can ID sections to relax and sections where you need to focus.
  13. looks like Harris might be taking the alternate route up the escarpment
  14. tie it to your back and run lehana's...
  15. Look the 800km is also relative. A 90kg runner will ruin shoes faster than a 50kg runner and different surfaces also have different affec. I honestly found that if you pick and choose and work around specials it does make life easier. Most of my shoes are bought on yellow ticket sales or onedayonly. Often I buy multiple of the same shoe. For example leading up to the last 100miler I had 4 pairs in rotation, 2 road and 2 trail. but it was only 2 models of shoe and one was the trail version of the other. That was also like 4 months with over 100km a week. Now I have 3 totally different brands, similar set up in terms of support and drop, but all name brands that were on special.
  16. With Hope hubs you also just order the adaptors, 2 min job to swap them out.
  17. So who all is glued to the dots? It has been a good start for Alex Harris and Mike Woolnough, but having just seen a vid of the conditions at the top of lehana's it is going to be a rough up there today
  18. if you are in GP, find yourself a decathlon, they have a few options under a grand. I know 2 guys that went top 10 in sky run with decathlon shoes
  19. I bought a gen 1 Kickr second hand about 4 years ago. I actually am scared to check how many thousands of KM's have been done on it. My wife and I get away with the same size frame so there is an old hardtail bike on it and we adjust the seat height between us. Dirt cheap heavy 10 speed drivetrain on it and really the running costs drop considerably. If you are sharing with family/spouse you can add family members to a single rouvy membership as well, makes it also a bit more affordable.
  20. There is your ultimate self defense tool. Awareness. Be aware of your surroundings, be aware of others, sounds, movements etc etc. Best defense is avoiding a situation all together, the more time you have to react, the better. Cycling with a gun, well yes and no. Most that have an incident, go out and buy a gun afterwards, take a 2 day training course and carry from the day their license comes through onwards sonder training- Yes Moron. If you going to carry, you better spend a lot of time training with the weapon, so that it is second nature etc. Yes the odd well trained individual will be carrying and someone like that who is well trained is probably good for most situations because they will likely spot the incident a good 2-3seconds before you would. i.e. gentlemen like the man who temporarily ended a lot of the spruit hijackings a year or 2 back. A lot of this also applies to day to day carrying. Also with a Glock- it is draw and fire. The the safety is built into the trigger, not an external safety so once you are ready to take the shot( all decisions have been made, you have no other option and the attack is not avoidable) you can just present and start firing. You can also carry 1 up(round in the chamber) safely in holster- also extends mag by 1 round(the more the merrier). But again - if someone is carrying, they better be training consistently. This isn't like a little marathon where you can get lazy and then come race day just suffer through. If you get lazy- race day will be a very dangerous situation. But the big old gun debate, it is a big one, and with a bike involved it gets complex
  21. ironic gps devices for use in a gym, where the gps part is null and void by being indoors and basically it is an expensive hrm.
  22. I hate these assumptions but sometimes you just want to let the world know that something smelled off and if it gets someone a bike back then ya. I saw a 150k carbon soft tail for sale for 12k- as an urgent sale on the weekend. Could be someone needing money and selling, but ya all on assumptions. It is always a minefield to step through. My suggestion- look on the bikehub stolen bikes section, look through the local mtb group pages for matching stolen bikes and if you find a match let them know. Other than that not much more you can do without stepping on toes.
  23. Love it, good luck with the build up again, take it easy. I am sure you will be comfortable with shorter runs soon enough. New Hoka's look good
  24. that also being said, I can appreciate good medics and safety on route, we have organised events before, usually smallish ones, and medics are the one cost I am always happiest to pay, and insurance, but I think the shift is when it is events for the love of the sport, and events as full time jobs. Which ya, people gotta eat.
