The dark art of buying a light!

In winter I ride twice a week, once a week at Modderfontein and I now need a light, specifically a light suited to trail and single track like the Modder trail.

What do you have, are you happy?

Thanks

Magicshine 816E on the bars. Wide throw plus spot, good all round visibilty.

MJ383B on the head light and compact, doesnt strain the neck, needed for directional changes to direct light when your bars are facing the other way. 400lumen is enough for added light.

One to do it all? MJ808E on the head.Battery in the back pocket with extension cable and helmet mount.

The magicshine type lights are the best value for money and the easiest to get hold of. There's so many of them around that you almost do not have any other choice.

I like Exposure lights. They are light and more the enough light for me with very good battery life. No hassles with batteries and wires and can be used as a torch as well.

The downside, they are quite expensive and you will have to buy it from Evans cycles or Chain reaction cycles.

It also mounts very nicely between the helmet and the handlebars, which I like.

I imported 2,000 Lumen lights from China.

I had to import 10 (minimum).

So I have a few left if anyone is interested. R2,000 which includes postage. I live in Bfn. Unfortunately you will not get a guarantee although I will test it and send you a working light to start off with. I am riding with mine and of the few I sold already, people are very happy with them.

The light has 3 settings and I get about 4 hours on the lowest setting. PM me if interested.

Slightly off topic.... but the "magic-shine" lights with the o-ring type mounting only work on flat bars....

I'm using riser bars and my light shines off into the bushes! I'm still looking for alternative mounting options (any hints?).

Works fine on my riser bars, just put them directly next to the stem.

I bought 2x 1200 Lumen lights off of Amazon, same light as the ExtremeLight 1200 that you can find on the hub.

I got them really cheap, about R700 at my door which included a wide angle lens. They have 3 settings, High, Low and Strobe.

I have been using it on our weekly night rides as well as early morning rides for the past 2 months and I am extremely happy.

I still have a 1st Generation Magiclight 808, and ride it on the dim/low setting for all my road rides. Not entirely sure how much lumens that pushes out a dim, but its enough. No need to have a lighthouse on your handlebars.

good / cheap / reliable / bright = magic shine MJ872 , i use mine almost every day on my commute plus many night rides at modders ect.

Best lights IMO are Exposure and Lupine . but not cheap .
