Cyclist knocked down in St James this morning

The best form of respect we can show the fallen rider is to actively do something that brings about change and if this thread is the vehicle to that, then so be it! The overwhelming majority of us who cycle through this stretch would look to see some real change in the behaviour of the drivers there, from this incident moving forward. Are we reaching to high to want bus drivers to simply slow down and not drive over us?? Really???

Your point is valid and support any debate to keep us safer on the roads, and if this is the vehicle, then sobeit.

WHAT WE

vote for people who DELIVER WHAT WE WANT.

ZIlle promotes herself during ACT time and then she's all over us but once thats past its back to business as usual. High tea with her business cronnies and the next scam that allows business to continue unchecked.

Hold PPA accountable: where are the laws protecting cyclists and pedestrians? Probably never happen because its not in the interest of the big money spinners. Yes folks we are fodder because the city's plan is to promote buses and trains. And if killing us gets onto a bus its mission accomplished. Uncivilised huh, but thats the strategy.

Wheres the effective policing? The whole traffic department is on hospital bend most evening pulling over taxi's but why are they not actively patroling the streets? Wheres the leadership in taking control of the roads. I pay my taxes to get abused by people wo dn;t pay theirs because they make "donations"....

Besides the fact that most of you can't read (I said I am not going to get into an argument ) it is also obvious to me that you cannot hold a proper debate about anything . I am not going to spoil this tread that should be about a cyclist that lost his life .

We are looking for a solution, not an argument. We are becoming argumentative as there is nothing but policy information that is forthcoming. Someone lost their life yesterday as a direct result of negligence from an employee at the company you work for. What has happened there yesterday and today that will make all the other drivers of GA stop driving the way they do and behave more responsibly towards other road users?? Had this been something that happened in any other industry there would be health and safety consultants ALL over the issue, yet this just remains quiet and business continues as usual. The status quo must change. This cannot go on! Is there anything constructive you can offer us, or is it really just business as usual back at the offices of GA today???

Ah well trained by your corporate PR machine.

Blame the victims, deny, close the shutters, business as usual.

Still no statement from GA.

I will be going for a ride from Muizenberg to Simons town on Sat 7.00am .We need to take our rightful place on the road and show that we are not going to be scared off the road.Just like we are not going to be scared off the cycle lanes.

Is the sign outside the money tree restaurant that tells northbound cyclists to use Boyes Drive not still there?

I'm not sure exactly where the accident happened, but can gauge that is was somewhere in St.James which has had construction completed but is a narrow section. I don't want to detract from the discussion here, and it appears to me the driver was at fault, but I think a bit of background to the road currently might help a lot of commenters who are not familiar with it.

*It is a hugely stressed commuter route, with cars backed up at a one way stop and go round the harbour for about 20-25mins at peak time.

*It has had roadworks disrupting it for about 4 years now.

*It is popular with both commuter and recreational riders. The road has been narrowed in places recently and there is more chance to ride on the pavement in the southbound direction.

*During long periods of construction, northbound cycling was not allowed. This has been/was ignored by many, many cyclists.

*Cyclists and drivers in cape town don't respect each other.

As someone who lives down the road and uses the route, I always felt that it was an accident was waiting to happen. Very very sad that it has actually happened.

Hey Steve, yes we both know the road, I live parallel to it in Gatesville Road. Where this incident happened the road is open - which is borne out by the fact that a bus was travelling down it. I don't feel any of the history of the road is really relevant to this thread. The simple fact is the driver felt he had the right of way, broke the law and a life was lost. An example must be made. The silly season is just getting started and it won't be long before I am cycling past another blanket lying in the road, or worse.

And public accountability?

they're banking on August Season starting soon so it will all bow over. Storm in a tea cup. Cyclist can't organise 100 people at a protest ride unless it benefited them so why spend money on a statement. By Saturday morning they'll have forgotten

It's really very simple.

Only pass when it is safe to do so. Today I had some woman behind me hooting while I cycled in the middle of my lane in order to protect myself and my fellow cyclists in front of me (the left hand side of the road is full of potholes etc).

When we got to the stop street we pulled over and she screamed past and then stopped a couple metres ahead as traffic was bad. People just need to chill out. I also used to drive like a maniac but realised its silly. You accelerate hard and then brake hard a couple of metres ahead.

Bus drivers need to chill. They tend to accelerate as if they are in a drag race only to brake shortly after that. I guess most of the GA drivers don't care as it's not their petrol of their brakes.

And most work vehicles are driven the same, if it's not yours then why respect it.

We need to change this mentality. The main men at GA should track acceleration etc. This will make the roads much safer.
