Once you've accepted that and ride with that perspective, then you'll be a much more peaceful commuter, no matter what comes your way.

And you will start enjoying commutes much more, rather than allowing other frustrated road users to intentionally try to disrupt your joyful experience.

Random side effect of commuting - less leg hair!

I commute 3 x per week about 25 mins each way - 2.5 hours total per week. I do it in jeans cos it isn't that far.

Checked my legs the other day and I have very little hair on my thighs and calves - anywhere the jeans rub really.

Odd.

interesting ... will check my legs ....

also have a short commute, also do it in work clothes ... with the bright yellow bib

What does one do in the following situation...

A car passes you with 10-20 cm to spare while having ample space to pass much wider... I know some drivers don't mean it (as they just don't know how wide their car is... twice I've been hit by a mirror on my elbow and the drivers were shocked themselves...) but I could sense this guy did it on purpose... I almost caught up to him at the next stop street but afterwards thought... what would I have done had I caught up... when I turned off at the next roundabout he was shouting all kinds abuse at me given I gave him the 'bird'.

My intention was to ask him why he was being such a d@@s passing so close to me but experience thought me this can escalate VERY quickly and we're vulnerable ten and there or next time he sees a cyclist thinking it's me...

I once slapped a car a while back... the owner stopped so I stopped too to have a chat and this 'huge' gym oke stepped out and he wasn't impressed I slapped his car so I politely asked why he cut me off making sure I didn't trigger any violence which could have gotten me seriously injured :)

Road.CC posts these 'Near Miss of the Day' videos.

This particular driver was very upset that the cyclist had touched his property after the cyclist had smacked his car when he passed so close.

Zap signs and swearing dont really help the situation, but you can understand the cyclists anger.

Luckily this one ended without further drama.

I had a run in with a motorist yesterday coming home. There is a robot crossing where I have to turn right. As soon as the lights turned green (together with the green right arrow) I set off, together with the 3 other cars. As soon as I turned there was a motorist coming from the opposite direction, also wanting to turn into the same road as me. He proceeded to turn in behind me, while the light for him was still red. I just lost it. I stopped my bike right in front of his car, turned it sideways and proceeded to skel the bliksem, pointing out that his light is still red. He and his wife just sat there like rabbits in the headlights. I'm not convinced they even knew they were doing something wrong. Should have asked to see his license.

What have I learnt? I don't know, try to be more calm about these things. Don't try it with a 4x4/taxi. Oh, and use more civil language.

Self control is key (as suggested) but man it's not easy...especially if your body / life is threatened!

I have calmed down though after 3 years + of daily commuting... but still looking for the inner peace so I can accept the SA driving style / aggression... for the sake of possible retaliation towards me and other cyclists...

I'll try to no longer take a taxis keys away and kick off a cars mirror (happened x 2) or just kick a car :)

Odd.

nah, fake news, checked my rear end in the bathroom mirror now and the hair is still there!

All my jeans are tight ... hard to find jeans that fit over the legs and without the bloody things then having such a large waistline that you could fit two people in it. :P

#cyclist problems!

I have a 32" waist and 93cm inseam and "cyclists" thighs. Finding standard jeans is just not possible.

Tip for the day. Buy bigger jeans and have the waist tailored to fit.
