WTF studies the route ? Where do you get the route to study anyway ?

Who studies the route?

Everyone including you should!

Question should be who does not study the route!?

Where do you get it?

Which route to you want? And what format do you want it in gpx tcx mapmyride garminconnect?

Routes are also on the organizers website. They normally give a clear description at least otherwise how would we know where to ride?

Always own up - whether you're first or last!!! Integrity is one of the greatest personality traits a person can have. Ask any golfer.

So you are racing along. Get to the finish in the top 3 - either catagory or overall. But you realise that you did not do the full race distance - lets say the marshall sent you the wrong way so by NO fault of your own you "cheated". Whould you do the right thing and own up?

Would you still do it if you were in 100th position?

Yes. I did just that at the Walkerville MTB race last year, had some mech difficulties and did shorter route, went straight to Richard Durrant and told him I needed a DQ as I'd not covered the distance.

Mind you I came second at the Magalies Monster in 2008 but had got lost on course, I was mightily pissed that I was DQ'd but read the rule book and saw it was my problem as the rules state that if you off piste, it's DQ straight away. Felt like a tosser for being angry at the time. DOH!!

@Tankman: what if the comm confesses before the start that some of the route markers got wet, and some got lost. No matter how well you study the route, if the marker aint there, it aint there.

(On a lighter note: Men get lost on the road in their cars and now you want them to study an offroad map of a mtb route BEFORE the race??? ;) )

PS in road cycling it is considered quite OK to cheat if you don't get caught. All the pros - I mean ALL of them do it. They even do it when TV cameras are on them. Then they expect us to believe that they don't dope. Ha. Whatever.

I'm gonna go twit at Tiger now, and get his views on that.

Thought we were talking road here. Hopefully the South Easter doesnt blow any street signs or intersections away

I hear you, mtbing and routing is bit more difficult ... but that "back to Start" function on the gps does come in handy when you get lost! ;)

Nuff said, I'm off to save the planet.

Good luck with your dilemma.

Captain Plant - that you? Good luck with your dilemma.

Another spin... You are in 100th place 45mins up on your "usual time" = better seeding, better starting group (possibly less congestion) in the next race. *note: not applicable to who is normally near the podium.

SO why do people say; no - who cares. This will result in an unfair (possible) advantage..... You may be the next guy infront of the guy on the single track, racing for a top ten and allow competitors to catch and tail him....

Me thinks if you steal, you steal. Good luck MJ - hope "the guy" you "are referring to" does not slow you down in the next race.....

Yes for podium/ top 10 / prize money etc

100th postion wouldnt bother

Anyway without exception so far everytime I have either been sent or gone the wrong way I have ended up doing more distance :(

Maybe I could apply for time credits ;) could even make the top 100 :D

I have an amateur mate that rode the recent Tour de Boland in Cat 1. He was quite shocked at the amount of blatant cheating that took place.

I should ? Why would I want to study the route ? This sounds like road riding to me ! SO why don't we go and race every weekend at the same spot and then we know where we going and what to expect . Whooooooo can't wait . We ride where the road takes us and where the marshal points us to , if he not there cause he had to go and take a crap then we get lost and arrive several hours later . Big deal we had fun . :)

it happened to me once on a fun ride (25km), a few of us got lost ended up at the top of this huge hill and we could see where we needed to be so found the quickest way down. I ended up with 24.something on the odometer and came in 2nd and informed the marshal that there was a mistake and we missed a section of the route. he put a little asterix against my name but when it came to prize giving i was called up for second place and scored R400. its not my fault they are dof.
