Not kidding, 100% true story!

I was so stunned it took me a while to realize the guy wasn't joking.

He actually asked me for my "cycling cv" at that point I said cheers and left.

Before anybody asks I am not a totally useless cyclist- top 100 Epic a few years back.

Sad thing is that the bike is brilliant and I would buy it again in a flash. Just not from that shop. Ever.

So a mate of mine just called me;

He stoopidly took his bike to Spez concept store Melrose arch for a major service on a soft tail he bought there about a year ago....

Without quoting, they go and "service"the bike and call him with the invoice amount;

R5500!!!!

Includes;

- R2,000 for servicing front and rear suspension

- R3,500 for replacing big chainring and rear cassette - Oh and it aint no top spec bike either. SRAM X7 / Shimano XT components.

Does anyone other then me think that is a little bit more than excessive???!!!

Your mate should just drop the CPA on him and go collect his bike. Anything he didnt authorise should not be his responsibility to pay for!

Else, if I have it right he can tell them to remove the "new" componentry and replace with the old...

I would not cough up

I would throw my toys. This is not good for the Specialized brand at all....

Yeah - Its just insane. I told him to go and throw his toys.

Seriously, not acceptable.

I also told him to next time rather go and pay the boys from Dunkeld cycles a visit.

Regardless - if you want it and you have the $$ then you have the right to any bike you want. Whether you are "contender" enough or not.

Funny thing is (I know the guys there) the guy who it likely was that asked for the "cycling CV" ain't no hotshot rider either, but he boasted about being on a new stump jumper. Big on talk, small on service. Very happy to rip their clients off.

Tell your mate to:

1 - Go into store and pick up heavy spanner in right hand.

2 - Apply spanner to left ear of spaz shop boy.

It's a pity this brand is being destroyed by it's own people. Not to worry, there are plenty of LBS's and brands that give good service.

I think that the only thing that the Specialised Concept Store in Melrose Arch specialises in is bad service!

I went in there last week with a colleague of mine looking for a soft tail bike. The sales guys there (Ricky) said that they didnt have stock of a particular bike and that he would check at other stores for us and call me to let me know. One week passes - no call. My colleague went and bought a Scott from one of the more competent LBS' out there.

I went into the concept store today and the same sales guy was there';

1. When I asked why he didnt call me about the bike, he said "I was supposed to call you?" Äbout what" - this after I took the time to fill out my name etc on a piece of paper for him to get back to me.

2. The guy was completely unapologetic

3. His breath smelt like something died in his mouth, seriously, move inside a 1m radius of this guy at your own perril.

4. The store is extremely poorl;y stocked. And this is not the first time I have been in there and they havent had some of the basics.

Bottom line, I will not shop there again and if I were you, I wouldnt either.

If I ever need anything with a specialised brand name again, it wont be from the Melrose Arch store.

Wow, you don't get a return a phone call and you bite like rattlesnake.

But then again, anyone who wants to buy a Spech deserves bad service ph34r.png

Really like some of the Specialised bikes. They have a lot of character. Also like a lot of the accesories but it has become close to impossible to find the stuff. My LBS refused to sell me a Specialised because of the trouble they were having with the local supplier.

Might sound odd but if I was in the market for a Specialised I would buy a Cannondale.
