  1. Hope it gets more people to become organ donars. Just yesterday I had somebody ask my why I had a red sticker on my drivers card, showed him it was my organ donar sticker - he thought it very weird and did not understand the value of being an organ donar.
  2. I don't go with the theory of the bumps, should have made it more clear in my post. But +1 on the fit part - my wife damaged my motorbike helmet after she put it on (she has a thick mullet of hair ) I believe the same principles apply to all helmets, if you crash it, replace it and if it no longer fits snug, replace it. Its a small price to pay for the well being of your head.
  3. OK, I see my post was misleading - I meant the protective foam. My boet in law gave me the low down on the manufacturing methods used, the difference between a motorbike helmet and cycle helmet foam and the max speed these helmets are designed to protect you against - for him the world is about energy and energy transfer. I think TNT nailed it good by saying we should look at amount of hours used
  4. Marketing hype. We discussed this last year (and the year before). The protective layers do not degrade over time (my boet in law is an engineer who gave me a very technical low down on the story and he is also a biker) Where the 3/5 years comes from is that people tend to drop and knock their helmets and this will cause minor fractures over time. It also depends on the individual. The actual rule should be replace after every major crash as you don't always see the damage.
  5. Saw one in Stellies last week, little ghetto bandit on a schweet ride, was a large frame.
  6. I've found no issues with Endomondo except when you loose the GPS signal. I stopped using my Android phone as it was too weak and my 9300 BB has been perfect. But I always charge my phone before I go riding.
  7. We have all been there ... but keep it as she is, nothing wrong with Aliveo and you never have to apologise to anybody on this forum or on the trail as to what you ride. If your really itching to burn cash then upgrade to external BB crankset - I went from Aliveo to Sram X5 two weeks ago (R1K pluse R250 for tool). Man, what a difference. But do start investing in tools to service your own bike first, ask around, shop around as some tools are overpriced. Look at a good floor stand as well, even those ones they use to display bikes (RRP R150) is good enough. From my own experience I've learnt that gear is just as important. A good Camelbak is essential, comfortable shades, comfortable gloves and comfortable bibs/pants are much needed.
  8. Started on Oros, tried other stuff and went back. Good enough for when I was a kid, so why not good enough for me as an adult. I always carry a sachet of Game in Camelbak for when I suffer from water boredom on long rides. Oros/Game and the AJ muti mix is all I care for. Also interesting to see Asker Jurgen tweet big about Gatoraid at the moment
  9. CWC rocks
  10. I agree with OP but I would prefer to see medals for top places and then tokens for finishing - I would treasure a "I survived the 40km Die Burger MTB challenge" keyring (or similar item) a lot more than the generic medal I got. I also never got a medal for the first race I completed (should have) and that would have been the only time I truly wanted a medal. Perhaps giving out participation badges like Motorbikers do might be another solution - would look funky on my cycling top
  11. K.I.T.T. reloaded - does it also come with turbo boast
  12. I rode 7 mths with a skew crank, not always obvious. In my case I have a sprained ankle and always thought it was my ankle giving me grief until my wife commented when she rode my bike. Just replaced the crankset this weekend and cannot believe I never noticed it before.
  13. +1 Was actually wondering what to do with my T&C continental that I punctured with a nail - this will like magic
  14. Perhaps some East London Hubbers can recommend some bike stores for you to go to. I nearly made the mistake of buying a Game bike and then by chance I walked into a bike store and spoke to the mechanic (someone I know), he convinced me not to make the mistake and no regrets. Love cycling ever since.
  15. As a parent I cannot imagine what his parents must be going through at the moment, all I can say is my condolences.
  16. Well the going rate is three chains to a cassette. Double check your chain and see if their are any tight spots. Perhaps some lube will help.
  17. The cycle lanes are from good intention but I've noticed the lack of planning as mentioned by the OP as my morning bus bases that route. Best is to either tweet Helen Zille or contact your local DA ward counciler and ask who you can speak to - thats what I always do
  18. I always do my homework and in the price range I've been buying, SRAM gets the most votes for best value for money. It was never my intention to convert to SRAM but I only realised that it has just been happening
  19. LBS = Local Bike Store OBS = Online Bike Store Its time for that topic again ... So I need a new crankset and my OBS are my first port of call, cool I can get a nice Shimano with external BB for R900 from a local OBS, our UK OBS will cost me R800 for replacement crankset with square tapper BB I then decide that since there is an LBS on the ground floor where I work on the corner of Loop & Waterkant Street, Cape Town CBD, I pop in their to get a 3rd quote, R1K for SRAM X5 incl external BB. Not bad I think. While I know our upcountry cousins get ripped a big one with their LBS, its still nice to see in the Cape that most LBS's will still give you good value for your money and not require you to use an OBS.
  20. I'm a Shimano man all the way but through sly tactics of South African LBS's, I'm being converted to SRAM!!!! Please make the bad men stop!!!! I don't want smooth shifting, I want to suffer - no pain, no gain. I want chain suck, I want overpriced components! I want SHIMANO!!!! Let me explain how this has happened, in the last 6 months I've been upgrading to 9spd from 8spd (yes, old school all the way). In the process I got some killer Shimano LX shifters from CWC (still got Vee's), but then SRAM reared its demonic head (must be that power of Monster Drinks)!!! It first started with the cassette, then the chain and now next week my X5 crankset gets ordered (the Shimano one I bought last year has dissapointed me). A new SRAM front derailleur is next months purchases ... thank goodness my shifter will keep my rear-derailleur Shimano but I don't know for how long!!!! Please hubbers, is this wrong, and I'm putting this in the same league as those thoughts one has of your hot cousin!!!
  21. My previous employer was involved in the largest SMS campaign in South Africa and all was required was the user SMS "house" - do you think that was possible, nope. I did wrote the code for another campaign and people had to sms car brands (Ford, Audi, Mazda) and even then this campaign tested my coding skills to the max.
  22. Well mine is cycle touring and my plans are: 2013 - cycle tour from Cape Town to PE (got exams still this year and next else would have been this year) 201(4/5) - cycle tour from Sydney to small Australian town called Hay (its a 700km trip) I also want to cycle tour Alaska and Canada at a latter stage.
  23. Nothing stupid about posting here. Its not an attack on you. Rather be safe than sorry, thats what the Hub is for
