  1. Nice!! Enjoy! I was watching the Redbull Romaniacs on Saturday, thinking to myself how much I missed my KTM... And then watching the likes of Graham Jarvis struggling and remembering how much I struggled on way less technical stuff, I was like, "Umm, maybe not so much..."
  2. Padlock idea is the way to go. And since your bike is attached to it fit the sturdiest padlock you can (and make sure, if your insurance is one of those that stipulates the thickness of bike cable you need etc etc, that they are happy with it...) I fitted a padlock to my removable towbar, even though my bike rack doesn't attached to it. Figured the sheer weight in scrap would make it desirable to the shopping trolley brigade to steal if the opportunity presented itself...
  3. Yip, me too! Day I turned 16, I wrote my 50cc learners license… And as soon as I was 18, I wrote the big bike license... I was less stressed about car and the full licenses, but it was a big thing to have that freedom... Most of my mates were the same... Today it seems completely different... We have family who have a son in his mid 20s... He hasn't even written his learners... Mom and dad took him to work every day and fetched him... Until he was retrenched... now he sits at home playing computer games all day... Mind you, for my mates and I the motorbike was more than just a means of getting from A to B, we just rode because we could!
  4. Ain't that the truth - that bike was originally blue and I stripped it, resprayed and put new tyres, grips etc on it a few years back for his sister... and even doing it myself cost me nearly as much as buying a cheapie!
  5. Ah... that epic moment for any cyclist parent - when their little one rides for the first time without training wheels! Whoop whoop! My 5 year old on Saturday: The look on his face says it all! He was riding around yelling, "Look at me dad, I'm riding without training wheels!" He also rode straight into his sister and later took himself out in a clothesline type of move as he rode into the merry-go-round, but that just led to a early 'you go where you look' lesson... And best part for him is he's riding before his sister who is 8 (and much to my disappointment just isn't interested in riding, but I deliberately haven't pushed her). Of course, now I have to persuade my wife for two of us that we need new bikes/upgrades, not just me any more... But that hand-me-down pink bike with stupid backpedal brakes needs to go...
  6. Mother's Day lunch... Took a piece of pork (removed the skin and salted and cooked separately in oven to make crackling) and coated it in a dry rub (made up of brown sugar, braai spice, salt, pepper and mustard powder) the night before. Then left in Weber with a C ring of coals with mesquite wood chips for 4 hrs... Served with roast veg, caulimash (my wife and mom are doing the low carb thing at the moment) and potato wedges (for the kids and I who rather enjoy our carbs)... Had a happy mother and wife on Sunday...
  7. Now the taxi knows how it's passenger's feel during rush hour!
  8. Um... the presence of dogs and cats however would suggest it's a vet???
  9. Lego sale on Takealot today, some good discounts, particularly if you want the crane set above... #justsaying
  10. Heck yeah! Sure, smaller ops (grommets, tonsils etc) might only have a R1000 or R2000 shortfall... so that's not so bad, but both births of our kids had R5 - R7k shortfalls and my wife's ACL replacement 5 years ago had over a R20 000 shortfall! So, yeah, I happily pay my gap premium every month! In terms of the op, I'd rather have to go for the snip again than to the dentist! In and out in a couple of hours. Had it done on a Friday, so could rest the weekend and read the kids the riot act that if they jumped on daddy's lap they'd catch a klap! But I had only mild discomfort and to be safe stayed off the bike for a couple of weeks, but I wasn't riding that much at that point in time, so it wasn't a big deal for me...
  11. I had an awesome ride at Hemel & Aarde on Saturday... Was surprised how much of the trail was open! Only section not open because of the fire was the climb above Camphill Farm. The route now takes you around the bottom of Camphill and then up the gorge. But the signage has all been repaired and updated and the portage at the top of the gorge has been rebuilt. Kudo's to the guys who are maintaining the trails! Some of the landscape was quite stark and burnt. And scarily, a month later, there is still smoke rising out of some of the patches of blue gums along side the tar road! But also cool to see new growth already popping out in the burnt areas...
  12. If there was ever a bike that totally deserved to be customized by bearded hipsters, it was the CX500... Man, they're ugly in their natural state!!
  13. I'm an insurance broker... Fine print is my daily life!
  14. I say go for it!! (but then it's not my R10K nor my Mrs that has to be explained to why I came home with an old motorbike)
  15. Thanks for updates... Very sad
  16. Does anyone know how badly the Hemel & Aarde trail was affected by the fire? I was there last week and had some awesome rides and my heart sank when I saw the smoke rising out of the valley!
  17. Stoffel76

    Who remembers?

My kids love it too... And even though there's singing (musicals are my least favourite genre of movie!), this one is like a 'kiddies' James Bond which makes it kinda cool in my book: Produced by Albert BroccoliBased on an Ian Fleming novelStars Gert Frobe as the bad guyStars Desmond Llewelyn as the motor workshop ownerAnd then of course the car that can do all that cool stuff!
  18. I was actually waiting for the Toyota drivers to chirp, "Just like a real Landy, it wooden go!"...
  19. OK, so I've never been any good at woodwork, but I was doing a repair on something at home and had an offcut of wood and so made this for my son: First time since school days that I've made anything out of wood... It's super simple, being basically 2D, but the wheels are wide enough apart so it stands on its own and my boy loved it and took it everywhere with him!
  20. Lol, I realized the other day I'm getting old... There's an NC that parks outside our office most days. I found myself looking at the NC going, "That looks nice!" and ignoring the CBR that was parked next to it!! 18 year old me wouldn't have been able to see past the CBR (or ZXR/ZZR/FZR/GSXR etc etc)
  21. Kawa, Honda, Suzuki, Yammie, KTM, Husky, BM etc... Who cares *, it's a bike! And I bet the grin on your boy's face is ear to ear under that helmet! * PS Except a Harley of course...
  22. The bike must be a Mongoose...
  23. So your South African license wasn't accepted there? When I was there visiting my sister, we drove down to Rotorua... I remember thinking how awesome (apart from all the rain! ) those roads are for motorcycling. Smooth, well maintained, twisting through the undulating 'Hobbit' hill country and then most of the car drivers driving properly would make it a fair bit safer than there! Enjoy!!
  24. Actually, according to some of Southern suburbs Capetonian's I know, anything north of Bellville is JHB!!
