Hi guys

first, great job Carte Blance, it all starts with general public awareness.

so, how do we proof ownership at one of these road blocks. Are we now to carry some sort of proof, showing serial number, plus shop name, our name and then ID and then hope the bike have a serial number stamped some where.

My bike has a serial number stamped on the drop out. My LBS included this on my payment receipt and my insurance has it on my insurance policy. So if I get stopped they can phone my LBS or my insurance company.

I just came back from a run...Damn I hate running!

GRB285, this is for you:

Dangle, Nathrix and co. could have so easily have said: "You know what, this is not our problem." But they did not. They got involved and started doing something that is affecting the sport that I love.

And here you enter: Mr Concerned donater of funds. The T&C's are not valid. Who is the PI? Where are the fanancial statements? Etc. And you are doing this in the face of people wheo are trying to stop this from hurting us all!!!

Now it is clear that Dangle and co. need donations. So, I gather they are trying to be diplomatic about your "concerns."

Here is what I will do for you: I will donate monthly for as long as I can and as long as is needed to this cause. You know why?

Because I really want to tell you to SOD OFF! Take your "donation" and stick it!

By the way, you can always donate your time...Oh wait...that won't work...You seem to be to busy with financial statements and T&C's...

Typical grb285!

He is the most well known, his wife was mugged while bike riding, he has opened up his site to allow donations.

Why not him.

100% .... In fact the only real irony here is that whilst some take the time to anonymously post personal digs at Andrew about something that has nothing to do with the topic of bike jacking, Andrew put up a significant sum of cash to get things rolling for the hiring of a PI.

Guys, an afternoon lunch at a coffee shop will set you back a 100 bucks. Skip your afternoon lunch tomorrow and donate that 100 bucks to this cause.

You have now helped making cycling safer in SA.

It's worth skipping lunch tomorrow and packing a few sammies instead. Don't you think?

My 100 bucks is in.

Does anyone have any figures of stolen/ hi-jacked bikes? I'm not talking Game specials here, but they also can't be excluded.

Doubt theres a centralised database, but this could well be a goal of what Bicycle Safety has started. I'd imagine the closest would be data from the insurance groups, especially in terms of valuations.

One good start would also be more support for a registry like http://www.nbrza.co.za/

So, serial number linked to microdot on components and accessories registered on a registry and insured, should go a long way in combating the issue of bike jacking and theft. Making the crime a lot less appealing for those unsavory pricks out there.

Now if this could be offered as a package thing in one go, wow.

The roadblock was there to create awareness. The bush telegraph works much better then twitter or facebook or the hub for that matter at this stage of the game. People talk and we wanted them to know we are on the lookout for stolen bikes and we will use any means necessary (lawful) to locate stolen bicycles and go after the criminals. No id's or serial numbers were checked, but if you come trapping along with an expensive bike with clip-in pedals and tekkies it should trigger some alarm bells, especially if it's a 29er dual suspension. No harm in questioning the rider in a chit-chat kind of way is it? There were a few riders with some relatively descent bikes that came through who worked for bike shops.

There are not one person in charge of the bicycle safety initiative, there are many people involved. We are not here to save the world as someone mentioned. We want to create awareness, we need all the help we can get, perhaps get the people who work on our borders to be on the lookout for suspicious looking bicycles crossing the border, follow up on court cases, assist the SAPS in investigating incidents and catch the criminals as soon as possible so that we all can ride our trails without any fear of being bumped of your bike out of nowhere, stabbed, stoned, hit with a pipe/stick, shot, raped and hijacked.

We can point fingers all day long, make sarcastic comments, ask a 1000 questions, demand answers, demand audits, make accusations, etc. If you want my 2 Zim $ opinion, it will get us nowhere. Unfortunately that's the reality we are faced with every time we go out and ride our bicycles if nothing is done about it. I'm not trying to be a hero. All I want is just for you and I to have a safe ride every time we go ride our bicycles and for our loved ones to have peace of mind when we are out there enjoying the trails.

Just to add to that Nathrix.

If you, yes YOU who is reading this can't contribute in a positive way, you are not willing to contribute, or make random threats about big donations, or you feel that you will solve the crime by "just saying" and "I told you so", then rather stay away from this and go and create your own threads where you and your little arrogant and pessimistic KNOW IT ALL buddies can go and stroke each others inflated egos.

If you can't get off your ass and contribute in a positive way, then please stop wasting our time .

I am hoping ,for your sake on your next ride out, that you don't have to face the barrel of a gun or even worse that you don't end up lying on the side of the road with stab wounds and your wife and kids have to sit and worry about your whereabouts because it will be at that point of your life that you would come to the realisation that your money or your blatant arrogance has never really impressed anyone.

Being anonymous is a great barrier and safe haven ,but only you are making yourself look like the idiot you really are.
