Just received my warranty replacement Reacto 9000 frame. Its the 2022 Team Edition. Will post one or two pics soon.  Really nice frame

You posted this originally on 28 May. Is this how long they took to warranty replace your frame? . That is 7 months of waiting

Did they at least loan you something to use in the meantime?

Looks good. Always liked those old Volcans.

Have you checked that the back wheel doesnt hit the back of the seat tube when the rear shock fully compresses? It looks very close considering the wheel is gonna move up and forward as the suspension compresses.

Thanks..... No it doesn't hit the seat tube at all.

Its weird, I thought I was the only one doing the 27.5 conversion on these frames, but I have met 2 other ppl in the last few weeks that have also done it

Get A Bike Fit Or at Least Level that Saddle. Stem is also Determined by Bike Fit.

The saddle is an old cracked saddle off a Scott. I put it on temporarily just so I had something to sit on whilst checking the gears. I have another one which will be level when mounted.

I also need to set the seat post height properly too.

Already tested the stem length from my son's bike (80mm) and I'm comfortable with it.

  4. I just finished building my first full suspension.

Full carbon Volcan 26 inch frame with 27.5 wheels.

I struggled to find reasonably priced parts so ended up with a new 1x10 LTwoo groupset, which shifts smoother than the Shimano Alivio I have on my hardtail.

Rest was made up of parts I have gathered over the years. All I need now is a shorter stem and a wider bar.

  5. Very difficult to answer this one. It would depend on many things.

It would depend on the terms of your policy and of course the insurance company that you are with.

Some companies will look for any reason not to pay and others will help.

For example, my policy specifically excludes cosmetic damage, so they probably won't cover the scratches on the groupset. It also states that they hold the full option as to whether repair or replace. They would probably try and get away with repairing the crack in the frame.

    Your policy may be different.

If you're in Gauteng I will be able to help in getting it sorted. My guess is that the BB is too long and will be quite simple to swop and bring into alignment. Those square tapered BBs are very cheap.

Thanks for the offer, but I am in PE

Please ignore stupid or obvious comments and use the better ones :D

    1) Are you using a NW ring? This may explain why it drops (can be a stupid comment)

    2) Is the chain the correct length (again, this can be idiotic)

    3) As per NC you can use the middle or outer ring position but if the chain drops then moving the ring won't help much, you'll still get some grinding closer to the top.

    4) Are the crank arms straight or do they have a natural bend in the arms around the middle. If straight you won't have much to play with in point 5

    5) What's the width of the BB you have installed? You will notice that the BB is most likely a 118 or longer to accommodate the 3x. It is possible for you to get a shorter BB which will eliminate the issue. But, you may need to check play with some options or post some kiekies

    1. Yes, narrow wide

    2. The chain is on the smaller side. I should probably get a longer one as it is on the cusp of being too small

    3. It can only be mounted on the outer plate.

    4. There is a slight bend.

    5. Not sure of the bb width. It is a square taper.

I think I should just swallow my pride, accept defeat and take it to a bike shop.

Which chainring are you using, outer or middle? With a 3x you should have some options.

It's a NW 1x chain ring and therefore it can only be mounted on the outside (I put it on the inner part of the plate)

  9. I am busy building up a bike. I used an Alivio 3 x Crankset and converted it to 1x.

The problem is that the chainline is completely out. In a straight line, it sits somewhere on the 9th gear of a 10 speed cassette. The result is that the chain simply derails off the front chain ring as it moves up the cassette.

I cannot think of anyway to fix it, other than replacing the crank.

Before spending the money, are there any ideas to fix this?

Which DT Swiss wheels are you referring to?

Fulcrum wheels tend to be very good value for money to buy.

The main difference is that many Fulcrum (and Mavic, Shimano, Campy) wheels use proprietary parts, making repairs and servicing potentially difficult in a few years.

The rims, hubs and spokes that DT Swiss uses are much more "standard", meaning you can get parts like replacement rims, spokes and nipples anywhere, anytime.

    Here are the Fulcrum specs:
    https://www.fulcrumwheels.com/en/wheels/road-bike-wheels/racing-5

South African retail price is about R9000 for a set of Racing 5's, if you can find stock.

    Approx 1650g for the set.

At the moment you can't buy new factory-built DT Swiss alloy rim-brake road wheels in SA as nobody has imported any.

You could have a set built by someone like myself.

    - DT 350 hub set: R7500

    - DT RR411 rims: R2250 each

    - Bladed Spokes & brass nipples: R1800

    - Labour: R750 per wheel

Total: R15 300 excluding delivery. Approx 1500g for the set.

(Add R10k and you can get an incredible set of carbon aero wheels)

The DT Swiss set, while being hand-built and lighter, also uses widely available spokes and nipples, in common lengths, and can be serviced by any decent bike shop.

R9000 for Racing 5? Jeez, there was a time that you would get 2 sets of Racing 3 for that price plus some spare change for tyres.

    Cycling prices are killing us.

  11. Logic tells me it can be done, but sometimes cycling is not always logical.

Can one mix any brand of caliper with any brand of lever?

I understand that you cannot mix DOT and mineral oil brakes, but other than that, they should be compatible.

I remember quite a bit of marketing behind Volcan, and obviously the lab have a lot of influence with consumers so they did sell. The swiss reference was always a straight face lie.

Just disappeared though, wonder who is actually behind this revival now as it's obviously aimed at a different segment?

Walmart itself probably sells a gazillion bikes per annum and the grandsons are big into mtb. They bought rapha and have a boutique brand as well as built hundreds of km of trail in their home town.

They never disappeared, they just became less relavent. Only selling in very small numbers. They've had a very nice carbon full suspension on the market for some years. You don't see many around.

  13. Those of you who have been with Bike Hub as long as I have, may remember the time, an ex-employee (disgruntled) of Volcan outed them on Bike Hub.

They always claimed to be Swiss, however, he came on Bike Hub stating it was actually a South African brand. Not sure if he was telling the truth.

Also, let's not forget, Team Biogen, once rode Volcan (Kevin Evans and David George) and so too did Andrew McLean. So they do have a good pedigree.

The Nissan logo is much the same as it was in 1930's. FNB and Jan Smuts airport 😂. Iconic/ Legendary  companies with a rich and proud heritage like Ferrari, Lambo, Campy and many others are decades old and in no way boring.

Celibate achievements by adding a gold livery for that year or SA color stripe through the logo. Many ways to celebrate a milestone and still keep your identity and be proud of your roots.

The Nissan logo has changed quite a bit

  15. I have a Volcan FS. The drop outs were worn and the wheel shifted causing it to rub on the chainstay. After phoning around, I could not find a single bike shop that distributed Volcan.

I contacted Volcan directly, on the email address listed on their website. My numerous emails were simply ignored.

I realise that distributors don't deal directly with the public, but surely they could have, at the very least, responded. Even if it was to tell me to bugger off or put me in touch with a dealer.

My concern with Makro, is lack of technical knowledge. Anyone buying one of those bikes will have to take it to a bike shop to ensure it is assembled properly (my neighbour bought a bike from Makro and the fork was on backwards).

Going back to my experience. What if the frame cracks. Will Volcan be able to back the client up? If a new frame is despatched, who will rebuild it?
