I see the last recorded time for the 75km was 8 hours plus, respect to those guys and girls, and well done to the other 407 finishers was a very tough day at the office today, my palms are still feeling a little tender, and the legs are definitely feeling it now.

What a race, what a ride. Painful at times, amazing at others. Best race I have ever done, hands down. The cramps were nipping at my heels from 48km onwards, luckily I kept them at bay....I feel terrible for those who cramped, been there, done that and I know nothing helps.

And a lekker social gathering after! I'll be back next year on my SS for more punishment.

Well done to all who started this race - it ended prematurely for some, but that's MTBing in Africa - where the men are men and the rocks are Monsters.

Just wish they would hand out a Powerade or can of coke at the finish - whats with these strange tasting "recovery' concoctions (including those sachets in the goodie bags)

Mind you that recovery Wimpy Choc milkshake was real good, but I had to wait an hour for that b4 I got to the Harties Wimpy.

Halfway up the monster the rider in front of got a stone between his rear derailer and wheel ,ripping it clean off .Unfortunatly my spare drop down wasn't,t with me

Ouch, I think I passed that guy. Felt bad for him. I wonder if he made his bike SS and finished?

Great race, but man that was a tough day out! Thanks to the rider who gave me a tube when I punctured on that last cement climb about 13km from the end. And to the two 40 km riders who also helped. I promise to pay it forward.

Ya saw him at the top looking for a hanger. He eventually decided to remove links firm his chain and was gonna attempt some sort of on the fly ss rig

There was some confusion about the cut-off on the 70. Whats-his-name (the PA) said something like we had two hours to get to the top of the Monsta - so we in the back of the field stressed out lank going up there, I was getting ready for a confrontation since there since we had been riding in almost one long continuous line, and I was going just fine, and lots in the tank for the balance of the route but as it turned out that was not the case, and then later guys were saying the cut off at the finish was 2pm ('in the email') and we still had 10 k's to go, but that was also not the case so perhaps this is just something they need to be clearer about at the briefing and comms.

My first attempt 9 years ago, I was subject to a cut-off and that was really unfair since I had been riding my pace and also felt strong.

Beside that, great ride/route, not too sure about how much extra value that 5 k loop adds, and I got about 78 k's all in. Love that journey up into those eroded sandstone rocks, and the ridge in the later part and all the downhills were amazing.

Still getting chainsuck when I change into lower front rings on a climb on my new 3x10 FSA crankset and that stopped me on a few climbs which really peeves me off when I loose my tempo and rhythm, and then you have to try get going up hill. But it seems its the FSA chainrings that cause this (Ref: mtbr forum) so now looking at a Race Face set which have worked well for me on 3x9

Switching modes on Fox CTD still an issue for me, with all those undulations its really tricky to take one hand off the bar to flick the lever BUT had a moment en-route and thought of adapting a 3 click SRAM FD Trigger shifter to do the job, with a suitably engineered spring loaded cam/wheel on the shock. Since I use twisters I think this could be an option ...

My first monster done and dusted. 2 punctures before the 45km split were fun. Managed to graciously land near-bail at the top between the 2 peaks, catching my bike mid air as I endo'd over one of those drop offs. The head over heels stint down the monster wasn't as gracious, though my ego was less bruised than my legs: no witnesses :P

Came in at just over 6 hours after hitting a wall in the last 3kms. Massage followed by beers went down like a home sick mole. Can't wait for the next one

That was a properly nackering 75km. Those last few climbs really hurt. Some pretty hardcore terrain as well. The monster itself wasn't too bad, but you feel the effects of it later on.Overall an awesome race, excellent value. The free massage at the end was areal treat.A privilege to be able to take part.

There were times towards the end when I wanted to throw it all, sell the bike and take up knitting instead!

Crappers, that was tough. Never mind cramp in the legs, I was fighting it off in my hands and fingers on the descents!

The ride up the monster was awesome. Just powered through it. Pity I didn't stop to get soak in more of the view.

Those winning times are the stuff of legends. Serious respect. I would like to see how that lot navigate some of the trickier rocky sections. Especially the last bits towards the end. Had a sense of humor failure there...

Well done to all that finished.

Till next year...
