  11. I see that Silverback made a top-10 honourable mention for one of their fat bikes. Seems like Silverback has done really well at Eurobike this year... What is the feeling about fatbikes in SA? I would love to ride one of these beasts in the dunes.
  12. Searched a bit here and google, but can't seem to find an answer. I have been playing around with different pressures to see what works best for me, on the front 1.8 bar feels best, however since dropping from 2 bar a creak has developed on the wheel, like when you squeeze spokes to check tension and they creak. Whats weird is that when I raise the pressure back to 2 bar the creak disappears, drop it to 1.8 bar and its back. Do the spokes need to be tensioned more at lower pressures? Does the pressure in the tyre add to the stiffness of the wheel? 14. Pretoria Croup Rides I had some success personally in another thread meeting some riders in the Pretoria area to go Mountain Biking with. Therefore I'd like to start a new thread for Pretoria MTB riders to post their needs for riding partners. Weather it be Morning Rides, Night Rides, Weekend Rides post it here together with some of your requirements use the list belof as guidance. 1. Starting area 2. Staring time 3. Intended route description. 4. Riding distance 5. Pace 6. Also state if you are in it for fun or if you want to do serious training Mountain biking takes us to places we rarely get to see otherwise and sometimes to remote places where there is nobody around. Mountain Biking is also more enjoyable with others. Riding in numbers ensures safety, you learn new routes and areas and you may even pick up some skills. Post your next ride in this thread and ask someone to join. Always have fun no matter what!!!
  15. Hi, I would like to know if anybody on the Hub has gone through the process of trying to get some sort of sponsorship? Or if anybody has any tips in this regard? I started racing again earlier this year but I have now reached the cross road where my training has to increase drastically to try and catch the guys at the front. This in turn means that all of my maintenance cost will also become increasingly costly, thus the need for some kind of support. Any help or advice with this matter would be awesome!
  16. Just to start of, I normally not the kind of guy that would moan about a race but alas.... A friend and I decided to go ride at Northern Farms today and stumbled onto a "organized" race. We decided to find out what the race cost and the distances involved, a STAGGERING R235 for 45km!!!! I enjoy the MTN and Trailseeker series, thus paying R235 for it which is in the same price category as Dullstroom, Hakahana, Van Gaalens and Cullinun with well planned out routes, excellent water points, great goodie bags en some nice scenery, seems unreasonable. Finally, against our better judgment, we decided to try the 45km which is basically the normal route with the only exception being some gravel and rocks they placed over muddy areas for easy riding. There were 2 water points with literally only water and not even a medal when we finished. Understanding that we started late seeing that the 45km already started when we signed up so a medal was just optional... NOW, In my mind I'm trying to justify the amount of money that we spend on this race and what was on offer and I can't think of anything. I would pay NO MORE than R100 for the race and that is even being generous. Did a large chunk of the entry go to charity??? I have signed up for 10km running races that cost R40 with more on offer. Is there anybody out there that feels the same? Can one of the race organizers come back to me to justify these costs?
  17. A revamped course and a superb weather forecast will see a massive field descend upon Eston Club in KwaZulu-Natal’s Midlands this Sunday for one of the province’s biggest one-day mountain bike races, the Illovo Eston MTB Challenge. Click here to view the article
  18. Being new to MTB and entering my first winter rides, not quite sure about this so putting it out here for some guidance.. I read somewhere (think a US mtb forum) that one should wait 24 hours for every inch of rainfall before heading back to the trails as not to cause damage to them. Is there any truth to this? I assume to some degree there is as the trails turn to mud that will then have tracks left in them after the ride and when dried be ruts of sorts, but isn't that the nature of the sport. Again, not entirely sure, so was just wondering as here in CPT it has been raining a lot for a few days and want to head for a ride later...
  19. Hi all (women as well), I am embarking on a personal website called Race Calendar. I will be targeting multiple types of events like MTB, road cycling, trail running, road running, swimming etc. I want to start with MTB. There are so many MTB events across South Africa and they each have their own website. The reason why I started this website is because I want to have a centralised website/database where you can view all of these events across the country. I want to display event information in a neat and readable way instead of having race details all over the place that are not consistent. I also want to display accommodation in and around the event. I always struggle to find accommodation when travelling to far away races and it would be easier if I could find accommodation close the event instead of having to go and view multiple accommodation websites.. I also want to display things to do in and around the venue for those that are going to sleep over and don't want to sit and watch TV. I want to have detailed route information and profiles. User comments after the race which can be forwarded to the event organisers. Pics of the race, Youtube videos of the routes, directions to the race, weather etc etc. The site has been optimised to use the latest internet technologies. It is also optimsed for mobile devices because most people are all day on their phones. It's just a personal project and website. There might be similar sites but like I said it's a personal project that I am doing in my spare time and for my own enjoyment. If you have any ideas it would be appreciated. What would you like to see about an event before entering? Do you guys think something like this will work? The site is very bare at the moment, I put on content as soon as when I have time. Go to www.race-calendar.co.za to see what I am trying to do and achieve. I have a Facebook page and Twitter account registered. If you want to please follow me on Facebook or/and Twitter. I will starting posting as soon as when I have some more content. Maybe share the site with your other MTB buddies and adventure seeking buddies. Help spread the word. I would appreciate your feedback. I am getting a lot of hits coming from The Hub SA but no one is liking. I can understand it is probably because there isn't much information on yet. Please follow and I will notify you guys on changes. The website is dedicated to all mountain bikers, INCLUDING women. Thanks Brendan
  20. Hi all I am relocating from the Southern Suburbs to Somerset West end of August. Any group rides in the mornings? Preferably MTB but I can join a road group. Fitness level is reasonably good. If any, how many times a week and weekends? I would prefer twice or three times a week and one long ride on a weekend. Thanks
  21. It is in the pivot area between the rear shock linkage and the seat stay. Should I be worried?
  22. I'm a lady rider looking to upgrade from my 26" Raleigh Nomad to something better as I ride a lot more now. I've seen a new 2014 Merida Juliet 500W, and a second hand 2013 Merida Matts Lite XT-edition both within my budget. I'm looking to spend max R13K on a hardtail, 26er or 650B. I'm only 154cm so would like something relatively light and compact (15" frame). I do a lot of single track riding. Any advice on whether I should go new or secondhand, and if there are other models I should consider would be appreciated.
  23. This years Illovo Eston MTB Challenge will see the 18km fun riders being taken on a wild ride as they traverse through Estons Tala Game Reserve. For more on the event, see the link bellow: http://www.gameplanmedia.co.za/estonmtb/eston1402.html
