Anyone know why Meat smelled like off Mielie Pap

Recommended Posts

Bought stewing beef from PnP the other day and experienced something odd.

Soon after the steak was searing a stink that reminded me of mielie pap overpowered me.

Is this if the cattle are reared on mielie pap? Do some shops inject mielie pap into solid cuts of meat?

It's not the first time I've smelled a slight whiff of mielie pap from meat, but this time was the worst by far and I ended up giving it away as it was too strong for me to handle.

Wait and see how sick the person you gave it to is tomorrow.

So no (serious) ideas on the mielie pap smell?

It's very different from rotten meat, so I'm not worried about poisoning anyone.

Its possible the feed used can effect the taste.

definately.

Havana in durbs has a grass vs grain steak.

Two steaks from the same farm, same breed.

One cow grass fed. The other grain.

HUGE difference in smell and taste .

@TutleMan

Not sure if serious :stupid:

No almond smell. Interesting question!

Gf rated it smelled like mielie pap as well, so hopefully not two strokes on same day.

But I remember once having a heat stroke and my friends giving me Coke to rejuvenate me and it tasted like Fanta Grape, but I don't think this mielie pap smell was all "in my head".

Btw, you guys on The Hub rock! I googled my question (without the mielie pap) for almost an hour and only got stories about how grass-fed meat was healthier than grain-fed.

The odd smell / taste is probably a filler used by the meat producer to increase the weight of the product.

But how do they get that right with solid chunks of meat?

Sausages I can understand, but not sure about meat.
