I commute to the Centurion Gautrain each day. Been doing so for the past 6-7 months and loving it. There was the odd day or two where I did take the car when I was really not keen on cycling (those cold dark winter mornings). Luckily I don't have too much of an issue with hygiene as my commute is only 2.1km

Things I have learned:

Make sure you don't forget your lights on and come back to find the batteries are flat

Carry at least 2 spare tubes for the time you have two flats.

Don't forget you Gautrain card at home (double face palm).

Hehe, or your work access card...or to take your sweaty riding clothes out to dry.

Riding in the rain is not that bad but leave a towel near your front door at home/garage so that you don't have to walk around the house all wet.

Take it really slowly in the rain as the road are slippery. Rather safe than sorry.

I have moved to Claremont and work in Mowbray. First time in 11 years I am closer than 20kays from work. Commuting feels like cheating now! Have forced myself to take a proper detour in the morning to add some mileage!

Lesson learned last week. People will stop in the middle of the road, Hans Strydom to be exact, open their door and climb out.

DON'T PASS CARS ON THE LEFT! People don't look in general........close call.

Roads eat MTB tryes for breakfast.

Any suggestions? I don't have a spare set of wheels and I'm not willing to changes my tyres every Saturday when I go MTBing and back again for the weekly commutes. What's a good set of tyres that's hardy on the roads and provide decent riding off the roads? If there is such a thing...
