So after cleaning your chain with paraffin, do you just wife it clean with a rag or do you have to rinse it with water and then dry with a rag? Just wondering if after cleaning with a degreaser or paraffin and some of it stays in the chain will it then not displace the lube afterwards.

 

I wipe it with a rag and then use a compressor to blow any remainder away. 

Leave it for a few minutes so it can dry, then apply lube.

 

I'd guess that if you don't have a compressor you could just wipe it with a rag and then leave it to dry for a few minutes, making sure it's dry before applying lube.

Degreaser, then rinse, then dry in the sun properly. Paraffin won't evaporate, and the residue won't do anything good for whatever lube you put on there afterwards.

parafin is highly polar so it will remain on metallic surfaces. wiping down is often not enough. I use a mix of 80/20 Water to IPA and dry the chain. Spray on and then wipe down with paper towel as you would do for a suspension component.

Or just avoid paraffin completely and use sunlight soap in a chain bath or a ultrasonic bath with IPA

Clean entire bike off with Diluted Cleangreen.

let is dry fully in the sun.

lube.

 

i've been doing that for years. 

my Record chain did not even get to 0.5 wear after 12000km of riding.

to be fair i keep my bike spotless all the time.

a clean bike is an efficient bike and makes me feel good when i ride it.

Like the frame? Is the paint/clear-coat that much different to a car? Do you do the same with your car?

The same for all the folks using sunlight soap all over. Do you do that with your car?

I have been washing my bikes with a 50/50 mix of clean green for years and never had a painwork issue. 100% Cleangreen concentrate is used for the chain and cassette.

 

As with everything in the bike industry, if it has the work "bike" on it, it costs 3x more... All these fancy soaps etc. are a complete waste of money!

I find Clean green dulls the paint and no amount of polishing brings the shine back. Might work for matt colour bikes but I won't touch a matt bike again anyway.

 

For cleaning the frame, furniture polish.

Chain degreaser for the drivetrain.

first chain bath, then bruch 

and finally wipe down with water?IPA sprayed into a rag.

 

Frame gets wiped down after I'm done as the splatter will have settled on the furniture polish.

IMO NO!

Paraffin has reasonable cleaning, lubrication and excellent penetrant properties. As a result it will get into the smallest space and any surface coming in contact with it will exhibit a slightly oily residue , which in turn will attract dust if not cleaned off properly.

Not ideal for painted surfaces, non metallic material or repeated contact with human beings.

Would not recommend it to be used to clean the chain if you use a dry or wax chain type lube.

 

 

I agree. I also wouldn't use it for these very reasons.

 

As mentioned, it has excellent penetration capabilities. It is often used to release tightly threaded or slightly corroded items. It wouldn't be entirely surprising if you subsequently found some things coming loose which you would rather not have come loose.I would also be concerned about it getting behind seals into lubricants and so forth.
