What really irks me is the fact that Andrew Mclean and Jerome Swart were allowed to do a 2nd lap to help the lazy unfit ministers, yet my cousin and I were told by the race organizers in no uncertain terms that we were not allowed to ride the route twice, the penalty being a 2 year ban, to raise money for a 4 year old family member that has Burkitts Lymphoma???

Obviously the organizers have double standards with regards to enforcing rules... Especially when one cause brings more publicity to their event.

Get a life. The comment was tongue-in-cheek. Andrew and Jerone were dropped off on the course and waited for them. Duh.

As for riding twice, read the rules. This is explicitly disallowed unless permission is asked for and granted. It's their race...

At least Auntie Helen understands what cycle lanes are for (which unfortunately is more than I can say for a few cyclists out there!!), and our Minister of Sport is showing us that it's not about the race but the event. Full marks to both of them.

Yea how wanna take a bet on how long it will take before we hear some comment from the minister that cycling is a whiteman's sport and they need more black representation in the future?

Was wondering what they will do if you forget to take your chip off for round 2

and you brought this up with them when? they do have a process for this, so you might have cottoned on a bit late.

doing the argus for charity is not the most original of ideas, seems like every second person is doing it for some or other cause. find something else, and go for it.

In my opinion been a politician is not an excuse to be fat or unfit, actually many directors of companies who control far bigger portfolio's and far greater spend and work under far greater stress and time schedules still find the time to put in a few hours a week at the gym, on the road and manage to quite comfortably cycle the Argus on their own.

I tend to agree with the OP, I watch the newspapers and the general news pretty closely and I also never saw any notice they would jump on a tandem halfway round, so if it was public knowledge, I am afraid it was not that common knowledge, and yeah, it was a nice gesture to ride, but I am also of the opinion they should have made an effort to do so unassisted.

The Argus is really a walk in the park for any regular cyclist. About the first 6 times I did it, it was with no concerted training and participation in any other events during the year, and had no problem completing any of them. Killah times no, but I did sub 4 back then. Not boasting but I am sure its the same for many of the 35000.

And about ailments, once I did it with intense stomach pains from perhaps too much wasabi the night before which meant no sleep as well. As a cyclist one of the first things you have to learn is to endure pain and discomfort. Why just this week Cav was puking all the way to a winning sprint.

So I remain sceptical about their participation, and it being a PR stunt. And lets look who directly benefits as well - follow the money as they say ...

Jeez, you lot are a bunch of nit picking whingers eh???

I have personally seen Helen out on at least 4 training rides over the weeks ahead of the Argus midweek on an early morning ride, obviously training. No cameras, no fanfare, just her, her trainer and the sound of wheels turning. As much as she's not the most capable cyclists out there, she put in a good effort, was constantly smiling and greeted every single person who greeted her.

+1 . WTF cares if Andrew or who ever did 10 laps to cart all the politicians around ? It is all for publicity and political gain so what is the big deal . If they won the Tandam race then YES lets start a riot or burn down a school . Google "fun" and the just add the rider bit .

We finally have some politicians, if not putting cycling on the map, at least getting involved, building interest and promoting the sport and commuting. Helen has been doing this for years, starting with her first commute to town from Newlands when she was early into her tenure as Mayor. In CT we have Helen Zille, Rob Carlisle and Brett Herron making some very positive noises towards cycling, promoting bike lanes, non motorised transport etc... This is the most positive period for NMT we have probably ever had. Yes some may call it grandstanding, but why the hell not grandstand and capitalise on events like the Argus. The more political support we have for cycling the better, the more politicians that pitch up for the argus the bettter - Helen should get the whole provincial cabinet out there, maybe even challenge the official opposition in the western cape to a race
