If 29ers are so much better why did those brothers win the last stage. We know everybody wants to win the last stage so alot of the guys were going out to win it. The manufactures told all their guys to ride 29ers .... why? SALES. Doesnt Mr Mclean have shares in Cycle Lab????? Look I do think a 29er is probably a little quicker, but as Burry said if he wants to win races he'll take the 29er if you wants to have fun on a bike and have more response from it he takes the 26er. If you have a good bike I think its crazy to trade it in on a 29er but if you looking for a new ride then thats different. Personally I dont realy like the look of it, it looks way too big, but you do get use to it, on the epic the 26ers looked small around all those 29ers.

PS. My friend who did the epic has got the same bike as Burry and he came near the back of the field.

The world is forever evolving. If 99% of the pro's prefer it, there must be advantage in it.

I heve my 26 FS and I will ride it untill I need to get a new bike. Then I will deff go the 29 FS route.

But I will deff not just go out and buy one now 'cause jan-rap-en-sy-maat says so.

My next bike will be a 29er. Then I will see for myself if its better of not. I did testdrive one the other day and it was fine, it was a hardtail and i'm used to a dually. So it was still hard.

When I got back on my 26er it felt so weird, like a childrens bike, almost like my wheels was stuck to the ground.

Hey Witkop where can I get a blue chain to match my blue 29er wheels, bars and headset spacers, please let me know as I won't sleep until I know... AFAIK they are only available for SS. :D

CRC has a ninespeed coloured chain, but you probably already are running ten speed on your bike, so sorry about the ongoing sleepless nights. ;)

I have decided no longer to bother with these debates but here's a comment from my Epic partner who rode a Niner HT :-

'A 29" HT is not in any way comparable to a 26" FS so don't let them try to fool you'

Amen BigBen.

I rode the SS champs on a 29r HT and my butt sure as hell knows there is no comparison!

Nooooooo it is impossible ;) something must be wrong!

I understand that 29er helps with the technical stuff. I also battle with the technical sh!t. Spend more time on the ground than on the bike.

 thats the best description for me too ... mother earth just looooves me

Wow thanks for your valuable contribution to the subject

There I was hoping that there would be one week were someone wouldn't post a new topic on the 26vs29 debate. Where is TNT1 with his advice on how to use the search function...

Since you want my valuable contribution - horses for courses. Big open roads with rollers and climbs and some moderate technical stuff - 29er HT all the way. Tight technical stuff, or brutal multi-stage events - 26 FS.

And don't buy a 29er if you're the size of a garden gnome. It also requires a different style of riding completely, more suited to guys with power than those who like to spin.

Want to race - 29er, want to ride for fun - 26er.

Interesting, so the guys are paid to promote 29 by riding them for exposure rather than performance. That would mean they would risk having egg on their face if they were beaten by a team riding a 26", that cant be good then. I know if i was a sponsor i would want my team to ride the quickest bike 26 or 29.

Sales ?? Cyclelab has more 26" on their floor than 29, now why would it not be the other way round. Methinks if AM had mentioned last night on SC that 29 were cr@p and punted 26, he would have just as many people commenting that he only said that so he can flog his existing 26 stock.

In December last year I was priveledged enough to meet Manny Fumic (who is a cannondale factory rider)... he had both his 29er Flash, and his Scalpel here. i asked him how he finds the 29er, his response: "my 29er is nice for long jeep track climbs and non technical courses, but I love my scalpel - it's more fun to ride and more nimble on the techincal courses"

I can't argue with a pro, so I'll stick to my 26inch mtb, train hard and kick your ass on your fancy it'll make me faster 29er... 'nough said!

You would think McLean has shares in Gary Fisher or helped invent 29'ers.

No matter how nice your bike is, you still have to pedal it.

Wasn't there a similar debate when full suspension bikes starting making their way into the race scene.

One half of the mtb fraternity swore by them, while the other half said they weren't necessary.

If I remember correctly, MBR magazine did a test where riders were timed on laps with heart rate monitors. They were given Cannondale hardtails and Scalpels for comparison. The riders definitely found the Scalpels more comfortable, but they felt slower. In actual fact they were faster around the same course with a lower heart rate.

Hasn't there been a similar test with 26 vs 29'ers?
