  1. Hi All, I've got a bit of an issue regarding my newly acquired S/S, long story , so I was looking at swopping it for this bike. 3. Hi Guys I'm upgrading to a 29er and have been given a price of R17,819 for a NEW specialized Stumpjumper HT Comp 2014. Retail roughly R21,000, from what i can find online The bike is light (roughly 10.7Kg, no pedals - current bike is 14.5Kg) Goupset is mix of Sram X9 & X7 Just wanted to check if this sounds like a good deal & if anybody that has a Stumpjumper, what their reviews are? Also purchasing the specialized 2013 PRO MTB shoes R2300
  4. The right shifter (SRAM FORCE 10 speed) broke off. Can this be repaired? See photo's
  5. Hi guys, I have a mate in the office that is looking to get into cycling on the tar and he has a budget of R7,000 maximum. Any idea what brand/and or make has the best on offer for this low price range. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that the bike is going to be anything but light, but he can get carbon upgrades in the future. Something with a good groupset and bike design. Can be either Sram or Shimano doesn't matter. Any ideas?
  6. Need to replace entire drivetrain on x0 38 24 2x10 - have everything except 24 truvativ chainring , can I use a new shimano xt 24 that I have lying around. In other words this would mean a truvativ 38, shimano 24 chainrings with sram 1090 chain and 1070 casette. Is it worth it to purchase a new 24 truvativ chainring for compatibility ?
  7. The first thing I would like to say is thanks to all who have supported my efforts in getting my blood sugar under control. You all know who you are. My bike Giant Anthem X 29er, Giant wheels and cross something tyres, Fox RP23 Rear Shock, All XT components except for the XTR rear der, brakes G2 cleansweep discs with Sram XX World Cup, Ritchey Carbon Riser bar, A Ritchey 110mm stem Ritchey Carbon layback Seatpost, Specialized saddle (Henge 143mm) and a Rock Shox SID XX 29er tapered 15mm through axle and a Specialized helmet. And before I forget my old weight lifting gloves. So the ride started well. Out the house HR 75 BPM down the road going like a bat out of hell pulled the 185 XX World cup brake on and thought I was going over the bars. Thankfully I did not. First lesson the brakes are good. Started the first climb not big but heart rate now up to 135 little out of breath but doing well. Gear not sounding so good as I tried to push up the hill a friend riding with me told me small front and small back gear selection not good and large front and large back gears crossing over also not a good thing to do. Second lesson dont cross your gears. Ok been out for about 25 min heart rate at 145 and now starting a long climb up to the top of the village. Stopped 3 time on the way up HR 175 out of breath friend riding with me looks like he is falling asleep told him to check the route ahead, cars going past me people laughing but hey I am having a great time. Lesson three the hill is bigger than I thought. Ok so we are at the top of the village and Eugene said were does this dirt track go to? (Should have said I don’t know) I realised then I was in trouble but as us men do I plucked up my remaining testosterone and said my son said it’s a great way back home he used it many a time on the 4 wheeler lets go back home that route. Fourth lesson don’t think with your nuts and don’t listen to your son’s advice. After getting 90% of the way up kill e man jaro Eugene who has by now been up and down about ten times said he went right at the top and once again my nuts started to think for me and out my mouth came the words you should have gone left (oh why did I speak) Lesson five keep my big mouth shut. Right he says lets go. That is where the wheels fell off. I was in the lowest gear and I was told to take it easy so I pushed like hell it was up hill remember, there I popped my first wheelie and the next thing I felt was my head hitting the ground and I remember looking at Eugene who was on the floor laughing. I was ok but my pride had a dent. Lesson six listen to advice. Ok so off we go again finally I reached the top HR 175 and climbing it was about now I remembered the doctors words ringing in my ears do not go above 110 HR and walk as exercise. We are now at the top looking down across a dirt track between the fields and I can see all the these flashing colours in my eyes and my legs are shaking. Lesson seven always take the advice of your doctor. There is a big discussion about the technical route it went something like which way I said thinking with my nuts the steepest and fastest. Oh boy was that a mistake and it’s starting to go dark. Off we go Eugene in front and me catching him at a rate that can only be described as suicidal the bumps are causing me to see double and me thinking these monstrous brakes if I pull them they will send me flying so what do I do as Eugene takes a left turn I call him a sadistic AH and go off I go into the freshly dug sugar cane. I have never been so happy the dirt just brought me to a grinding halt my HR is off the scale plus the sweat is burning my eye so I cannot see. Lesson eight a mixture of lessons four and five. Still only 1/3 of the way down and I am thinking what now walk or cry well let me tell you this is where I moved into top gear, the thought process was at its peak I was again using my nuts as my brain and because I thought my son loved me and he though his route was great and I thought that I should stick with it and the thought of my dear wife who was sitting at home having a beer my mouth got the better of me and well I said lets