Anything less than R50 for a photo is a BARGAIN.As a professional photographer I would probably charge more....

If it's too rich for your blood, don't buy any...

Note that you used the words "professional photographer". Action photo's photos could have been taken by a 10 year old... nothing special.

I would be more than happy to pay for a good quality photo (like the Epic photos) but R50 for these photos are ridiculous.

You thinking from a photographer's perspective. R48.00 for a digital pic is a ripoff! A fair price or market related price is determined by what people are prepared to pay for it.

Sure you don't have to buy it, but everyone would like some memories of the event and are prepared to pay for it at a reasonable price!

I am sure there are costs we don't realise which need to be factored into the equation - transport, accommodation, purchase and maintenance of cameras, sorting, indexing, emailing etc, and royalties to the event organisers in certain cases. The photographer also wants to make a fair living. I have more of a problem paying big bucks for crappy photos. I'm sure most guys would be willing to part with their hard earned pennies for that dramatic shot which makes them look like a super athlete.

A fair market price is dictated by the price agreed by the buyer and seller - economics 101. If a significant number of people don't agree to pay the 'professional photographer' R50 per one digital photo the photographers will soon realise that a lower cost would be more appropriate for their 'professional' services. And anyway, do we really need anymore pics of our dirty mugs? ? :D

The ripoff is that specially on road races they are the only ones taking fotos. 20 000 fotos at 46.50 and they make R 900 000. Normally price should come down when there is higher volumes. And that price for digital fotos. So no other cost than the equipment and admin involved. And how are they operating with the photographers anyway? Surely they not all permanent employees. Say they have 40 photographers at the Argus paying each R 5000 for the day, if it is that much...

Do you analyze each business' turnover and profit margins before you buy?

You guys would soil your pants if you see what supermarkets make on a 2l milk...

Dont generally buy the pics but would be nice to have 1 of crossing the sani2c floating bridge - at the end of the day I guess they can charge what they want as there is no other option - why not charge a set fee and give the customer all of their pics - at the end of the day the work has already been done and throwing in a few extra pics will surely sweeten the deal? (and not cost the photographer anything)

Waaroor kla julle ouens?

Die meeste van julle se bikes kos enige iets van 15 tot 20 duisend rand. Die ouens van ver soos ek (900km) spandeer omtrent 3 duisend rand die naweek van die argus met brandstof verblyf en kos.

Nou kla julle oor n R 47 se foto???

this again?

what do you think the purchase rate of race photos is.

photos taken and put up on web to view:photos purchased

I'd say 100:1

it's a process systems issue, then economics should follow it. R50 a digital pic is not a good pricepoint in my opinion. It has to be an awesome photo

Dit is juis hoekom hulle kla. As dit nie vir Action Photo was nie, kon hulle fietse van R30 000 bekostig het.

Kom ons sien dit in `n ander lig. Jy soek `n foto raaait.

Geld is relatief.... Wat is dit werd vir JOU? Die woord is geleentheidskoste.......... Economies of scale en Absolute of competative advantage. Ekonomie 101

Dit is `n klomp kermgatte op die blog................

I must agree with the complaints about Action Photo. Generally the photos are poor quality and poorly composed. The photographer didn't even manage to fit the backdrop in my Sani2c finish photo (about 10% of the right margin is of peoples feet, etc). Considering the spectacular scenery on the route it should not be too difficult to get good photos that capture the mood of the event. For Sani2c they managed to get 6 photos of me, one on the floating bridge (which is quite nice), one after crossing the bridge, one somewhere above Nick's Pass (in the dark), 2 on the beach, one somewhere else in the dark and a poor finish photo. I may consider the floating bridge pic but the rest are just junk. By comparison I got 200 images from the Epic. Many of these capture interesting aspects of the race. The Poineer Trek sold the press pack which included about 600 images from Oak Pics and Slingshot Media. Both of these were priced somewhere between R300 to R600. This is good value.

The argument that I should not purchase pics if I do not like them is a bad one because I would like some decent event pictures and do not have a choice. I have the same complaint about the Sani2c, Joberg2c and Route 69 this year.

If Action Photo could put together a decent pack of photos including some good quality images of myself for any of these events I would be quite happy to spend R300 to R500 on those. On this one Action Photo has scored 0/3 this year and much the same last year.

Bottom line, in my opinion the only reason Action Photo sell any images is because there are no other options on these events. If most of the competitors feel the same way I do then they are taking a lot of photos that are never purchased (and the business case for them to cover these stage races is pretty poor). Just a pity there is nobody else who can do a better job.

Agree 100%. You can purchase all for around R300 but then they only got 6 pics of me so still R50 per pic for 5 bad pics

You're kidding, right? You don't have to print, just take it and upload it. Its nothing special, its just a normal unedited photo. R50 is steep.

No I'm not, the bulk of my income is from photography and on occasion I've shot with Action Photo.

Other than print and delivery costs, a digital capture is an expense that needs to be met.

Photographer's time, camera equipment, office staff for sorting etc, software, the computers for upload, bandwidth and so on.

AND, more often than not, companies like Action Photo have to pay per participant to the organisers in order to shoot the bulk images.

No doubt, much of the time the AP stuff could be described as bland, however their market is as mentioned for bulk stuff that the average funrider want's their shot of having been there. Will everyone want it, no. Will it always be good enough, no.

However, that is the market they serve and better than most. To use the Cycle Challenge or Argus as an example, there are upto 15000 riders who use those stickers for an image. In order to capture as near as each person, your photography has to be extremely conservative and straight forward.

In terms of what Kelvin Trautman, Jon Ivins, Jacques Marais etc shoot, it's a different kettle of fish as they are shooting mainly for high end PR/Editorial/Commercial usage. So the focus is on fewer captures but a higher degree of quality and creativity.
