ok, ok... I know this may revive the heated battle dealt with in other threads...

but has anyone ever noticed that MBUK never (as far as I've seen) has a lycra clad weight weenie on the cover?

Again... I don't mean to stir up old poop... but it's just something I've noticed, and it's maybe an indication of where the UK's MTB focus is?! Just a thought

I'm sure they've had plenty of pics of the Athertons in skinsuits at Worlds…

That said, the local mags (particularly Tread) have been upping their game in terms of broadening the Saffer MTB culture.

(Ride is pretty awesome too... but only becasue they had a pic of me in last month's edition, haha)

Yes they are more into the freeride / all mountain scene...although their reviews are balanced imo. This month was a shootout between marathon bikes as an example. Also their muc-off how to section is fantastic...great detail etc etc.

mtbuk is certainly more enduro downhill freeride focused, its a welcome change from our local market.

I think in time this market will grow more in sa.

Actually quite a few of the first issues had lycra, even with Jason McCroy from Specialized, RIP.

Been buying it since the first issues in 94/96 there about. Over the last couple of years though I reckon it's been dropping in consistency with content, although more focussed.

I actually rate whatmountainbike better than MBUK(but the toy always gets me in the end..hehehhe), but maybe its just me. I like the comprehensive reviews and the fact that they don't hold back any punches on crap. Tread now and again does a shootout of products like the lube one, would love to see more of that.

At the end of the day I am more of a trail / all-mountain kind of rider. The look of the magazine, the content and excellent layout appeals to me.

Lycra or no lycra on the cover. Ill still buy it.

What Mountain Bike is excellent as well.Their reviews are tops.I bought my sons Scale 40 after reading their review and then bought my Santa Cruze SL after their review as well.Hmmm maybe its time to read another one

Or, if you have one, get the iPad edition for about ZAR50, or 13 issues for around ZAR330 - great way to buy an excellent mag...

13 issues for 330 SA Rondt ... the local mags will never match that!!!!!!!!!!!!

I miss Paper Weight when they had all the above old mags at silly prices like 10 SA Rondt per mag ... a few months old usually, but still a very good read with usually excellent stories and photographs.

I used to go to the old Estoril bookshop in Hillbrow and get them.

Lets do the math based on the pricing from zinio

LOCAL

Bicycling SA: 10 issues @ R252.32 = R25.23 per Mag

Ride: 12 issues @ R142.38 = R11.87 per Mag

INTERNATIONAL

What Mountain Bike: 13 issues @ R310.21 = R23.86 per Mag

Bike: 9 issues @ R93.01 = R10.33 per Mag

Mountain Biking UK: 13 issues @ R310.21 = R23.86 per Mag

MBR: 12 issues @ R382.33 = R31.86 per Mag

None of these mags can hold a candle to Dirt. Best mtb mag ever. Actually best mag ever. Why no one actually distributes it in sa is beyond me...

Agree, I received it for a year by free sub for some reason, missing it now.
