Proper Mtb races

In MY own opinion, hakahana was probably the most challenging one day event last year in the gauteng area, but i do think Vori-berg is definitely just as challenging and the event runs through the year. I also believe that Clarens, for me still is the hardest one day race, the Ultra I mean.

i saw a comment here on thehub along the lines of "redstone is one of the toughest 50km events in the area"... i would assume excluding the monster, of course. keen to try it out, have ridden sections of it. probably next on my list.

That might have been me saying that. But they have apparently taken out the best part because of all the moaning by the masses :(

Hakahana is the only Nissan race I haven't done. And after speaking to some friends who did it I am glad I didnt. Apparently they took you up some ridiculous steep climb(that i dont mind) only to bring you down a concrete strip???? I dont mind bleedin g from the eyeballs on a climb if I am gonna get rewarded with so nice single track back down.(be it techincal or fast and flowing) DONT make me climb just for the sake of racking up some numbers.

I decided at the beginning of this year to forego the mass-market races in lieu of "proper" mtb events like the Magalies Monster. Last year I did all the Trailseeker races and was mostly disappointed with the lack of interesting, challenging terrain - although the race at VG was awesome.

Now that I have experienced the Monster I want more!

What other 1-day races in and around Gauteng would you consider "proper mountain biking"?

Unfortunately I can't make the Thaba Toughee this weekend....

I was wondering exactly the same after this last weekend.

What about Groot Marico (3rd August), about 2 1/2 hours from Jhb? Not as hard as the Monster, but still plenty tough over challenging terrain. Has a nice chilled alternative vibe.

Actually my favourite race. Not only is the route fun, it's small and intimate

oh I wish mankele was a bit closer.

Booked Misty Valley in September to try some of their longer routes, hopefully spend a day @ Mankele if time allows.

It's a bit of a word of mouth thing. The organisers are too chilled to even list the event on the hub.

I didn't enjoy Hakahana last year. The concrete (up and down) really killed it for me.

+1

I'm giving Hakahana a skip this year... I'll rather go ride my bike at Van Gaalens that weekend.

A quick question, lurking and reading this has confused me. Which of these events are tough due to technical terrain, and which are tough due to crazy hills?

The latter appeals not at all. I'd imagine that any races with a lot of the former would have to severely limit their numbers surely?

I have done voriberg.redstone ,babbas ,monster .If you want to do a MTB race with challenges ,but no walking ,2 laps at voriberg will do that for you .Redstone is as tecknical as monster but shorter and you do 2 laps .I do babbas on my SS and try to improve my times always .I am also avoiding the large MTN Trailseeker bottleneck events ,but Rooiberg looks like the ultra can be worthwhile
