Sepia Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 So, on my commute back from work today I saw a whole bunch of cops fining motorists using the cycle lane which goes past the Moses Mabida stadium. I stopped and asked the guys what they were doing and they said they were fining the vehicles that were using the cycle lane. What the cops had done is cone off the beginning of the cycle lane and all those vehicles which turned into the lane after the cones had ended were stopped and fined. I chatted to the cops for a while until I started to cop some abuse from the motorists. “You bloody cyclists”, “why are YOU not using the cycle lane” and “but officer, there are not bikes using the lane”

Cyclocross Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Went past this yesterday afternoon. Pleased to see a new appetite for enforcement by Metro Police of this cycling only lane (during clearly defined morning and afternoon hours for those not familiar with it). Ironically the two vehicles I saw being fined where middle class type rather than taxis. Seems the sense of entitlement exhibited at government level has filtered down to the middle class where certain elements seem to think rules are discretionary rather than obligatory. Just see the types of cars jumping red lights to see what I mean. Comments made by those being fined as described by the OP further show these drivers have no remorse or even acknowledgement of the need to share the road. A microcosm of our increasingly aggresive and intolerant society unfortunately?
Seeker911 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 maybe these motorists bought their drivers licenses in lucky packets and have yet to recognize cycle only lanes. red possibly in their eyes means stop, pause, curse at the other drivers who are stopped and then proceed with due haste
Velouria Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 The only cops I saw this morning were setting up a speed trap on a downhill, ignoring the complete gridlock at the robots a few kilometers back. I'll certainly swap my cops for your cops...

Eddy Gordo Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Sorry for the Hijack, but everyday I see cyclist ignore the cycle lane and ride in the road, this is not cool, as on that same stretch I make a point of using the cycle lane, damn, even motorcyclist use this lane as the cyclist prefer to be on the middle line in kromboom road. Then every afternoon a group of roadies make a point of not using the brand new cycle lane past the river club, what up with that. I dont blame these motorist for using the cycle lane especially if the cyclist are not making use of it. Not too long back this came up and someone mentioned that the cycle lanes were put in place to take the stress off the motorist and cyclist on busy narrow roads, so why dont we use it?? Is it lazyness or dont give a ...... attitude???

This mornings ride, I'm actually stopped at a red light, that middle to no class motorist, pulls off even before its green for us. Another intersection, I wanna turn, waiting in the middle, green to orange to red and those no class motorists are still chopping through the now red light. I'm then left with an irate motorist trying to cross over in red when the other side are going on green. I am not going to ride in front of a car at a red light. So where are the traffic authorities? I just don't see them and this morning I was on my bike (with lights) from 4 am and got back home after 6 am. I drove to work later but still no traffic cops, maybe thats why everyone seems to drive as they please these days.
Eddy Gordo Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Just after the river club, it actually runs in front of the stadium, next to the river, and this piece of road the traffic merges from 2 to 1 lane and then the guys come flying pass down the center line. Not the brightest of cyclist these guys.
