Ok maybe justification of price.... I'm very cheap XX1 chainring is R700+- Dartmoor is R300+-

The XX1 chain ring also makes use of the thin, fat teeth... Brian Fantana has posted a few pics...

One thing regarding half link chains I do not understand is which direction to mount them.

Flat side is outside but which way should the links face?

Yea flat side on top ... but I also started wondering about which way after I already joined the chain unfortunately.

I dont think there is a wrong or correct way but from an aesthetic point I think it would look best with the fat part of the link facing towards the front/crank.

Other way round than I did mine in the photo :( Was thinking of swopping around but the supplier I got the chain form does not sell loose pin's for these ... anyone know where I can get pins?

Just use a quality chain tool and reuse the same pin. If you join it properly there should be no issue. It's nice that on a SS we don't shift so there's less chance of the outer plates being pulled apart and the chain breaking.

The pin on those chain damage the links when pushed out the direction it was inserted.

You should push it back the way it came in but the the pin extension might not screw back in.

Any way you go rather push it back and not through.

Thanks, The quality chain (familiar blue) tool was much stronger than the pin.

I pushed it back out the way it came in but it disintegrated when I tried pushing it back in! Blegh! Fark!

8speed pin not wide enough, SS quick link doesnt work, supplier still has none :(

Busy making my own!

Hi Tankman

There is a right and wrong way. I had mine on the same way as you and broke a link three times between 400-600km now put it the other way around (Fat side in front on the top line) and have done over 2000km not one issue.

You dont need a new pin. I take my chain off all the time. Sometimes to clean it but mostly to add or remove a link when I change the rear cog.

Just simply push out one of the existing pins until it is only sitting in the last plate. DONT push it all the way out post-16067-0-03984600-1372936674_thumb.jpg

turn around and simply rejoin

I bought a track chain to use on my S/S. I thought it should more or less guarantee no broken chains (and yes the gold will look really bling on the titanium frame). Alas I already hit a bump - none of my chainbreakers fits. I will have to wait until my LBS opens. Is it because of weight and cost that most guys prefer something else, or do I have more surprises waiting? (XX1 in front).

My brother has broken one 8 spd chain it was about 3 years old. I've never. I like the sram ones just cos of the quicklink as opposed to the shimano type quicklink. Otherwise no problems.
