It uses and eccnetric BB to tension the chain, love the clean look of not having to run a tensioner at the back. Also get your hands on a halflink chain. It sorted out the issues i had with my chain jumping off over the rough stuff. At the moment im running a 34/16 which seems to work well as long as there arent too many long flat sections.

Are R1's actually lighter? If I've got it right thr R1's are 261g with upgraded levers while the Old Shimano XTR M975 is 217g standard!
