I know that some like baggies, some do the cycling pant and others bib's and that it's a matter of personal preference. Please can you tell me what the bib offers over normal cycling pant, or about it's shortcomings - and lets leave fashion out of this one.

Bibs stay in place better, they do not rotate or move down, so they are more comfortable. Just do not go to the loo with bibs on, then it becomes a bit of a schlep.

Prefer shorts, find bibs hotter and sometimes can be a bit tight after a few hrs riding in the seat interface area....Also a bit more complicated when it comes to visiting the loo i.e. just before race and you need to pooh can be tricky....

Prefer bibs by a HUGE margin because:

They are not tight around my (slightly) padded waist.

They stay put without creeping around or sliding down (especially on wet or very sweaty rides)

I wear them on the road and on the mtb (for all-mountain and trail-riding I even wear them under my baggies)

and generally, you normally find a way around the loo issue, especially when you're running out of options...

full length zipped top works well enough

I used both baggies and lycra shorts, then changed to bibs. They are so much more comfortable, and as everybody already pointed out, doesn't slip down when you got to get in and out of the saddle. This is very usufull while doing singletrack as you end up with sand and bits of sticks up your crack if you don't constantly pull them up. Baggies work well till it starts raining - then tend to get stuck below your knees and drag down. I prefer them for easy riding. Bibs rule - once you try them you will be converted!

I bought some cheap bibs (reduced price) last year and would not go back to normal cycling shorts.

When I next buy cycling shorts I will get some bibs again.

I used to give a toss about how I look to others but now I just care about how comfortable I am on a ride!

Ok great, so now which is the best brand available in SA. I know there is the whole deal of different pant suit different people, but in general.

I'm looking for long mileage stuff.

I hear Endura, Giordana and Assos mentioned, are they all available here?

Decca bibs have a magnet at the back so you can unhook it for a portaloo.I saw a girl with a set today and it looked pretty interesting.

No one has mentioned the "ugly butt view from behind." seeing a guy's butt crack while riding behind him, is enough to speed past untill you legs fall off.
