I fail to understand why anybody would want to ride a SS in the first place never mind race one .

I ask the same question RE the Epic. And I can only come up with one answer "because they can".

I dont know about this year, but a few years ago tow guys did it on fully ridgid Single Speeds.

Because its not hard enough on a dual suspension 29'er with 30 gears...

All the epics, pre 2010, EASY, so no problem finishing on SSR as most of the routes were district roads ;) 2010 Epic has been the toughest of all of them, as it only had one rest day (1 x time trial) and a similar route to this year. 2011 Epic on the other hand had two rest days (prologue + tt), so not as tough as last year, but close :D

Hat, coat and I'm out of here...

There have been many SS at Epic, the hottest of them all was the dude with the Independent Fabrication's frame, what a bike.

The most colorful character has to be the rasta tandem man from the first epic.

In 2007 myself (South African) and my my mate Chris from the USA did the race on steel rigid singlespeeds. I believe this year William from William's Bike shop and a mate are doing it on singlespeeds.

Cheers,

Shaun.

Correct. William and partner rode a ss this year and clocked some rather respectable times.

Will post some results when in the office, as replying via this silly little cell phone is not the best.
