"Hashim has asked to be excused from the last two ODI's of the current series against Sri Lanka on compassionate grounds since his dad is currently critically ill," Mohammed Moosajee, the South Africa team manager, said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Hashim and his family during this difficult time and we understand that family obligations always come first.

I wonder if this is part of the reason for his poor form as of late.

so many unanswered questions for these last two games!

*was this the 15man squad?

*Is Amla a definite to go?

*was Reeza out, why bring him back. if he plays and gets runs, then cool beans?

*Markram was out the picture, if he scores runs is he in. if not then no?

*all the other tested bowlers gone now - beuran, paterson, and Mulder

*is Miller now the backup 'keeper?

*if so, will he keep in these games?

*has KG earned a break yet

*are they going to use the 3 T20i as world cup squad games, or bring in morris/sipamla/dala/cloete/klaasen/malan like against pakistan?

we've played 15 ODIs in england since the 2011 world cup.

# has got the most runs, by far

SA squad for last two ODIs (updated)

Faf du Plessis (capt), Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock (wk), JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Rassie van der Dussen

6 weeks later and I think we still don't have answers to many of the questions we faced back then.

the only real update I have is that it's only 15 players in the WC squad, and Olivier is most definitely out.

Our team needed this choking finish in normal proceedings before the world cup. We should have cantered in but found ways to lose wickets in those final 4 overs, should actually have just lost it there. Sure it isn't an ODI, but it is basically the same squad getting some game time in imho.

With this game behind us we can learn and go to the World Cup with some experience. The ODI series didn't give us the proper working over we needed, this T20 gave us that crunch finish.

My wife, who doesn't really watch cricket, has watched the last few series' because I have been watching and with the babies she spends a lot of time in the lounge and she asked me last night if the proteas always struggle to win games they have in the bag? and then said it seems they can't handle pressure. I just laughed and said that's why we never do well at world cup and the age old joke does the round that they drink choke(written in coke font). So after watching 2 or 3 series', she has already noticed we struggle at the death under pressure.

My nerves struggled last night. Imran  Tahir you biscuit!!!!!!

LOL yeah when the commentators said he has done the maths I laughed. When he got that single to draw the game, my celebration looked similar to his.

18 off 24 with 7 wickets in hand?!

well got to remember that Malinga is a master, and he bowled 12 of those 24, they went for 3 runs and 3 wickets fell.

6 runs off 14, and Phehlukwayo went for glory. if anyone needs to learn from this it is him.

Meanwhile Duanne Olivier has become a bit of a tjop. I can understand his decision, but shut your trap for a while rather. Can play for england in 3 years time, what a dumb rule.

the Protea's next international fixture is the opening game of the CWC against the hosts.

There's semis and finals of the Momentum 1DC, I don't think the proteas are allowed to play there, and maybe only Junior Dala could get in if injuries to Ngidi/Nortje persist.

JPD has done enough

Amla is always going to be in the mix

Miller appears to be the backup plan for keeper, if QdK gets injured they will need to call someone up - am guessing that is still going to be Klaasen (although Verreyne has scored loads of runs).

The not so obvious one that got away, Heino Kuhn - on a kolpak contract now, but importantly topped the runs in the 2018 county limited overs tournament.

Best guess for squad

1) Quinton de Kock (wk)
2) Hashim Amla
3) Faf du Plessis ©
4) Rassie van der Dussen
5) David Miller (stand in keeper)
6) JP Duminy
7) Andile Phehulkwayo
8) Dale Steyn
9) Kagiso Rabada
10) Lungi Ngidi*
11) Imran Tahir

12) Reeza Hendricks
13) Aiden Markram
14) Dwayne Pretorius
15) Tabraiz Shamsi

If you go by the recent squads for the various ODI series played of late I am inclined to agree with you regarding the composition. How far we go with that squad in the tournament will be interesting to follow.

My personal prediction is either out after the first round or our usual loss in the semi finals.

Pat Symcox made some interesting comments regarding team selection. His post on Facebook relates. I agree with most of his selections except maybe that of Hash. The basis of uncle Pat’s decision to select him was that of experience. Although i agree with that sentiment one has to ask oneself: has he shown any form and how much game time has he been given leading up to the WC. Also for me Slinky Morris is a bit too inconsistent specially with his lines when bowling. He also has a surprise selection of Elgar, which also raises a few eyebrows.

I agree with most of your starting 11. The worry for me is the length of the tail. While Rabada and Steyn can clearly bat, them coming in at 8 doesn't provide you with a consistent 20 off 10 balls type of player.

Correct. Andile has shown potential but is he reliable at 7? Maybe just one spot too high in the batting line up? But i do like the potential he has shown.

Thank heavens we have got rid of Parnell and Lobsy. God they were useless, and they had so much going for them. Parnell especially coming through the ranks at U/19 cricket. But he seriously lost the plot along the way.

All in all thats the best bunch we have available. We will have to see how they progress. My view is we will probably make the quarter finals and then lose. Hopefully im wrong...

nail on the head.

I don't think we have a great balance in the team. none of the batters can bowl and the bowlers can't really bat. it makes JPD and QDK crucial to the team.

BUT if the specialists do their job, we don't need the allrounders.

They have changed the format, so no more top 8. Everyone plays everyone once and then straight into semis.

There goes my credibility [emoji85]. Just proves how little interest i have in white ball cricket.

I doubt we will make the semis.
