  1. Is that a rhetorical question?
  2. Didn't BigH go to Canada? No wait - that was Aliwal North.
  3. Actually got a PM from him this morning. He's in SA for a few weeks from Canada. I'll point him to this thread.
  4. I know ...
  5. I was confronted with two choices - prosthetic elbow with full use or reconstructive surgery and limited use. I opted for the latter because a prosthetic elbow has a shelf life.
  6. In my case I don't have to act.
  7. Wishing the injured rider a rapid and full recovery. It was on Easter Monday in 2006 that I broke my elbow in three places doing Mamba. Four operations later that same year, and I still carry the emotional scars and have a gammy elbow.
  8. Do you get to the top of Dorstberg on that machine? Huge respect if you do. I can hardly do it in granny gear.
  9. Have to agree with the last few posts. My wife and I did the first one two years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and the luxury of staying in the hotel. A great weekend and worth the money spent. Would I do it again? No. Better value to be had elsewhere.
  10. Indeed. Target market as a subset of the whole market.
  11. Canned hunt gone wrong? That's sad.
  12. I'll be giving the 63km a try. Thanks for the warning about the river crossing ... will have to put my Continuous Glucose Monitor into a waterproof pouch.
  13. Hoogekraal X 3. Lastminutedotcom training for Sani ...
  14. Seems our replies crossed on the interwebs ...
  15. I echo what others have said, but will add that there are one or two A-frame wooden bridges which can be intimidating for a beginner, so rather dismount if unsure and walk them. Remember you need a bit of momentum (not reckless speed!) and an easy gear to get over the bridges confidently. A very special place to cycle.
  16. Insurance. Expensive when you pay the premiums. Cheap when you need it. Just make sure you read and understand the small print, e.g. exclusions, technical specs, conditions, etc.
  17. I thought that in sport the only colours that count are gold, silver and bronze. Seems I'm mistaken.
  18. Indeed. Bit like eeny, meeny, miny, moe. To answer the OP, intervals twice a week (one day rest in between - maybe tempo) and LSD (4 -5 hours) on either Sat and/or Sun. This is what I'm doing at the moment, as I'm also way behind: Mon REST Tue Intervals (4 X 4 mins at max effort for full interval. Try reach LT for as long as possible.) Wed Tempo or Recovery Thu Intervals (6 X 2 mins at max effort for full interval. Try reach LT for as long as possible) Fri REST Sat LSD (5 hours) Sun Tempo or Climbing
  19. Don't underestimate the value of a brand, and the amount of money that goes into creating that value. Large companies with high brand value on balance sheet and based on customer loyalty, will go to any extreme to protect their brand. And small opportunists will do anything to position their brands close to the bigger and better known brands. Bicycles, sports clothes, FMCG, fast food, etc.. Think of the recent debacle in South Africa with the Polo (clothing) brand. Bet you that a few consumers felt short-changed that their beloved Polo shirt was actually made in SA and wasn't from the beloved Ralph Lauren stable.
  20. I was just taking a meander down memory lane with the Vrystaat/Cheetahs. Off the top of my head (forgive spelling): Klippies Kritzenger, Wouter Hugo, Gerrie Germishuys, Edrich Krantz, Barry Wolmarans, De Wet Ras, Eben Jansen, Gysie Pienaar, Theuns Stoffberg, Vleis Visagie, Ros van Reenen, Helgaard Muller, Andre Bester, Piet Bester, Lourens Steyger, Pieter Muller, Brendan Venter, Pieter de Haas, Lourens Prinsloo, Eben Scheepers, Chris Badenhorst, Andre Joubert, Henry Honiball, Danie Anthony, Jannie Els, Frikkie Botha, Stompie Fourie, Thabu Thomas, Andre Greyling, Heinrich Fuls (maybe Transvaal?), Ruben Kruger, Naka Drotske, Andre Venter, Ryno Opperman, .... my memory failing me now.
  21. Welcome to my world. It's been tough as a Vrystaat/Cheetahs supporter since the 1970"s. But loyal always.
  22. Well, 'Dale, you and I both at the bottom of the log. My Cheetahs really were poor not to win against the Chiefs. But the Stormers? My previous comments stand now more than ever. Time for renewal. Hopefully Smal brings something new to the party. But mid-season? Tall order!! The way refs are now blowing the breakdown, in field TMO decisions, and the chip into space more recently, all lend themselves to more of an attacking game plan with a rush defence. The Stormers game plan has become stale - injuries or not.
  23. Race? Correct. Trail? Incorrect. That actually describes the Adventure. Trail is about new entrants who haven't yet worked out if they want to race or cruise, or have no choice and find themselves in the same event. Adventure? See Trail.
  24. Firstly, condolences to Lee's wife and family. I can't begin to imagine the grief they are experiencing, especially with Lee's wife pregnant with their unborn baby. Regarding the land access comment, I do have a difference of opinion. I don't believe we should confuse land access with liability. If I'm not mistaken, when you sign up as a TMTB member you indemnify the club against any claims for damages of any nature. Similarly, the club would indemnify the land owner against similar claims. The sport of mountain biking, whether recreational or competitive, has inherent risks which could result in injuries, possible hospitalisation, disability or under rare or freak circumstances even death on the trails. The honesty box might have some problems though. Point is, it will be extremely difficult to apportion liability or fault with the club and/or land owners when riders suffer damages and/or injuries. In the case of the deceased in this thread, one could argue that his passing away was a consequential event. Based on my limited legal knowledge, consequential damages are extremely difficult to claim and prove. I think it is merely sensational journalism. It would be a complete article if we knew more about what causes blood clots and why that happened after physiotherapy. Perhaps I'm mistaken?
  25. It just seems one cannot leave a bike on a rack anymore, even if it's locked. I'm insured with CycleSure and they specifically state that bikes must be locked with an approved lock and cable, otherwise no cover. How one would prove the latter if bikes are stolen I wouldn't know, other than to take a few snaps with your mobile every time you leave your bike locked on a rack in a public place.
