To be honest I think putting up signs may create some form of awareness but this will not prevent cyclists from being killed. The problem here is a general growing trend in South Africa where motorists don't give a damn about the law and do whatever they please. This is not going to improve until we get decent law enforcement in this country. For the mess we currently have you can blame our wonderful government who in my opinion are responsible for creating an environment of lawlessness. We are the unwilling beneficiaries of what they sowed prior to 1994 and have failed to subsequently address and bring under control

Phew, I dont go along there often but whenever I do its packed with cars and trucks on both roads and both lanes (Swartkoppies and Klipriver) plus at 5.30pm its starting to get a bit darker now which would make it even more dangerous.

I know somebody posted here that alledgedly a truck jumped the lights, but I havent seen any thing official in any newscast or paper yet.

Very unfortunate indeed, but as winter draws in and it gets darker quicker we are going to have to be more vigilant, its not about who is right or who is wrong, its about going home.

I fail to understand why the lack of policing is always mentioned. WE ARE ADULTS AND SHOULD BEHAVE ACCORDINGLY AND STOP BLAMING THE GOVERNMENT.

The country has not changed because of the new Black Government. It has changed because so-called educated people just don't give a damn anymore!!

Why must police authorities baby sit us?

I will accept flaming!!

True, to some effect.

But no policing brings unroadworthy vehicles, unlicensed (and uneducated)drivers.

But we all should take responsibility for our actions. It's just sad that the value of a human life differs from one person to the next.

No Flaming from me, but I dont necessarily agree with your entire statement.

I agree, as adults we need to be responsible and accountable, and most of us actually do a pretty good job of it too, but visible and active policing is vital in ANY society, be it first world or third world.

Without fear of consequence people will naturally take more risks and chances, thats just the nature of the animal.

Agreed and we must take responsibility for our on lives to. its been said time and time again, but to preserve my life a little longer, whether i am on my bike or in my car, i am always expecting something to go wrong - whether it be a car going through a light or someone losing control. i am what you call a super defensive rider.

RIP to the unknown rider

I think we need to be carefull we dont see this as an act of intention, for all we know it was an accident. I have not seen any verifiable information to prove otherwise.

An accident is just that, an accident, it was not intentional like murder or rape where we can say there was no concern for human life, for all we know the driver is beside himself / herself with grief.

Accidents happen to the best of us, we should not be so quick to find fault with another persons failings.

No flaming here, rather a fire blanket for protection! I agree. There is a total lack of RESPECT for everything. Laws, people and their belongings and pretty much everything else! In other countries police are there to monitor people and engage people that fail to abide by the laws. Majority of people outside of SA abide by the laws and rules. In this country people expect the police to enforce the laws as opposed to abiding by them!

If we just did what we were supposed to there wouldn't be half as many accidents and indidents... Contrary to popular belief, the laws are there to protect us not hinder our daily lives.

Condolences to the friends and family of this Cyclist.

Yes, the Helivac Marshals, Sign-up provide Marshalling Services on these routes over weekends. But, we need support from the Cycling Community. The Motorcycle Marshals is everyday people with a passion for Cycling Safety. That is why our motto at Helivac Marshals is: Cycling Safety is our Concern.

The Motorcycle Marshals give up their free time over weekends to promote safety amongst Cyclists and Motorists on these routes. The connectivity with Helivac is that JP sponsor some funds to cover fuel, hi-viz jackets and a Paramedic.

We want to expand our services even more, start covering Sundays as well, but we cannot expect guys to do this totally voluntary due to costs etc.

We want to help, we want to be there to keep the groups safe, guys, we need your help.

I think this is incredible. I wish we could have the same my side of town. I suggest opening an account and those that make use or want to make use the support can set up a payment schedule into that account. With the amount of riders the amount doesn't need to be big and should be at there descretion, R10, R20, ++ per month to assist with things like petrol, food at coffee shops and other associated costs.

I dont even ride there and I'd be happy to support knowing that some awareness is out there. With this type of support you are educating the drivers on the routes that cyclists mean business and they are there to stay.

Those contributing, however small, can get a little sticker for their bike showing their support. Just my idea.

Again, this support is fantastic

True.

My statement was in general life and not specific to this incident. Condolences to the cyclist's family.

Firstly condolences to the family. I'm lately to scared to go on that route due to the amount of traffic.

Captain Slow, you said that we are all adults and should not need policing. But unfortunately I think the problems on the roads are the same as everywhere else. There is no consequences of action that anyone take.

The attitude of why should I keep to the rules, what would happen if I don't. If people know that they will get caught and fined, or loose their licences they might behave on the roads. We visited Germany last year. The drivers their refuse to even start the car if everyone don't have their belts on. They will also not load more than the legal number of people in their vehicles and rather do two trips to transport everyone.

So the fact is if there is consequences for breaking the rules of the road, or for that matter breaking any law, then there will be that feeling of "self policing" and everyone would hopefully behave better.
