Flowta, how often is she being fed?

She is fed 200g (1 cup) twice a day as per Vets instructions. (Same as previous food)

I must say it seems like she is not going looking for more food as much as she was on the other stuff.

Quick question to those with Labs and larger breed dogs

What do you guys feed your fur-kids to keep them healthy (weight down, etc.)

We've currently got Ming (Lab/Bull-Mastiff) on a diet. She's down 4kgs from 66 kgs four weeks ago.

The Vet reckons she should be about 45kg. She is overweight, but I believe this is a bit optimistic. Nonetheless we're going to try.Vet reckons it'll take 2 years to get her weight down.

On the contrary, her brother Congo (Staffie) gets fed exactly the same as her but is just skin, bone and muscle.

The Vet has given us special Hills diet food, but the problem is that it is R700 a 12kg bag. I have no problem if there is no other option.

We want the best for her and Congo.

I can't really comment about overweight because I don't have that problem.

How much exercise does she get?

All my dogs are spayed and neutered and I feed them regular Montego Classic 25kg bag mixed with a 20kg of the Montego Karoo bag. Cost is about R17 per Kilo.

Don't know how you guys can afford the R58 per kilo food  Is it really that good?

A raw diet costs about R30 a kilo

In honesty I found the best food was the raw diets like Barf (and to a degree Vondis). Where in the natural evolution of things did dogs ever eat grains? (Except maybe semi digested in the stomachs of their prey!)

I didn't find it significantly more expensive than premium pelleted foods and one feeds considerably less.

Cats on the other hand are tricky so mine are on the Origen and Acana grain free ranges and doing so well on them. One cat needed to be on Hills JD so switched on vets advice but then se started to bring up her food - so have switched them back gain to Origin.

I really really believe ( and have learnt from experience) that these are a better way to go.

You really really do like the grosser things, don't you! Hahahaha!

It's a hazard of the job I am afraid. More strange is that I am vegetarian, raw meat gives me the creeps!

I wish I had the time to be like my mom and make up incredible home meals for the dogs but I am afraid Hills blocks is all they get. They never get scraps off our plates either, so they don't beg and they have really good teeth and therefore breath.

Although I do catch the Jack Russel in the dishwasher fairly often and he has a skill in stealing chocolate off the coffee table.