race to the bottom and off we went. It was clear from the start my 60 minutes experience of mountain biking was all coming together the suspension going downhill was set at hard the hand eye coordination with the brakes was in tune and just because I could not see in the dark hell what could go wrong. I have lost all feeling in my bum Eugene is now at warp 9 I am close on his tail and thinking am I insured enough. It was then I though suspension should be set as soft!!!! Suddenly out the dark I hear Eugene shout watch out its soft!!!! WTF is he going on about I thought then another command ringing out go left WTF !!! is he on about. Out of the darkness I see a wall of thick bush approaching me at speed and Eugene going off to my left so this time no choice I go left. It was about then I though what was he going on about soft!!! This is the same time I saw this sand approaching my head the front wheel slipping gently away. Lucky for me no damage except once again Eugene is on the floor laughing. Lesson nine brakes are good, don’t cross your gears, hills are bigger than you think, don’t think with your nuts and don’t listen to your sons advice, keep my big mouth shut, listen to advice, always take the advice of your doctor, mixture of lesson four and five. So I make it home in one piece and my bike is fantastic had the best hour and a bits worth of enjoyment I have had in a long time. Lesson ten Get yourself a bike All in all a great ride and I will be doing many more. orsum
  8. Hi can anyone help please, CWC and my local bike shops don't have any stock, where can I find a Sram XX 11-36 Cassette? It is pretty urgent. Thank you

  10. Right so the frame confusion has been resolved and i know what im getting finally so will be paying for it shortly and it will arrive sparkly and clean as my Xmas present to myself. BUT now the issue is PARTS! What to use. I have the following parts available: Brand new 2012 Shimano Saint 9spd cranks (with no ring so can easily make them 10spd) Brand new 2012 Shimano Saint 9spd shifter and derailleur (not the clutch one) Brand new 2012 Shimano Saint Brakes (the older shape not the new short lever) http://www.sicklines.com/news-images/shimano_saint_m810_grouppo.jpg Brand new 2014 SRAM X0 DH specific clutch derailleur, shifter, chain and cassette http://www.tbsbikeparts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/sram-xo-group-set.jpg Then Used 2011 Truvativ Descendant GXP cranks Used 2013 Shimano XT brakes (the new shape ones) http://www.ridemorebikes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/truvativ-descendant-cranks-clear-taped-skin.jpg http://www.wigglestatic.com/images/shimano-m785-disc-brakes-zoom.jpg So i am now wondering what to put on the new bike Although the Saints are old I like the cranks - but i need to weigh them compared to the Descendants. But the Descendants have done 3 years of work, so maybe the saints are better even though they are old?? Then the 9spd vs 10spd issue - i would like the clutch and the X0 groupset, but the saint feel amazing even though its not a clutch rear mech. Then the brakes? I could just use the Saints even though they are the old shape as i know they work really well, But i currently use the new shape XTs and they are awesome. So either - just use the old shape saints OR Sell the saints (already have an interested party) then buy new saints and transfer the XTs onto my Trail bike??? Hmmmmmm Your guys thoughts??? I am leaning towards X0 Groupset with Saint Cranks and 10spd ring, with new Saint Brakes (if i can get them without having to put in any extra cash)
  11. When SRAM first introduced the XX1 it was met with scepticism. But what was first looked at as weird has turned out to work, so well that SRAM has decided to expand on that idea and offer the 1x11 drivetrain in cheaper X0 form. Click here to view the article
  12. Hi guys. I've decided to try and help a friend sell his bike, but I'm not sure what it's worth. Can anyone give me some pointers? It's a Token full carbon 29er - Large. Complete XX SRAM groupset 2x10 gears Rock Shox Reba fork (not sure model or travel) ZTR Crest Rims Maxxis tubeless tyres (I think its Crossmarks) Pedals removed - buyer can put new ones on. The bike is in pristine condition with low mileage. The owner doesn't like the hobby any more (can you believe it!). I wish I could afford buying this bike now. It's light and very well looked after. Instead I'll try find a buyer for him. He wants R16k for it. Is that a reasonable expectation? Sorry for the poor quality WhatsApp pics. I can upload decent ones in a few days.
  13. Afternoon all. I own a Garmin Edge 705 and saw this little piece that really loks like it could work. http://www.sram.com/sram/mountain/products/sram-quickview-adaptor-computer-mount My Question is if you think this will work with K-Edge or KCNC mounts?? Reason is that srams own mount sits very high compared to the above mentioned. Thanks Francois
  14. I am currently using a 2x10 and have been toying with the idea of changing to the SRAM 1x11 as the new XO1 is somewhat more within my price range! The question I have to you guys that have been riding the 1x11 is what size chain ring are you using? I ask this because the XX! spider allow a range of chain rings from a 36 all the way down to a 28. The XO1 has a different spider and the smallest that can be fitted is a 30. Is 30 small enough on a 29 for South Africa terrain?? The SRAM guys comment that we here do not need the 28, and in fact most people are using a 32 or 34. I am not a Pro so would appreciate feedback from "normal" guys!! .
