Geez you are a stirrer. He-he. One can take the "dont take yourself too serious"-thing too far also. In the end only the top 10 roadies will have proper gear and the rest will be in slops on Makro bikes. Give us slowpokes a chance to play dress-up too! Will be looking out for the smoking podium guys...

I try and agree with you....who am I to say slicks on mtb look hond thumbup1.gif we are all lance armstrong bradley wiggens in our hearts....gooi the slicks guys.

Good now that we have covered you pet hate, here is mine...okes that take themselves too serious. I am glad that sprint to the line where you pipped tant mossie from driefontein gave you a semi, give yourself a high five and fistpump 5 times....the slicks and your eye of the tiger instinct really made the difference.

PS I heard autozone is having a end of year sale on their performance wings. You might wanna check it out

Geez, now who's the one that hit a nerve????

nah I love roadie tannies...I would do two 94.7 laps if I was sitting behind the right boude. And for the record I reckon roadies can suffer much more and for longer than us goats....those big rings are not for sissies.

Nothing better than chasing Lycra boude!

Go with the knoblies dude just check the maximum pressure on your tires and do them 1/2 bar harder than that. This should help with enemy no 1: Dr Rolling Resisto.

If you plan on 6 hours put your mom's saddle on your bike. This will help with enemy no 2: Mrs. Saddle Sorro.

If you really wanna be cool take the gears off your bike and ride in your undies with a mo-hawk. This should kill enemy no 3: No Respecto.

I'm planning on doing it with slicks. I have a 10 year old Giant Hardtail with tubed wheels (including tyre liners), so no concern with looking cool or being pretentious.

I'm doing the 55k MTB this Sunday, followed by the 94.7 road race next Sunday, followed by the Rand Athletic Club Tough one the week after, which is a 32km run from Old Parks in Randburg out to Witkoppen and back. If putting on slicks will help save some energy to use on the day and the week afterwards, then I'm not going to be concerned with my XL Giant Frame looking "hond" with slicks on.

My only concern would be how dramatic the change in wheel size is by changing to slicks. A minor concern though ... hell, it might even be a benefit on the climbs.

p.s. I priced slicks at my LBS, R90 a piece, so it'll cost me a cool R180 ... a damn side cheaper than a road bike, thanks.

Be at the start about minimum 30 minutes before your actual starting time. You will have to go through the pens with your start group and progress to the actual start time. Be early because traffic will also play a major role. I would suggest that you park your car at 7:30 no later. This will give you enough time to slowly go towards the start point. If you are running late you will be stressed and will not have a relaxed start and most propably will not enjoy the race.

Jacques - I will say this again and again. Do NOT underestimate how long it will take you to get to the start. There are HOBS of people. And there is nothing worse than using up all your glycogen reserves cause your heart is hammering cause you are LATE. Aim to be parked by 7.30am. That way you have time to get out, check your bike, put on sunscreen in a relaxed fashion, double check your Gu's etc and just feel ready. It took me about 3 tries to get this side of things right.

The start is near Makro Woodmead and you will either have a red of a black number. Cannot remember which is which but you will start on the left or right hand side of Woodmead Drive depending on what colour your number is. Just get in your group and then move in your batche along the road towards the start. Eventually you are at that start line and it's your turn!

When the gun goes off, there are usually 3 groups - those that TEAR away and will often exhaust themselves within 50km, those that ride at a brisk pace and those that dawdle. Decide which group you want to be in. If you ride at a brisk pace (that is not faster than where you can still talk to someone - if you are gasping you are riding too hard and payback time will hit you before the finish), you will finish in a good time. The dawdlers are having fun. They will be in the saddle a long time and probably won't be having fun 6 hours later.

This is a great race. But remember a few things. It gets *(&^*^ hot out there. Your ass will be in pain. Your neck and shoulders will be aching. Ride in a bunch if you can but if you are in a bunch, behave yourself. Nothing worse than a reckless cretin when you are riding at 40km/hr. If you cannot stay with your bunch, drop off the back and find a bunch that suits your pace better. Try to avoid riding solo, particularly trying to catch a bunch UNLESS they are JUST ahead of you. You will kill yourself and will pay later.
