Things I've learnt from commuting

Button up a few buttons.

Turn shirt over. Fold one side in and sleeve down and repeat on other side.

Becomes a bit of a mission but what needs to be done needs to be done.

..........don't assume the pedestrian will see you even though you have the magicshine light on strobe mode & you are in the cycling lane. I connected with a pedestrian at top speed yesterday morning in full view if peak hour traffic what a noob, I'll be fitting me one of those handlebar horns or bell next. Bike has damage to the eft sti & skewer only, me a grase on my thigh & tailbone in lots of pain not sure of what though, did I land on it or did the seat hit me. I blacked out on impact probably shut my eyes only.

First Commute to work

Alarm goes off at 4am – I’m quite surprised that I heard it go off and didn’t just go back to sleep as normally happens

Got up at about 4h10 after realising I really want to do this and cant just lie there thinking about it

Look outside. Walk to the other window and look outside

Think it must be safer to go for a run

Start getting dressed to go for a run

Then I realise I’m going to be thinking about why I didn’t just get on my bike and go for it my bag is already packed from the night before… look out the window again… Stuff it. Get bike and go

Got to work in one piece and feel fantastic

Pedestrians are more dangerous than cars, I have lost some chunks of flesh thanks to them on a few occasions!

A bell is a must, but also not a guarantee that they will take notice.

You get to work much faster on the road bike than on the MTB, however it reduces the value of a training ride.

The road bike is less versatile than the MTB and you need to be much more careful where you ride.

not for me - I get a much better workout on road bike - no granny gears :) feel like I'm cheating on the mtb - but agree on other points. Much nicer not having to worry about little bumps in the road & feeling (relatively) puncture-proof

(oh-oh. Was that the sound of fate being tempted?)

FInding new routes is an awesome way to discover a new city!

Developing my Southern Burbs to Pinelands route, dropped my "Main road cycling" down to about 500m today!

And I got to ride through parks etc with the early morning sun...

Getting addicted to this!

And of course, all these are personal, and your experience may differ!

Preparation is key.

I can never just recovery ride...so:

My legs are always sore.

Wind can change direction in an instant, even reverse around corners, laughing in your face.

Sunrises are beautiful.

I've become addicted to it.

I can't eat an apple and swallow while riding!

Bike setup is key!

Most commuters are friendly.

I arrive home 200% mofe relaxed.

My rear tyre (mtb) gets killed on the tar.

Consult windguru, but don't worry about windguru!

There's always a race waiting to happen!

People do the oddest things in cars sitting in traffic.

Yours?

This is a cool post :)

I found that people smoking weed to and from work in traffic is quite common.

Going past building sites (sometimes I turn around as do that stretch of road a few times).

Jah man!. And in cars too, not just behind the garden wall :)
