how dou stick a 29" wheel on a 26" bike? maybe on the front, but at the rear end?????

If you fit very low profile tyres like road 25/28mm on them they do fit.

Posted

why cant you fit a 29 fork and a 29" wheel on the front end of your normal 26" frame, and keep the 26" rear wheel? i think trek made a bike like that a while back....a 69er.

I have decided no longer to bother with these debates but here's a comment from my Epic partner who rode a Niner HT :-

'A 29" HT is not in any way comparable to a 26" FS so don't let them try to fool you'

For sure!

But a 29er HT is softer than a 26 HT. Which makes it the better marathon bike if your not looking at full suspension.

What's better for marathon racing? a HT with top of the range wheels, or a full suspension with mediocre wheels?

Price wise they should be about the same.

I didn't think that anyone actually still watched Supercyling. As much as I love the sport, I find the programme utterly useless... Would rather spend the hour reading ProCycling on my iPad.

How cool would it be to have both parked in your garage?

And if you gonna climb lots, mount the 26er. And fo forth.

Hey that's what I was lucky enough to do. When it's going to be rough I take the Chumba 26er FS, not so rough and possibly faster and flowing, I take the Kahuna 29er HT. Each one has it's purpose, klaar...

I'm still waiting for 650b. It will hopefully be the best of both, and for a short-ass like myself it will look like I'm riding a 29er anyway!

It DOES seem like their might be a '3rd way' in the future - maybe 5 years away?

650b (27.5 inch DO have many advantages - better rolling than a 26er, not as heavy or 'unwildly' as a 29er, less weight, better strength (than a 29er).

As the fathers of MTB are saying, 26" was originally chosen more-or-less by accident, and the switich to 29" is LARGELY due to the fact that there are engineering similarities/efficiencies to 700C (road) wheels.

And finally, MUCH easier to fit a 27.5 into a 26" front and possibly rear, less negative effect on steeering geometry than putting a 29" front wheel in a 26" frame.

....finds, a rock, and hides away...... B-O-O-M !

Is this 27.5 story actually going to happen or is it a bit of a old wives tale?? Or maybe they waiting for the sales of 29ers to slow and soon as that happens BAM time to get 27.5 as they are so much better faster etc etc

KHS, Jamis, Ventana and Haro make 650b bikes, Kenda and Schwalbe make 650b tyres. Stan's, Sun Ringle and WTB have rims. The momentum is gathering...
