I have been riding Thaba trails for many months now and I can truly say thay i have increased my power, climbing and technical abilities, strength and fitness tenfold! If you are a rider with any ambition to improve most of your mountain biking skills, there is no better place in the greater Gauteng region to do so. It is safe to ride alone, [something I have done on many occasions], the terrain and scenery is beautiful and the trails are well kept. I was very nervous of the technical sections at first, but once you have overcome your fears you will enjoy the riding immensely.

I have been riding at thaba for some time now.. I love it.. Its so tough at times and really gets your fitness and strength up..

Those rocks with the green dots to show u the line are so hectic, I didnt have much faith in them at first but it is definitely the best line..

Congrats to who ever built that track... It is AWESOME

After saturday's ride at Thaba, I started to question my ability on the bike as one green section between the trees on top of the hill was too technical and rocky, I had to walk. You could see where other riders' crank arms/pedals hit the rocks. I was too scared to damage my month old carbon crank, or we took a wrong turn and ended up on a blue section.

Having the zebra and its little one run alongside us for a while on the grassy section, made it all worthwhile.

Eventually u have to stop holding back from fear of ruining the bike.. :whistling:

I agree though.. The wildlife is great and the bakery is cool.. :) More wildlife at groenkloof i think though..

Open EVERY weekend. If the shop isn't open when you go, the security guard (who helped build the trails) will accept your 30 bux and supply you with a number board. The route maps are up on the wall outside the shop.

Thaba will always remain quite technical if that is what you are asking.. If its your first time there, allow for 1h30 for the 17km green loop. It has about 250 m of ascent and the majority of the climbs are single track.

I can only find a Thaba cycling club site, looking for details on the trails.

I've never been to Thaba as in the beginning I was warned it was a total sufferfest, but I think I'm ready to throw myself around some rocks now - I'm never gonna get any better on the technical stuff unless I do it, and Thaba ain't too far, and somewhere I can go on my own to practice.

Is there a short route where I can just practice some rocky climbs/descents without getting in the way of ppl. Ideally a short loop to start with. Can you advise?

There are yellow, green, and blue.

The yellow is very easy, but a nice ride

The green is about 20km with a mix of technical and climbing, the short blue off shoots are great tests of skill.

Then there is the green + blue trail which is a tough ride!

Uni for a start I would go ride the green route, it is about 17k's and has a bit of everything but no seriously crazy technical stuff. Hard climbs with a few tricky short ups in the fire station and then perhaps the twisty down after Dolly Parton should be approached with caution but there is only 1 rocky section to watch out for. After that you are well rewarded for your efforts with what is in my opinion the best part of Thaba, the last forest single track section.

Go do it you won't be sorry, there are also 2 shorter options that have less climbing and tech. Check with Sam/Wendell they are very helpful.
