Any coffee related christmas goodies?

I received stainless steel Brew Tool tamper from my girlfriend

Does a "to-me from-me" count?

If yes, then I got me a Delonghi Bean2Cup machine.

In the three weeks I've had the machine, I've had less coffee (per day) than I did using my other machines.

Yummy yummy what a nice cup of coffee. Definitely in for a second one.

I got a few of those as Christmas presents,,, unfortunately a month past roast date - might take them to work and see how they perform.

So - whats the verdict on taste? better or worse than the other machines?

Same beans, different taste.

I like it, but the wife thinks the beans are very bitter (probably beans that were roasted 9 months ago, if you take the expiry date less 12 months as a guideline).

Need to tweak the grinder a bit until I get a satisfactory taste - perhaps even change beans.

I must say, though, that she likes the convenience of pushing a button and getting a cup, whereas I still like "making" coffee.

Jeez, where did you get the old stash? Was it a yuppiechef order maybe? Might still be worth a try.

They are my local roaster. I like the peaberry, and they had a limited edition Brazilian that was super.

That reminds me, I need to pop in there again tomorrow...

Start with making the grind as fine as possible, and maximising the temperature - then if you can, maximise the dosage (strength) and taste from there.

I find that when you make a large cup through a super auto, it runs the water through the beans well past blonde stage, and maximises the bitters you get in the cup - so from a taste point of view, making espresso and adding hot water works better - even on a super auto...

Gift from someone who was in CT around that that roast time... got a Costa rica, an Ethipoian yirgachefe, a Kenya peaberry, a Mexican Altura. and a Guatamala Finca Ceylan to test - and not a huge amount of anything either, so worth a giggle... :)

Thanks, I think I've got the grind worked out.

I started with the finest setting and worked back until the coffee started flowing into the cup, versus dripping. I haven't used my existing grinder (yet) to try the "pre-ground" option, so I'll try again this week.

The temperature cannot be changed on this machine, unless I'm missing something somewhere.

I've set the length of draw based on time for the long cup (about 28 seconds) rather than when beans pass the blonde stage (mainly because I don't know when that is on this machine). For the short and medium sized cups, I let it at the factory default.

I served up 5 different strengths for the wife, and she likes it mild (2/5) versus my strong (4/5). Since then, I think she has gotten used to the taste and as a result is back to 1 tsp of sugar with her cup.

What else? I must admit I like the convenience of a quick cuppa coffee, but still prefer to "make" a cup.

I have the Russel Hobbs espresso machine which works perfect...but bought me a Nespresso machine as well to just change it off.

Russel Hobbs I got for cost with a bean grinder at R600 and the Nespresso was on special for R1699 but normally is R2199 :) (including a 50% discount voucher for coffee)
