I am totally clueless when it comes to cameras and photography. The girlfriend gave a hint she would like a camera for xmas . Will just be used for family and holiday pics.

Can anyone give me an opinion on the canon eos 1200 dslr ef-s 18-55mm lens.

Thank you

I would go for a very good compact(Leica) or a Sony mirror less , you will get far more pics, than carrying a heavy kit around.

Actually battery life on the DSLRs is generally much better than on the compact and mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras.

But yes, size is an issue. You will carry a small light camera with you more often and get the pics whereas a big heavy beast stays at home more often.

Quite important to know your GF wants in a camera. Is she wanting a DSLR as basis on which to build up a system or just a versatile go anywhere shoot anything type of camera.

Also budget range? You need to budget more than about R4k to get anything better than a current smartphone camera

the last pic is cool. Always wanted a waterproof housing for my DSLR, maybe its time to invest in 1 for my old body... No chance i'm putting a 5D3 in the ocean.

So... I went away for a week.

nice pics, and congrats on the baby!

Just some friendly pointers. When boosting saturation, particularly in combination with dodge and burn ( I presume you used these settings? ), then try set the feathering on the brush to minimize the halo effect, as seen on the shades over the pool picture. The halo tends to draw your attention away from the main subject in the pic. Otherwise, nicely done.

Thanks Karl..

Really appreciate the advice... However  ... Saturation...Dodge...Burn....Feathering.... I'll have to go google the terms  .. Zero knowledge when it comes to photography jargon.

I just get an idea in my head of something I'd like to try (as in the baby bump/sunset one) or see something that I just try capture an image of as I'm seeing it (the beach/palm tree/sea one) point my iPhone 5, take the pic, use a filter, slap a thin black border on it... and that's it.

My friend, then you are going to have your mind completely blown away by the endless possibilities of Photoshop or the likes. And before you say you can't afford it, there is even a free portal for online PS editing online.

[start of edit] - http://www.photoshop.com/tools?wf=editor

The above site allows you to edit pics online, and also includes tutorials to get you started. All for mahala! - [end of edit]

I took the effort of learning to use PS after I bought myself a DSLR a couple of years back. The skills I learned are awesome, and enabled me to turn pics I previously would have chucked into something worth looking at.

If you have even a slight inkling of creativeness, and enjoy taking pictures, then you will really enjoy learning more about photo editing. You can start by buying a mag or two from the CNA about photography. Most of these mags come with complimentary DVD tutorials etc. that go a long way to pointing you in the right direction.

Before long, you will toss the iphone aand have a proper DSLR or the likes. Be forewarned.

A friend of mine was in New York and found me a lense.

Look at the price in the bottom left corner

A lense to sit in your office in New York and take shots of animals in Brazil?

Is that the lense only or do the stingy buggers at least throw in a body too?