  15. On my new bike there seems to be a bit of an issue when running the chain on the smallest cog at the back (11T). Occasionally the chain will catch and act as though it wants to shift (hops about). I have taken the same cog from another (pretty new) cassette and it does the same. And if you backpedal the chain skips and jumps around and feels as though it wants to catch on the next gear (this only happens when on the 11T cog). I see the only difference on this cassette compared to my old one is that there is a very thin washer/spacer that fits onto the lock ring. Should I take this off? Is this now 'forcing' the 11T cog tight up against its neighbour and could this be causing the catching effect? Neither my SRAM cassette nor my Deore cassette had this space on the lockring and I am not sure where its supposed to go? The bike is new with only 100km on it so I cant see it being related to wear and it only happens on the small cog, all the others are 100% when shifting and when under load.

  17. Okay i know it sounds stupid but i have an old steel TREK 470 road bike that i use on my IDT I want to fit my old 9 speed Chorus groupset to it but use flat handle bars instead of drops. If i use SRAM 9 speed MTB shifters, will their be a problem with the actuation ratio on the gear changing.
  18. I'm currently running a 3 by 10 setup, but thinking of converting my mtb to a 1 by 10 or if needed 2 by 10 drivetrain. I like the idea of 1 by 10 more as it is simple and will cost way less. Im not the best climber (average), so I am a bit apprehensive. If I convert, I will probably be running a 34T chainring up front with a 11-36 cassette. Using a SRAM X9 type 2 rear dr and will get a chainguide if needed. I live in Bloemfontein, so no real mountains, but I would like to do longer rides (80 - 100km) and would also like to be ale to do races in Natal and Nelspruit area now and then as well as some stage races. Will I be running out of gears or will a change of chainring (maybe a 32T or 30T) if I know that im going to be climbing more sort out this problem? Does anybody have any experience with this setup? any comment would be helpful.
  19. On my road bike I've got a FSA Compact crank, SRAM red 10 spd Cassette, Shimano Ultegra jockey, derailleur, levers and Shimano HG chain. For some reason the chain makes a "louder than normal" noise like a RRRRRRRRRR instead of a whirrrrr (kind of like if the chain was rubbing on a sprocket like when you ride with a extreme cross chain) when in certain sprocket selections (Usually when on the 2 or 3 sprockets towards the center of the cassette). Other than this the gears work perfectly, no slipping and gear changes first time in both directions. As the cassette gearing option I have is not available from shimano I want to stick with the SRAM cassette but replace the shimano chain with a SRAM chain in the hope that the 2 SRAMS might work a bit quieter together. So the question is: Is a SRAM 10spd chain and shimano Utegra jockey 100% compatible? Personally I don't see why not but want to make sure before I order a new chain
  20. Hi I have been looking at bikes for several weeks and have narrowed it down to 3 bikes. Momsen 329 (new) Silverback Vida 1 (used) Corratec Superbow Fun (New) All 3 have similar components. SRAM 5x/7x or Shimano Deore/SLX. I did not look at the wheels or shocks. Prices are between R8k and R10k. I have seen good reviews for the Silverback, but could not find any for the Corratec. Which one would you buy?
  21. I've just reassembled my carbon hardtail after a respray and it's now making a ticking noise (once or twice per pedal revolution). It only does this under load and it's not the saddle or seatpost as it does it when I'm out of the saddle as well. I've checked the bb and crank bolt (Sram X7) to make sure they're tight and greased all threads before assembling. What else could it be?
  22. Frans Grotepass, riding his BOOTH 650b raced to the podium in the half marathon at the SA Champs today at Hazyview. Frans races an all carbon BOOTH 650b with SRAM XX1 groupset, XX brakes, SID XX fork, ZTR Medallist wheels with Rocket Ron TL ready tyres. Bike weighs in at 8.31kg in race trim. Well done Frans!

  24. Hi all, I know this has been asked a million times but since a lot of the 2014 models are coming out this might be useful info for others as well. I am looking at getting a new mountain bike and after a lot of investigation I decided to go for a 29" or maybe a 27.5". My budget is <R10k and I had the following models in mind: 2014 Merida Big 7 300 2014 Merida Big Nine 300 2014 Titan 29er Comp 2014 Momsen AL229 The Titan has a Rock Shox XC32 Silver Solo Air Fork and the Momsen a Suntour SR XCR AIR HLO 100. The Merida's either mention the SR 29 XCM HLO 100 or the RST F1rst Air not sure which one they have. Momsen has SRAM X5 Derailleurs while the others have Shimano SLX / M390. Tektro HDC 300/301 brakes except for the Titan with Shimano M430 brakes. What do you think?
  25. Ok, so not as bad as the heading makes it out to be. I'm talking about the 6.8kg legal weight of a bike The guys at Black Spade will be running a special soon. Aero frame, carbon 24mm wide super lite wheels and SRAM RED 22 groupset with Ritchey finishing parts. Looks like will be 6.18g once complete They only going to do 10, because the price will be crazy...be on the look out... Think back to the Raleigh,Zipp deal from a few years back Don't miss your chance to be bad and ride illegal bike, I've booked one, so only 9 left....
