  1. I just finished building my first full suspension. Full carbon Volcan 26 inch frame with 27.5 wheels. I struggled to find reasonably priced parts so ended up with a new 1x10 LTwoo groupset, which shifts smoother than the Shimano Alivio I have on my hardtail. Rest was made up of parts I have gathered over the years. All I need now is a shorter stem and a wider bar.
  2. Very difficult to answer this one. It would depend on many things. It would depend on the terms of your policy and of course the insurance company that you are with. Some companies will look for any reason not to pay and others will help. For example, my policy specifically excludes cosmetic damage, so they probably won't cover the scratches on the groupset. It also states that they hold the full option as to whether repair or replace. They would probably try and get away with repairing the crack in the frame. Your policy may be different.
  3. Silverback was an SA brand, but they moved to Germany a few years back. They are pretty big and right up with the best of them. I have no idea what the specs are on the bikes you are looking at, but it is common knowledge that Silverback offers much more bang for you buck. Rand for Rand, the Silverback will offer better quality parts
  4. It's the crank that is Alivio not the derailleur.
  5. Thanks for the offer, but I am in PE
  6. 1. Yes, narrow wide 2. The chain is on the smaller side. I should probably get a longer one as it is on the cusp of being too small 3. It can only be mounted on the outer plate. 4. There is a slight bend. 5. Not sure of the bb width. It is a square taper. I think I should just swallow my pride, accept defeat and take it to a bike shop.
  7. It's a NW 1x chain ring and therefore it can only be mounted on the outside (I put it on the inner part of the plate)
  8. It's the outer. The single ring cannot be mounted anywhere else on the crank (104 BCD)
  9. I am busy building up a bike. I used an Alivio 3 x Crankset and converted it to 1x. The problem is that the chainline is completely out. In a straight line, it sits somewhere on the 9th gear of a 10 speed cassette. The result is that the chain simply derails off the front chain ring as it moves up the cassette. I cannot think of anyway to fix it, other than replacing the crank. Before spending the money, are there any ideas to fix this?
  10. R9000 for Racing 5? Jeez, there was a time that you would get 2 sets of Racing 3 for that price plus some spare change for tyres. Cycling prices are killing us.
  11. Not sure if you were referring Coimbra in PE or if there is one in Cape St Francis too. Perhaps you could contact some bike shops in PE. It's about 40mins drive from where you are.
  12. It does cover second hand goods, but it only applys to traders. So an average person selling their private bike is not subject to the laws of the CPA
  13. Logic tells me it can be done, but sometimes cycling is not always logical. Can one mix any brand of caliper with any brand of lever? I understand that you cannot mix DOT and mineral oil brakes, but other than that, they should be compatible.
  14. They never disappeared, they just became less relavent. Only selling in very small numbers. They've had a very nice carbon full suspension on the market for some years. You don't see many around.
  15. Except for one unfriendly chap that I used to see almost daily, everyone here in PE always greets back on ride. Then again, we are the friendly city
  16. Seen this mentioned on other threads, but maybe deserves a thread of its own. Has Cool Heat put out a notice in SA for this and how are we affected.
  17. Those of you who have been with Bike Hub as long as I have, may remember the time, an ex-employee (disgruntled) of Volcan outed them on Bike Hub. They always claimed to be Swiss, however, he came on Bike Hub stating it was actually a South African brand. Not sure if he was telling the truth. Also, let's not forget, Team Biogen, once rode Volcan (Kevin Evans and David George) and so too did Andrew McLean. So they do have a good pedigree.
  18. I have a Volcan FS. The drop outs were worn and the wheel shifted causing it to rub on the chainstay. After phoning around, I could not find a single bike shop that distributed Volcan. I contacted Volcan directly, on the email address listed on their website. My numerous emails were simply ignored. I realise that distributors don't deal directly with the public, but surely they could have, at the very least, responded. Even if it was to tell me to bugger off or put me in touch with a dealer. My concern with Makro, is lack of technical knowledge. Anyone buying one of those bikes will have to take it to a bike shop to ensure it is assembled properly (my neighbour bought a bike from Makro and the fork was on backwards). Going back to my experience. What if the frame cracks. Will Volcan be able to back the client up? If a new frame is despatched, who will rebuild it?
  19. I remember when 29ers were just starting to hit the market. It was predicted that 29inch wheels would kill off the full suspension. Apparently, the bigger wheels gave a ride similar to 26 inch full suspension. It never happened, but hardtails are definately much better now than 15 years ago
  20. Years back, was hit by a car. The back of my head hitting the tarmac. The helmet saved my skull and probably my life. Left the broken helmet on the garage floor and our puppy chewed it. Unfortunately, they didn't honour the crash replacement. I guess they thought I was pulling a fast one.
  21. That would be pretty boring if that was the case. Things change, time changes, logos change. Not just for bikes, but for everything. Renault has just changed their logo, so too has Nissan. FNB has a new logo too.
  22. I suppose it would depend on the insurer, but every single claim I have ever had, the cash was paid to me (except for a geyser replacement) I am sure that if this is not the case, you can negotiate with the bike shop.
  23. Yes, Cool Heat Agencies. These are the ppl being discussed.
  24. Had a similar thing happen to me on a TV. Salesman told me 2 year warranty. On month 13, it gave problems. Took it back only to be told it was a 12 month warranty. I dug out my documents and sure enough, it was one year. The moral of the story, don't always take the salesman's word for it. Read the docs that came with the bike.
