Back to work yesterday.

Left the car in the basement and had a NICE detour on the bike commuting back home.

Thinking of linking 2 maybe 3 detours to take the 4,8km commute closer to 10km, and adding in a LOT of hills ....  So many options

Only downside is that the detours include crossing intersections ....   STOP and get over when it is SAFE !!

So the real trick will be to find the optimal route with the least number of crossings ....

Anyone else in Gauteng commute this morning?

Damn that wind was hectic...

Sounds like my afternoon commute EVERY DAY for 6 months here in Cape Town :P

I was a little sneaky on the ride into work this morning - knowing that the South Easter is going to be pumping this afternoon (more than normal since it was already howling this morning), I thought I'd at least get something from today. There is a KOM that I lost on Christmas day (who goes riding on Christmas day, and not just riding, KOM stealing? I should have flagged it right there and then!) and I tried once under perfect (windless) conditions to get it back but came up 3 seconds short. Today's conditions were perfect for reasserting my dominance on the local neighbourhood KOMs. Nailed it with 2 seconds to spare. :D

For the Gauteng commuters, I have been told we aren't just getting rain, it's apparently hail too from around midday.

Think I'm going to try duck out the office before then.

Hope you're out already -the heavens just opened here in Sandton.

NICE commute back home !

included some new hills .... long steady climbs ....

heading straight into the South Easter for the last section provided even more practice opportunity

was miffed to see it only added just more than 1km to my ride .... still a very nice route.

Learnt: it's easier to ride into town on your mtb whilst slipping a roadie  :whistling:

Thanks to the roadie who pulled me along for a few km's this morning. Legs were a bit tired and the wind was getting more gusty and a real nuisance.

Looking forward to the ride (fly) back home after work

21km ride in 42min! LOL

Left the bike at home today. Had a serious headwind going back home yesterday. Took me almost an hour to get home were a normal day would be about 45min. Need some rain here in Polokwane!

I learnt that your body can get used to abuse/torture quicker than you think.  After a lay-off of almost two months I got the chance to commute yesterday and today. As expected going to work would be tough as I most surely lost some fitness.  Comming back home was very tough and it took me almost 20 minutes longer than my normal return trip.  This morning I commuted in but took serious flack.

So as I got on the bike for the return leg, it felt like going to the principals office at school.  Prepare for a good hiding today.  Turned out I felt the best of the four trips. Actually came home faster than yesterday.

Been enjoying my commute on Monday and Tuesday .... maybe just a little too much ... standing on the pedals and powering up hills .....

When I got up this morning my knees "complained" a bit ....

Thats the beauty of leaving the car at work and commuting to home and then back to work - HAD TO get back on the bike to commute to work.  Had a nice slow ride, lower gears .... proper recovery ride.

I enjoy the SE commutes from Town back to the southern subs, its where the most gains are to be had, especially since you're head on into that SE wind non stop.

This morning was just perfect. Wish I could have made more of it, but had to come straight in, no time for detours

What does one do in the following situation...

A car passes you with 10-20 cm to spare while having ample space to pass much wider... I know some drivers don't mean it (as they just don't know how wide their car is... twice I've been hit by a mirror on my elbow and the drivers were shocked themselves...) but I could sense this guy did it on purpose... I almost caught up to him at the next stop street but afterwards thought... what would I have done had I caught up... when I turned off at the next roundabout he was shouting all kinds abuse at me given I gave him the 'bird'.

My intention was to ask him why he was being such a d@@s passing so close to me but experience thought me this can escalate VERY quickly and we're vulnerable ten and there or next time he sees a cyclist thinking it's me...

I once slapped a car a while back... the owner stopped so I stopped too to have a chat and this 'huge' gym oke stepped out and he wasn't impressed I slapped his car so I politely asked why he cut me off making sure I didn't trigger any violence which could have gotten me seriously injured :)

I follow a simple principle and its a mind set thing. Basically I am a guest on the road and the hosts are the Cars, bus's, trucks, motorbikes, etc. If I'm a guest then I am subject to their rules, as nasty or as polite as they deem fit. Once you've accepted that and ride with that perspective, then you'll be a much more peaceful commuter, no matter what comes your way.

NOTE: You still need to be super vigilant and trust that spidey sense we all have.
