Team FedGroup-Itec throws Evans a lifeline

I haven't read any of the thread but my first thought when I read the headline is "Why does KE need a lifeline?". What an extremely sensationalist and misleading headline!! As if FedGroup-Itec are doing him a massive favour.

Bar Burry, he's the best MTB rider in the country and I have no doubt that he would have secured a decent sponsorship without being thrown a "lifeline".

In addition to what you have said already, Kevin's racing years are drawing to an end, and surely he already had plans in place to still have an income should he quit. So I also think that this is not a lifeline at all, but another oppurtunity to race competitively.

Well yes and no, as healthy as a state marathon MTB is in, sponsorships aren't exactly being handed out willy nilly. Certainly not at the same level of commitment that Nedbank 360Life were providing, in terms of of finances and resources.

Add to that the stigma, justified or not any potential sponsor has to consider that against the association with their brand.

So with such an abrupt end to any athlete's contract in an important stage of the season, there's a knock on effect with income, even with a contract payout and any form of planning. The man's primary job right now, is racing and winning.

Sensationlist, slightly, misleading, no.

No abrupt contract termination. 360 will pay KE till the end of his contract period.

LifeLine maybe!!!!

Kevin's choice.

Not sure that Max Knox will agree

Hope Reid gets a ride somewhere. Maybe at USN with Phil Buys since they both have an XC focus. Or maybe with BMC as RE:CM let Luke Roberts go as he also wants to focus on the XC side of it.

Seems that accomodating the XCM and XC riders in one team is a bit of a challenge.

KE didn't seem overly excited on SS last night.

Sponsor welcome party the night before, saw a couple of Tweets about a late night with a lot of Moët

If BS is going to be riding with KE, he'll have to train much more and party much less. Always thought that BS had much more potential. Hopefully this will now come to the fore.

BS is a family man. A lot of talk but not much partying.

He has potential for sure, running a team with so many sponsors takes time away from training and race focus. At the same as having 1 sponsor to look after of riding for a team.

Possibly. But the association with DG must be a huge stumbling block for KE to secure sponsorship alone. Even with the support from Scott, that would not have been enough to support him the way FedGroup-ITEC can. It was BS that approached FedGroup and ITEC and various 2nd tier sponsors like Kathea and Crusader Logistics and sold them on upping the budget to include KE. I believe it was initially emotional - BS and KE known each other along time. BS knows the hardship of a team breakup specially when you have a family to provide for. BS and KE have daughters the same age. Bit of a tug on the heart strings I'm sure.

Either way mutually beneficial. Will be nice to see good come from a bad situation.

I think that is the problem right there, he is one of the best in the country so sponsorships aren't easy to come by just because a rider like Kev is so expensive.

I do agree that is a tad sensationalist though, but isn't that what the media do?

There's a difference between the media and PR.

With mountain biking so big here in SA I'm actually surprised that we don't have more top teams/riders. Think about it, we have 10 really top riders and between 3 of them they will win all the big races. (Knox, Evans, Doper, Mcdonald, Stewart, Woolcock, Bell, Combrink, van Rensburg, Rossouw).

Then you have guys like Buys, Ben-Melt, Goustra, Luus, Reid and Beukes that are so close.

We need more sponsors!

Hi-jack!!

Rossouw was very prominent in the beginning of 2012 - out of nowhere - and then suddenly did not feature in the last 6 months. What's up?
