  1. I've used this one a couple of times at home. Never needed to on the road and although other types are easier with leverage, it's not that difficult. I think if you have a glove on, it might give you better grip
  2. Saw it's on. Realy awesome movie, especially for roadies. Makes you wanna get on your bike and just ride
  3. This pisses me off. I have a friend who refuses to wear a seatbelt because "that one time" a seatbelt killed someone. I get furious with him.
  4. Well, road shoes are much stiffer (easy now) than mtb shoes. Clipping in doesn't really matter as you only really clip in and out once a ride. You can't compare crank brother pedals to shimano pedals. Compare them to time or look.
  5. I see your point capricorn, but maybe it's to do with your likelyhood to crash and the type of impact between road and DH. To go faster, people compromise. Think of the built between a rally car vs formula 1 car
  6. Yup. Not long after I started riding I fell with my mtb riding at 50km/h. Stopped the fall with my hands and head. Both arms broken and only slight concussion. Picked up helmet parts all over the place. I'd say a helmet does a pretty darn good job. Doesn't matter how light fast roadie helmets are, if they're approved by whoever, then they should do the job
  7. Top tube is the tube running between the seatpost and the headtube(through which your fork goes). This being dirty will only make your bike look dirty. It won't have any effect on the steering. Problem is probably what schinn lover or the break said. The underside of the headtube could also be dirty from dust/sand/mud flying in from your front wheel
  8. Just clear this up: Toptube or headset or headtube? Only take it apart if you know how to properly set the headset after you're done.
  9. Maintenance + petrol for avg car according to AA is R2.93/km 64km round trip x R2.93 = R3750 + toll =
  10. Go to groenkloof nature reserve. Just about the best place in Gauteng north for mtb. Oposite groenkloof you can go and ride at Voortrekker monument. Once you're fit enough you can go there with your bike via Botha laan. I'm from Irene and we usually ride there from here.
  11. When commuting I save more than R200 a day. This include fuel, toll and car maintenance. That's R4k a month. Unfortunatly it's not always possible.
  12. I was almost run over 3 times in the last 24h by a car, bakkie and taxi. Not on topic but I had to get it out of my system.
  13. After the saterday super rugby, prob still sleeping. Might wake up early and watch a bit of the Argus on Supersport
  14. Wouldn't say easy answer. There are lots of possibilities which could also be stress, not eating enough etc.
  15. For 25h a week you'd need about 9h of sleep.
  16. Was thinking of getting the Triathlete's training bible to get perspective on the multisport side of things. Yes the Jock is weird.
  17. If I was only a roadie, this would be much easier. Racing/Peaking in summer and start with base training in winter. How do you do periodization if you do mtb, road riding, trail running and road running. Ok I'm not that worried about road running. It's more for the fun. Do you look at your main events for the year and structure it around that? For this year it's the jock in July, Gauteng Trail running series in June/July, Isuzu 3 Towers in October and Thule 4 peaks trail run in October/November somewhere.
  18. 30km one way. Takes 1h20 with road and 1h40 with mtb. Got no showers at work. Luckily there's a virgin active about 2km from work which I use. Biggest problem is that I can't work late or take my laptop home when I commute
  19. Yesterday I did a 3.5h ride with only 1 bottle of 32gi and no breakfast. For a race you could just drink a bottle before hand as well
  20. For me, both are the same. I do my own maintenance though. Road has handlebar tape that needs replacing once a blue moon. MTB has disc brakes that needs bleeding once a blue moon.
  21. It doesn't shorten the muscle. It's just because you don't use your hamstring as much if you only cycle. If you lie on the couch the whole day, all your muscles will shorten Do hamstring stretches and you should be fine. Better yet, if you were at RUNNING Inn, you've already found the solution...RUNNING
  22. Maybe next year they can advertise the race, so that I don't have to explain to everyone what I'm watching on tv. Favourites: Giving local guys chance for better racing. We've got our own tour Got to watch the start
  23. Always used squirt. My last buy was motorex(as recommended by tread magazine I think). Going back to squirt. Don't care if they say it doesn't last long, but my drivetrain is just so much cleaner with squirt. After one long ride with motorex everything is full of black oil and don't even try to touch the chain. Squirt is also super easy to apply to the chain. I'm currently using a syringe with a needle to apply the motorex, otherwise half of it lands on the floor.
  24. Almost gave up halfway through the hill to walk a bit, but luckily found some energy to push through. Must have been that large pizza from saterday evening.
