I've managed setting up and maintaining tubeless for a while with a hand pump, the type that has a base that you stand on.

Trick is getting a semi seal around the rim, some soapy water, vigorous pumping and ... pop

I have a cheapie 220v car tyre inflator - I use a shrader to presta converter and you good to go.

I have setup a good few tubeless tyres with it and absolutely no hassle.

Its even seated big Nevegal 26x2.35" tyres no problem , done that 3 times - seats the tyre first time everytime.

Always use Stans though - its the only sealant that REALLY works.

You do not need a full sized compressor with a tank - that is total and absolute overkill , never mind a waste of money and space... Tyre inflator for the win , maybe just get the one with the highest flow rate to be on the safe side . Makro/Midas will sort you out with that

i did this the other night... was not fun...

the key is the semi seal tho....i think i may have hurt myself trying to seat the tyre to no avail with the stand-on pump...eventually out of desperation (saturday eve 9:30pm - setting up for sunday's ride after a disastrous impact puncture at kingskloof saturday) i took a bomb and inflated the tyre...worked like a charm - i then deflated the tyre added sealant, and re-inflated with handpump...

us cheapskates must suffer...but will end up with huge triceps

Lezyne big volume floorpump ( wooden handle)

I've never needed to use my compressor again, no start-up, noise, attachment etc issues, just Soo much better than any pomp I've used before.

Those pumps are virtually the same price as a compressor, well that is according to Olmypic Cycles prices!

drive to the closest gas station and pop your tyre there.

I worry about the amount of moisture you get at most garages compressors. It wouldn't be too much of a problem except that it will dilute your sealant. The one across the road from me is especially bad.

I bought a 24L tank compressor from Adendorff Tools. Was around R500 and another R200 for a decent size hose and air valve attachments. Beware that most of the included (if at all) air accesories does not fit properly on compressor and/or valve side. As someone has said before getting the air pressure into the tyre is important. I was also pleased that the salesman pointed this out to me beforehand. Great service.

just struggling to justify spending that sort of money on a floor pump when I can get a compressor for R50 more. Is there much difference between a Lezyne Alloy Floor Drive as supposed to a Park Tool Home Mechanic floor pump?

As the others have said that little 25l one is all you need.

- Close the shut-off valve at the compressor

- Set the regulator at the compressor to 4 bar

- Run a short hose from the compressor over the valve ( I use 8mm pneumatic pipe with a quick connector on one end)

- Open the shut-off valve

The tyre will rapidly inflate to 4 bar. If it's not inflating check that the tyre bead is not sitting to one side of the valve.
