The cost of bikes - have we lost touch with reality?

Recommended Posts

in the start chute on Saturday was a oldish guy on his Dogma with electronic gears. the price of my car. his rear wheel was twice the price of my bike. I beat him by 3 minutes. w00t.gif

Reminds me of when I beat a guy on my 15k bike against his S-Works McLaren Venge with electronic Dura-Ace and tubies. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

My MTB bike cost me about 35k with wheel upgrades, pedals shoes and so on. My road bike about double that. Road bike costs next to nothing to run. The MTB is a bottomless pit into which I chuck money.

Is that unreasonable? Hell I have no idea. I don't smoke, don't drink, don't eat any meat. Drive my cars average 10 years before replacing. No children. I have run my own business for donkeys years and work bloody hard.

I pay cash for my bikes and a road bike lasts me about 6 years. Buy a new one and start saving for the next one. Some young guy wants to look at me and think old plonker on overpriced bike that is his issue, not mine. I don't look at someone and judge them if they don't have a pricey bike.

If someone wants to take issue and race me and beat me to make themselves feel better for having a cheaper bike than me I have no problem with that. I have been beaten many times on a bike. I get beaten every time I ride in fact. They will have to do better than 2:45 in the 94.7 to do it though. Not a great time but respectable for an old bloke I like to think

I'd rather be the one smiling while riding an S-works, even if it's at the back of the pack.... as opposed to smiling at some else who has an S-works...

Just think about it...

I smile riding my pimped alu Raleigh RC2000. clap.gif Generally not very observant about the bikes around me...

Remember, it is not about the bike ;) And I do not ride sub-vets or vets (just open/seeded), so it is not about the needle either!

Interesting topic this

Riding buddies and I discussed this the other day as well. When is enough, enough? I was planning on building a PYGA up with XT, Fox, ZTR etc, and it all amounted to about 40K (from CRC). That was until I sat back and thought about the amount. 40K!! That is a lot of money in anyone’s books (even for those in a midlife crisis).

I think the most I can ever see myself pay for a bike is 30K. I love cycling. I eat, sleep, breath, talk, think…. cycling and am totally addicted to it, but you still have to sit back and see what the opportunity cost of such a purchase is. Not only with bikes, but the gear as well.

What is your max amount (not based on current income, just realistically)?

Why do we limit ourselves when it comes to our toys..if the wife needs a washing machine, holiday, car etc we get them the best we can afford..so y don't u buy the pyga with xt ztr etc ..u work hard u deserve it. Life is short my man we have this belief that Tomorrow things will be easier or get better when in hindsight we are in the prime of our lives ...right now. So short of robbing a bank or putting yourself in debt buy the pyga or cannondale ..who knows how long we have on earth..how often have u heard people saying i should have done..gone..if you young u imagine things be easier as u earn more.. But with that come more debt responsibilities commitments..I recall as a student working as a waiter earning 200 a weekend being 'richer' than I am now. So go out and buy ur dream bike..I did..live for the moment ..life's short

This 2010 Pinn'R is what I got about 6 weeks ago for R7500.00, it really did stretch the budget a lot which involved leading some ront's form the girlfriend. That is the best and most expensive toy I own.

Smile's all round when I hit the trail's at Giba and don't even think about or care what the other people are riding all I can think of is going faster and harder down the trailsthumbup1.gif

Wasn't a case of smiling at him, just smiling because I beat him on my alu Bianchi.

Twist my words, tisk tisk.wink.png

Instant gratification costs money. The latest of most consumer products come at a huge premium. If you are prepared to wait only a little while, most of yesterday's brand new toys will be on offer at much more realistic prices. 2013 Bikes are launched just after midyear 2012, and 2012 bikes are already going on special. Check out the Obike site, CRC's end of season sales notices, or manufacturers newsletters. The specials are well worth a little patience.

If you have the cash to burn, remember the higher the price, the bigger the fire. Shop owners just love you for generating the heat. Try selling what you have just bought for the same purchase price and see if you can recoup your "investment". It is an unpleasant reality check.

Personally I prefer the 'wait a-while' frugal approach and hence are not impressed by magazines hinting that a R85k bike will 'not be breaking the bank'. That is not the reality of the average reader out here.

Did my first Hyper to Hyper (The Fast One) on my R500.00 Hansom Le Turbo. Started with a chap on his Colnago Ferrari. Dropped him up the first climb (the one to Silverball) and only saw him again at the finish. I had enough time to go and put my bike in the car and change, go back to the finish just in time to see him finish.

haha, I did my first 3 94.7's on my 1980's somewhere around there Raleigh Racer that was passsed down to me, it still has downtube shifters, weighs like a ton, but needless to say, did a good race, and had a brilliant time!

A bit off topic, but never mind the cost of a new bike...

When last did you have to replace a bunch of things on your bike?

My MTB went in for a service today, the LBS just phoned.

Almost R 5000 for a service.eek.gif

NOW, I am not complaining, because this includes a free hub body, shock service, BB, headset, new tyres and a new cassette.

BUT, the cost of a replacing these is 25 % off the value of my bike.

If I have to do this four times in the time that I own my bike, I would have paid 40k for a 20k bike.eek.gif

(and would have had many priceless hours of fun on it thumbup1.gif thumbup1.gif )

I just sent my MTB in for a full service... Im nervous! Dont want one of these phone call.. eek.gif

I was actually going for "degree by google" as a solution, sourcing parts from the cheapest place(local or web) and learn how to do it yourself. I am saying replace parts, service your bike and make sure it is mech sound, you will defnitely enjoy your riding more. Also its quite lekker doing the work yourself and you know what was done and not done. I am with you ito of cost of things being flippen high, but there are ways to bypass big price tags.

Been wanting to do a build for a while now.. and i must say it sometimes lands up costing a little bit, but i suppose it takes times to find those bargains and patience... still keen on it tho, also been doing alot of reading and knowing what is wrong with your bike when something goes wrong helps alot, and if you know how to fix it yourself, bonus!

What is it with this fixation about the cost of the bike versus your ability as a rider ?

Do you have to watch a certain amount of hours a week before you are allowed to buy yourself a Huge LED Flatscreen, or have to make a thousand phone calls before you are allowed an iPhone without being judged ?

What difference does it make if you finish last on a 100k bike ?

FFS get over yourselves. If you can afford a 100k bike then good for you. Go out and ride it and have fun. If you can afford a 5k bike then do the same.

I had to chip into this thread as well.....

It’s not only bikes.... but the whole world has gone mad.

There’s the old saying: “99.9% of our population buy things they don’t need, with money they don’t have, to impress people they don’t know!”.

It’s actually so sad! So to answer the OP....Yes we've lost touch of reality!
