Hi,

What is yout typical cadence on a flat which you can maintain for at least 20 minutes and what gear ratio are you in?

What is your cadence on a hill (assume Suiklerbossie for comparison sake) and what gear ratio would you be using?

Is cadence still relevant?

Cadence is definately still relevant.

I try to keep my cadence between 90 - 100 rpm avg on a flat road as described above. On a hill like suikerbossie I try to keep it between 60 - 70 rpm. I'll then probably be in 39/21 or 39/23.

But everyone is different, some like to spin, others to grind. I used to be a grinder, but working hard on getting my cadence up. Much kinder on my knees.

If you can keep a cadence of 70 rpm in 39-21 up suikerbosie you should be shunting!:P

Depends how steep the hill ofcourse! I'd say on flats my sweetspot is around 90-95rpm, but on climbs ofcourse its much harder as the gear ratio gets the best of me. Up Kloofneck I try keep above 60 but on my 3rd and 4th times I often go as low as 55, which is before I have to get out the saddle or fall over :D I do find that even on something like suikerbossie which isnt quite steep enough to have to grind there is a climbing sweetspot much like Wannabe indicated, My heartrate goes through the roof If I climb at to high cadence.

on the indoor trainer about 100-110 in a 50/17 (think its a 17)

on a cycle on the road flat sections try keeping it above 100 and climbs i will do between 80-95 in lightish gears....depending how comfortable I feel

You just admitted publicly to using a compact crank on an indoor trainer, pansy!

I try to keep my cadence > 90 on at least half my rides.

Me too...

Cadence / Leg Speed is one of those subtle skills that can greatly enhance or deteriorate performance.
